To celebrate the book’s January 21 release date, Debra is giving away an eBook copy to one lucky commentator. Be sure to enter the RAFFLECOPTER below the interview to win.

DK: Hi Sasha! Thanks so much for having me here today!

CABR: Hey Debra 😀 Great to have a Twitter friend stop by. 😀

How’d you come up with the idea for “Wildly“?

DK: Being a girl (haha!) I wanted to write a story about how we’ve all had crushes on an older boy or older man growing up. It’s almost a female ritual to at least have one case of the crush on a friend’s older brother, a teacher, a coach, the hot sexy bag boy at the local grocery store.

What can seem so innocent and harmless can quickly turn into an obsession where we quickly make fools of ourselves. We can’t talk, can’t breathe, and there might be some drooling going on…that’s how we girls work at the tender age of 12-13 years old when our hormones take over our bodies. I wanted to capture those fluttering sensations, those oh-my-God-I’m-going-to-die-if-he-looks-at-me moments and take it farther for my characters.

CABR: Did you have to spend time former Wimbledon champs to research the hero’s life in the tennis limelight? 😉

DK: I didn’t! I’m actually a tennis player. I started taking summer lessons when I was six years old and the same man who taught me how to play also was the high school tennis coach who continued coaching me until I was 18 years old.

Now, there was no crushing going on with him…he was happily married with kids around my age, but a player/coach relationship is pretty close. There’s mutual respect and a friendship that develops during all the practices and matches.

Also, when I hit junior high through high school I took lessons at a private club from tennis professionals, played tournaments, went on to district and state. So, it was natural that I would have a Wimbledon champ as my hero, because at one time Tennis was a very important part of my life.

CABR: That’s so cool Debra 🙂 Tell me, what’s your favourite moment in the book?

DK: The moment that Grayson first sets eyes on Shauna after she returned to Cottage Grove and was all grown up. Sigh…Poor Grayson. Good thing he’s in top shape, or he might’ve had a heart attack!

CABR: Are you a  panster or planner when writing?

DK: Both! All my stories come out as a panster, but while I’m writing I keep a document open to make sure I have a goal, motivation, and conflict in every scene. After I’m done with the story, it makes it much easier to see if I have any plot holes or I rushed the story.

CABR: Paperback or eBook?

DK: EBook! I love my Kindle and I read from it almost exclusively. Paperbacks are for my keeper shelf, though I rarely read a book twice, just for the simple fact I LOVE the feelings that are invoked in the first reading and don’t want to overthink the story. I do have to say that I’m extremely excited that Wildly will also come out in paperback too. I’m going to clear off a shelf for my book.

CABR: What’s next for you?

DK: I have so much going on. In March I have a category romance coming out called “Suite Cowboy” with Turquoise Morning Press. It’s probably the funniest book I’ve written, and I can’t wait for readers to let me know if I’m hilarious or lame when I do try and write with humor. Then in July, I have “Homemade Hijinks” releasing. Hopefully I’ll have more news to share soon, because I’ve got more manuscripts out in submission land.

CABR: Fingers crossed that all of your submissions get approved and published quickly 😀

Wildly coverSynopsis of “Wildly”:

Shauna Marino left Cottage Grove, California an innocent teenager, gangly, wild and with no fashion sense, always diving headfirst into whatever feelings ruled the moment.

Now, she’s back to fix her mistakes. She’s gained a respectable job, set a plan in motion to benefit the town, and all that’s left is to prove to Grayson Schyler she’s changed. Maybe this time, he won’t tell her no when she shows up naked and asks him to make her a woman.

Grayson Schyler, former Wimbledon champion, would’ve recognized Shauna anywhere. She’s made his life sweeter one moment, and hell the next. As someone in the public eye, he’d gone to great strains not to allow the media to misread their relationship, which wasn’t always easy when Shauna was around. Now she’s back, asking for his help, and all he can think about is if she came back to make him pay for what he’d done.

I can relate! I have 2 brothers that are 6 years older than me and had a few crushes on their friends thought my teens and in my twenties. I often day dreamed about how I’d grow up and wow them one day, they wouldn’t realize that this womanI was the little girl they once knew. That never happened but i guess I really had a thing for older men because I blew the 6yr age difference out of the water by marrying a man 14yrs older than me!!!

  • 😀 Love is love yes Cat

  • juliabarrett says:

Thought I left a comment. I love the concept!

  • Debra Kayn says:

Hi Cat – We’re in the same boat. My brothers are between 6 and 8 years older than me…and I do think I looked up to their friends as cool that it’s easy to admire boys that are older. I married a man who was 12 years older. The age difference isn’t anything now, but it was when was a teenager (yep, married him when I was young).

  • Looks like a fun read.

  • My daughter has suddenly found a renewed interest in tennis that has reached almost obsessive levels. She’s been watching the Australian Open online, recording matches on all the DVRs, and following injury news. 🙂 Too bad she’s too young for this book! LOL

  • Sara @ HarlequinJunkie says:

Hi Debra, Great interview, being a tennis buff and a rookie player of sorts I really enjoyed reading this story.
