Please welcome Ellora’s Cave author, Naima Simone, to CABR. 🙂
Enjoy reading paranormal romance that’s a bit off the beaten path?
Perhaps you fancy an erotic romance?
Then read on to find out how you could WIN one of two books by Naima. 🙂
Using 120 characters or less per book, tell us about BARGAIN WITH THE BEAST and UNDER HIS WINGS.
BARGAIN WITH THE BEAST is an unleashed fairy tale of blackmail, seduction and love. Oh and lotsa hot sex! Not your mama’s bedtime story!
A mythical warrior steps from a woman’s dreams to protect her from a monster hell bent on revenge. She finds love and desire UNDER HIS WINGS.
Were both books written around the same time? How do you juggle multiple plots?
Actually, Bargain with the Beast is a re-release. So I didn’t work on it at the same time I wrote Under His Wings. Their edits overlapped, but not the actual writing process. I don’t know, I can’t work on two different books at one time.
I fully immerse myself into the characters, their histories, their romance and story. It’s difficult for me to flip-flop. For instance, after I finished UHW—which is paranormal—I had to jump into a romantic suspense for another publisher.
It took me a few days to get my head out of a world filled with hippogryphs, magic and erotic love scenes into one with secrets, humans, murder and sensual love scenes. Well…they both had murder. And love. I’m totally losing my point here…
I know people can get tired of hearing romance authors say one of the most difficult scenes to write is a loves scene. It’s like, huh. Yeah. Cry me a river. LOL!
But this scene in BARGAIN WITH THE BEAST was hard because it was a turning point for the hero, Xavier.
He admitted to himself that he wanted more than seven days of submission and sex with the heroine, Gwendolyn.
He desired her heart—he desired all over her. But he still didn’t believe she could see past his scars—physical and emotional. So without further ado…
He wanted Gwen. Nothing less than all of her would do.
From the moment she’d sought him out for help, he’d demanded everything from her—her body, her submission, her trust—and had offered nothing in return.
His turn to put up or shut up had arrived.
He fisted the front of his shirt. A pit yawned wide in his stomach and his heart plummeted toward the dizzying, black depth. The last woman to glimpse what lay under his shirt and pants had been so disgusted she’d abandoned him. Fear coated his mouth, his nostrils. All he tasted and smelled were ash and smoke. For a brief moment, he considered whirling around and walking out. Shame flayed him and the stranglehold he had on his shirt tightened. The idea of baring the map of scars disfiguring his body scared him shitless.
But if he desired her trust, he had to battle his fears, emerge from behind the false protection of pride and seize this last chance to make amends with her. A last chance to show Gwen her fire, touch and uninhibited response meant more than his pride. She meant more.
He inhaled. Exhaled.
And yanked the shirttails from the band of his pants.
The unyielding line of her mouth softened, her lips parted and, as he freed the small buttons from their corresponding holes, her sharp intake of breath reached across the room.
Damn, he loved witnessing the evidence of his effect on her. Hours on a shrink’s couch couldn’t begin to heal his battered, broken spirit like one soft, sensuous gasp from this beautiful, giving woman.
“What are you doing?” she demanded, the small tremble in her voice undermining the show of bravado.
He gripped the sides of the black material, his fingers tightening for a long instant before he shrugged it off his shoulders.
“Getting undressed.” He tugged his belt buckle open. “Now get naked.”
UNDER HIS WINGS is my first paranormal…ever. So the entire book was full of “Oh my God, this sucks!” and “Oh snap! I can’t believe I wrote that!” moments. LOL! No lie, the name on the cover should be Sybil instead of Naima Simone!
That said, picking a favorite scene is difficult because I adore this book! But the scene that comes to mind is a one where the power goes out in a storm, and Tamar lets her guard down with Nicolai.
She’s a survivor of not only an abusive relationship, but a terrible plane crash that has left her with physical scars and phobias of flying and the dark. Here, she allows Nicolai to glimpse her emotional wounds instead of the strength he’s seen up until now.
Tamar waited. Braced herself for the exasperated sigh. The you-got-to-be-kidding-me snarl or the don’t-be-fucking-ridiculous ridicule. She’d heard it so often from Kyle it could have been his mantra.
But unlike her ex, if Nicolai condemned her as absurd or silly, she would be an emotional Humpty Dumpty crushed into so many pieces she wouldn’t be able to put them back together again.
“The power went out with the storm,” he said gently.
As if to underscore his explanation, thunder boomed outside the window.
You know what thunder is, her mother’s voice whispered inside her head. It’s God and the angels bowling. When there’s lightning, God’s made a strike.
It was too much.
The phobic terror of the dark. Memories of Kyle and his cruelty. Nicolai rushing to her rescue.
Tears scalded her eyelids then streamed down her cheeks in hot trails. Sobs rose up out of her soul and clawed past the blockade of pride to pour out in harsh, racking coughs.
Strong arms clamped around her, pulled her to a wide, naked chest. Her cheek stuck to his skin, her tears the glue that bonded them. Over her cries she caught the soothing murmurs he crooned. A hand that could easily frame her head smoothed down her hair and a tender kiss ghosted across her forehead.
Love ya, BARGAIN WITH THE BEAST but UNDER HIS WINGS, hands down!
Because of the myths, the creatures, the battles…like 300 and Clash of the Titans had a drunken one-night-stand and birthed a baby!
I’d beg, plead and sling snot for Peter Jackson to direct a movie based on my book. And I’d cast Stephen Amell (Oliver Queen on Arrow) as Nicolai.
Just have him grow out his hair so it’d hang in his gorgeous face. And for Tamar I’d cast Rochelle Aytes.
Now I love men, but she could make me write a song about kissing a girl and liking it… I’m just saying… 😉
Pantser or plotter?
Plotter. I’m doing it right now as a matter-of-fact.
Chocolate or fruits?
Symphony chocolate bars are the way to my heart and any number of sexual positions that are illegal in about forty-six states.
Other than my bathroom when the kids and hubby aren’t home? Then it’d definitely be a mountain cabin in Gatlinburg, TN. Solitude, beauty, fireplace and a hot tub.
If you could meet anyone from history, living or dead, who would it be and why?
I would love to meet Queen Boudica. She was a queen, a warrior, a leader and a survivor. I can’t imagine the strength, will and fierce courage it required to survive being flogged, having your daughters raped and your land and freedom stolen. Not only did she survive, but she rallied her people and neighboring tribes to uprise against the Roman Empire. I would love to talk to her, find out what she said to herself and her daughters. Discover how she inspired a people to follow her into battle, and even death. I’d definitely love to pick her brain. Maybe introduce her to coffee, put away the swords and chariots as a precaution, and just talk.
