Guest Post & Giveaway: “Rescuing Dawn” by Nicole Flockton

Jun 14

Nicole Flockton is on CABR today!!

Can you tell I’m excited? 🙂

She’s talking about starting over, a central theme in her latest release, RESCUING DAWN, from Crimson Romance.

Over to you Nicole.

STARTING OVER by Nicole Flockton

Nicole-7502-LR-Color-1We’ve all done it. We’ve all had a situation in our life where we’ve had to start over. Most of the times starting over can be due to a tragedy in your life. – a broken relationship being the main one we’ve all suffered through.

For Dawn, in RESCUING DAWN, she’s had a few tragedies that make it difficult for her to try again. She decides that loving again is too much of a risk so she shuts herself away from life. She works the night shift and goes home afterwards. She doesn’t socialize with friends.

I have to admit sometimes she was a little difficult to get moving on trying again, she went backwards and forwards a few times. Eventually she sees the errors of her way – of course it takes a good man to make her see the light!

When you’ve lost the most important people in your life it does take a strong person to pick up the pieces and move on and start over.

I’ve started over a couple of times in new relationships. But the biggest starting over for me was when we moved from Perth Australia to Houston Texas in August 2009.

That was a major move. Some people might not see that as starting over but for me it was. I had to learn to cope without having my mum and dad a quick phone call away. It took me a while not to realize I couldn’t pick up the phone and chat to her – time difference sucks. I had to make new friends – it was scary!

But the good thing about starting over for me has been I’ve actually realized the dream of being published. I often wonder if I was still back in Perth would I be published? Would I have had the drive and determination to send that query email in June 2012. The answer is I’ll never know.

Starting over can be hard but it can also be the most rewarding thing you can do. Have you had to start over again in your life?

Beyond The Page & Giveaway: “Her Wish, His Command” by Malia Mallory

Jun 10

HWHC cover

Thank you Sasha for hosting me today! I’m very excited to talk about my newest release Her Wish, His Command.

Welcome back to CABR, Malia 🙂

What’s HWHC all about?

Her Wish, His Command is the third book in the Dominating BDSM Billionaires Series. The heroine, Anna, has been infatuated with her co-worker Jonah Granger for years. She finally gets the opportunity to pursue a relationship with him, but they have a few obstacles in their way.

Jonah is the brother of Marcus Granger, who was the hero in the first two books in the series. His Need, Her Desire (Book 1) is currently free at most online retailers.

His Desire, Her Surrender (Book 2) hit bestseller lists in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia. I’m currently working on the fourth book His Passion, Her Temptation. Look for it in July.

His_Desire_Her_Surrender_600x900HWHC is the third book in the Dominating BDSM Billionaires Series. Can these books stand-alone?

I think so. Book 1 and 2 both focus on the relationship between Tabitha and Marcus. Book 1 ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, but I think you can read it alone. Book 2 wraps up the relationship between Marcus and Tabitha.

Book 3 focuses on Anna and Jonah and the romance storyline for them is completed.

HPHT coverBook 4, His Passion, Her Temptation, focuses on Monica, the sister of Marcus and Jonah.

There is, however, a thread of corporate espionage that runs through all the books. This situation is not completely resolved until book 4.

So basically, the romance aspects are complete but there are some threads about the business that keep going.

Did Tabitha or Marcus surprise you in book 2?

I think I was surprised by Tabitha’s courage and strength. Choosing to enter into a D/s relationship is a very big decision and she doesn’t take it lightly.

HWHC coverDid you struggle to write a particular scene in Her Wish, His Command? Tell us about it.

I struggled with many scenes. However, one that sticks out is when Anna tries to explain to Jonah about her preferences. He doesn’t know that she likes to be dominated on occasion. Here is a portion of their conversation.

The time had come. After gathering her courage all day, she couldn’t put off the conversation any longer. She wanted to let Jonah know about her sexual interests. The suspense of not knowing how he would react weighed on her. If it turned him off, she’d rather know now.

Anna swallowed her worry. “Jonah?”

“Yes?” His attention remained on his papers.

She joined him at the table. “There’s something I’ve been meaning to discuss with you.”

“Yeah? Okay.” He didn’t look up.

Anna pursed her lips, her impatience growing. “Jonah, I need your attention for this.”

He stopped and looked up. “Sure.”

Anna took a deep breath. “You know the other day when we spent the evening at your apartment?”

“I certainly do.” His eyes gleamed with sensual interest.

Anna tapped her finger on the tabletop. “Okay. Well. At times, you were … forceful.”

“Did that bother you?”

“Oh no. Quite the opposite. I liked it. A lot.” Anna plunged ahead. “In fact, it’s kind of a thing of mine.”

Jonah scratched his chin, rasping against the growing stubble. “A thing?”

Anna tucked her hair behind her ear. “You know. A preference. When you take charge, it turns me on.”

Jonah leaned back in his chair. “So you like an assertive partner.”

“Maybe more than assertive. Dominant.”

Jonah’s eyes narrowed just a bit. “Dominant. Do you mean you want to be submissive?” As usual, Jonah zeroed in on the point.

Will you be attending any book conventions or signings this year?

Unfortunately, no. I hope that in the future I might be able to do something like this.

Spa or Beach vacation?

Favorite type of book to escape reality with?

A romance of course! Lately, I’ve been rereading many of my favorite historical romances.

If you could be anyone for a day, who would you be and why?

I thought about this question for quite a while. There are many things I’d like to experience that I never will. However, I think I’ll stick with what I have. The troubles you know are better than the troubles you don’t, right?

But Granger Pharma faces a hostile takeover. Sensitive data and samples are missing from Anna and Jonah’s lab; it may be corporate espionage. Excerpt #2:

Jonah sipped from his cup. “This coffee is better than usual. What did you do?”

“I washed out the pot and filter?” Anna laughed and threw her braid back over her shoulder. Wasn’t playing with hair supposed to be a flirty thing to do? She glanced into Jonah’s eyes and saw his pupils dilate ever so slightly.

Jonah placed his cup on the counter. “I usually just dump the old coffee.”

Anna reached to top him off, making sure she grazed him again. She turned and put the coffee pot back in its place. Her hip bumped him.

“Anna?” he asked in a deep, questioning tone.

“Yes?” She paused. “Jonah?” She drew his name out on her tongue.

His eyes locked with hers. “What’s this about?”

Anna broke eye contact as his scrutiny became too intense. “What’s what about?”

“This.” He gestured toward her. “Is this about yesterday?”

Anna wasn’t sure where to go with her plan. “Yesterday?” She feared her manner gave the impression of stupid instead of coy.

“Yes, yesterday. We had a moment, for lack of a better term. Is this some game?”

Anna straightened. “Game? What is that supposed to mean?” Her voice lost its teasing edge.

“It means that either you are trying to needle me or maybe … maybe you want something?”

Anna frowned. “Those are the only two explanations?”

Jonah considered for an instant. “Anna, you’re not interested in me, are you?”

Anna thumped her mug on the counter. “Of course not.” Color rose in her face.

“Anna, about yesterday. I didn’t mean to be unprofessional.” His apologetic manner unnerved her.

“You were not unprofessional,” Anna bit out. What a disaster. Was he going to say something kind? Anna didn’t think she could bear the embarrassment.

Jonah took her hand lightly in his. Her hand trembled, and Anna was sure he felt it. “Are you afraid?” He looked into her eyes. “Or aroused?”

Anna swayed as his calloused thumb stroked her palm. The lab seemed to shrink, the walls gathering close around them.

He tugged on her hand, bringing to his lips. He nipped her fingertip.

Anna struggled to remain impassive as her blood surged. She sensed she hadn’t fooled Jonah with her imperfect façade of calm.

A predatory masculine smile crossed his face. “I see.” He sucked her fingertip into his mouth.

Beyond The Page & Giveaway: “Fourteen Pages” by James Fant

Jun 7

14-Pages Ebook Cover New.

Welcome to CABR James 🙂

What is Fourteen Pages really about?

Fourteen Pages is about Marco and Venice Goldsmith: a desperate couple trying to save their wreck of a marriage. A self-proclaimed marriage expert proposes a bizarre 14-page contract that stipulates (in great detail) the dos and don’ts of their relationship.

Of course the contract includes consequences for violating any of the predetermined rules of their marriage. The question is can they truly follow the contract to the letter without someone being seriously injured?

Why did you write this book?

I wrote this book to look at romance from a different angle. Many romance novels are about single people who are building that love that normally leads to marriage. In Fourteen Pages, Marco and Venice are already married. Romantic tension and excitement doesn’t end with marriage. In reality, that’s when it really starts to become most fun and most challenging.

I also wrote Fourteen Pages to answer a “what if” question. Marriage licenses are routine. Marriage contracts are not. So I was thinking one day, possibly after a good argument with my wife, what if marriage contracts were required just like marriage licenses. And what if those contracts included rules and regulations to govern every aspect of the marriage? Perhaps the contract would govern discretionary spending.

Maybe it would govern how many children the couple will have. Or the number of times per week that the couple will have sex. One would think that if two people came together in matrimony with that sort of document, they should have absolutely no troubles. That may or may not be the case. I wanted to have fun with the question and I actually had a lot of fun with it.

How would you describe yourself as an author? What types of books do you write?

James Fant photoI’m a story teller. Whether that story is romance, suspense, or mystery, I want to weave a thrilling tale that readers will not want to put down.

I love twists but I’d rather use one big twist than several small ones. I feel like using multiple twists cheapens a story.

Finally, as an author I like to mix fantasy with reality, to write scenes that catch readers off guard.

I write inspirational romance and suspense. The thing that I love about writing fiction is you can create this wonderful and exciting story with lots of twists and turns. But the story can also have meaningful characters and situations that readers can identify with and learn from.

What’s next for you in 2013?

I will release two more novels before the end of 2013. The first is a romance novel about a woman who has the power to make her boyfriend do whatever she desires. The second is the beginning of a series of novels about an undercover FBI agent who must do the unthinkable to infiltrate a criminal organization.

Favourite type of book to read for fun?

Romantic suspense

Ideal vacation?

Royal Caribbean Cruise

Coffee or Tea?

Definitely Coffee

If you could spend a day with someone famous, living or dead, who would it be and why?

I would love to spend a day with Shonda Rhimes. I love her work on the TV show “Scandal”, how she grips and surprises her viewers.

I would fill that day with questions about character and plot development. I would probably spend that entire day taking notes.

Beyond The Page & Giveaway: “Singapore Fling” by Alexia Adams

Jun 2

Singapore Fling Cover.

Today is  release day for Crimson Romance author, Alexia Adams 🙂

To celebrate, she’s offering one lucky blog commentator an eBook copy of her book, SINGAPORE FLING.

The answer to the Giveaway question can be found in her interview.

Welcome to CABR Alexia.

What inspired you to write about a heroine searching for her biological mother in a contemporary romance?

To be honest, I didn’t set out to write a story about a search for a birth mother. I loved the name, Lalita (from the move Bride & Prejudice), so I wanted to use that name for one of my characters (my husband refused to let me name my daughter Lalita).

But I wanted her to be a woman that on the surface had it all in control, while underneath she was a wracked with doubts about her own place in life and her family.

When did the hero, Jeremy Lakewood, come into the picture? (When the story was still an idea?)

Actually, Jeremy was my starting point for the whole novel. I was waiting to pick up my children from school one day, and a line from My Fair Lady kept running through my head, “…oozing charm from every pore, he oiled his way across the floor.” A charming, smooth-operator was born.

I know you’re a seasoned backpacker who has travelled to many countries. 🙂

How many of the eight Asian nations visited by Lalita Evans and Jeremy in SINGAPORE FLING have you been to?

Alexia Adams photo2I’ve been to five: Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines and India (although I was in the north of India, not Mumbai area).

Lalita and Jeremy also go to China, Japan and Indonesia, which I haven’t visited…yet.

Did you struggle to write a particular scene? Please tell us about it.

I think the hardest scent to write was when Lalita and Jeremy go to the slum area in Mumbai in their search for her birth mother.

I wanted to be sensitive to the difficulties that the people in this area live in, while also portraying the desperation that has caused some to do things we find unthinkable in our area of the world.

I did a lot of research and fell back on an experience I had visiting a shanty town in Central America.

Here’s an excerpt from the scene:

As they approached the slum dwellings, Lalita was relieved to have Jeremy’s strong arm around her waist. If he hadn’t been there for her, she would have chickened out. She stepped carefully, lifting the hem of her sari. The smell of garbage and unwashed bodies was overpowering.

A young boy in bare feet and tattered clothes approached and asked them for some money.

“He says he knows the woman but claims she doesn’t speak Marathi. He’s offered to take us there and translate. His name is Pradesh.” Lalita explained to Jeremy after a long exchange with the child.

“Do you trust him?” Jeremy eyed the young lad.

“Not entirely, but I don’t see any other options.”

“Are you sure you want to do this, Lalita? You have a family that loves you. What point is there in raising questions now?”

“I need to know.”

“Then that’s all I need to know. Come on, I can’t wait to get back to the hotel and have a shower. I think something just crawled up my leg.”

Lalita took his hand and gave it a squeeze then hurried to follow the boy. He led them through a warren of passages until Lalita was sure they had gone in circles at least twice. She had seen Jeremy taking careful notice of their surroundings and making discreet marks on some of the corrugated metal walls as they passed.

At last the boy indicated a small shed and called out the name Lalita had been given. A woman’s voice answered and the boy disappeared inside. A minute later, he reappeared and motioned for Lalita and Jeremy to enter.

Lalita stooped to pass through the doorway, bending almost double to get inside. As soon as she entered, she wished she hadn’t. The only place to sit was on the mud floor and the roof was too low to stand upright. A gnarled old woman lay on a filthy mattress not even bothering to shoo away the flies that buzzed about her unwashed body.

Jeremy stuck his head inside. Lalita motioned for him to wait outside, which he seemed grateful to do.

“Please tell her that I’ve come to ask about a baby that was born twenty-eight years ago,” Lalita said to Pradesh. The boy repeated the question in the old woman’s language.

The woman got on her knees and crawled over to where Lalita crouched as close to the door as possible. Wanting to vomit from the stench emanating from the woman, Lalita held her breath. The filthy creature put a deformed hand up to her cheek. They searched each other’s eyes in the dim light. Before answering the boy, the hag crawled back to the mattress.

“She says you are her daughter. She doesn’t remember who the father is. She sold you to a rich, white couple when you were a few days old. She wants some money.”

Nausea welled up into Lalita’s throat. How could this woman be her mother? Glancing around the tiny room which could have been her home, she tried to disguise the dry heaves behind a cough. She took a deep breath through her mouth, however, she could taste the rank air.

“I don’t believe her. Does she have any proof?” Lalita managed to get out. This couldn’t be true. Why had she even wanted to find her real mother? The one she had in England was loving and kind, why had she felt a need to find a different one? Especially one that sold babies?

Pradesh translated Lalita’s question. The old woman laughed so hard a wet stain appeared on the mattress around her thighs. She spoke again.

“She says the paperwork must be in her other house,” Pradesh said. “She wants money.”

“There is no money,” Lalita stated. She had to leave. Before Pradesh even translated the sentence the woman moved like a cockroach when the light turns on and grabbed Lalita’s wrist in an iron grip. Lalita cried out.

Jeremy ducked into the room and pulled the old woman’s hand from Lalita’s. The woman scurried back onto the mattress. Jeremy placed himself between the woman and Lalita.

What’s next for you in 2013? Any book signings perhaps?

I don’t have any definite plans for 2013. I hope to attend some author/reader events in my area (Vancouver, BC, Canada) as well as the Surrey International Writers’ Conference. I’ve already told my husband I want to go to RWA2014, especially as I expect to have a few more books out by then.

Chocolates or fruits?

Is chocolate covered fruit an option? Chocolate, as long as it’s dark. I like my chocolate like my man — dark and nutty.

Favourite type of book to escape reality with?

A good contemporary romance. I especially like stories where the woman has the power and the alpha male has to try to cope.

If you could spend the day with anyone in history, living or dead, who would it be and why?

It’s hard to pick just one, but I think it would have to be Catherine the Great, the Russian Empress in the 1700s. I have a quirky love of Russian history and an interest in strong women. I’d love to know how many of the stories about her are true or manifestations of the envious male-dominated society she ruled.
