What I didn’t do on my Summer Vacation by Jamie K. Schmidt

I didn’t lose 20 lbs (pounds).

I didn’t watch the VMAs.

I didn’t go to a drive-in movie.

I didn’t watch any fireworks.

I only got to the beach once.  I only swam in my friend’s pool once.  We only had one cook out. My son’s school pants aren’t hemmed.

Summer can’t be over!  There are just too many summery things left to do and do again. Like making homemade ice cream!  We made a batch of coffee and one of vanilla.  I would have liked to have added some fresh picked strawberries and some of the Mexican Vanilla extract I just bought to the vanilla in order to make a scrumptious strawberry ice cream.  I think I still have some waffle cones and there’s still some summer left, so maybe that will be my weekend project. And then there’s all the summer reading I never got to.  My TBR pile is threatening to topple over and kill the cat.

But no matter what season I’m in, though, I’m always writing.  In addition to school starting up, my romantic suspense novella UNDERCOVER LOVER is coming out September 13th. To celebrate it, I’ll be giving out a pair of nesting doll earrings on my release day. (See below for details)

The nesting doll – or Matryoshka — plays an important part in my story.  When I was a little girl one of my Aunts brought back a wooden Matryoshka doll from Russia for me.  It was hand painted and at the time I didn’t appreciate the craftsmanship that went into the doll.  All I wanted to do was twist open the dolls to see the prizes inside.  The biggest doll when opened, gave way to a smaller twin and so on until the very end when the final wooden doll was the size of my pinkie.  I would try so hard to pry that little doll open, because I was so sure there was an even tinier one inside.  But to no avail, the doll smiled serenely at me and never gave up her secrets.

The main character of my novella, Pamela Krupin, is also keeping secrets.  As a psychologist and a certified Reiki practitioner, she sees many types of clients. They tell her things.  Usually it’s not a problem until someone thinks one of her clients is lightening his soul by confessing to deeds that should remain hidden – like dolls within a bigger doll.

The book starts off when summer’s heat is turning into fall because even though I’ll miss summer, autumn is my favorite time of the year.  I live in New England, so I’ve got the leaves turning gold, orange and red to look forward to.  Then there’s football Sundays with a new chili recipe in the slow cooker each week.  Baked homemade bread.  Pumpkin scented candles. Halloween costumes – and ½ price candy the day after.  Candy corn! Thanksgiving – my mother-in-laws sausage stuffing is the best.  So are her yams with marshmallows toasted on top.  And then there’s . . . Nope.  Not even going to think about the holidays yet.  That would truly be rushing the season.

I hope you pick up my book and enjoy it.  I’ll even share my not-so-secret Russian chili recipe with you for those chilly autumn evenings. It’s very simple, yummy, and makes enough to feed the Russian army.

Dump a two cans of fire roasted diced tomatoes, and a can each of black beans, cannelloni (white) beans, and kidney beans into the slow cooker.

Add a lb of either ground beef, ground turkey or Boca meatless crumbles into the pot, mixing it very well with the beans.

Add two chopped onions, and two chopped green peppers. Sprinkle salt, pepper, and sweet Hungarian paprika on top and mix again.

Let simmer on low for 8-10 hours.  Serve with sour cream, beer, and Russian black bread or pumpernickel.

  • Unfortunately, I did not meet my summer goal of getting married to the man I love. Due to financial difficulties, we have had to postpone it for a while. kbinmich@yahoo.com

  • I have met all my goals so far been a good summer.

  • Gail Chianese says:

Did we have summer? I didn’t notice with my butt chained to the chair in front of my computer all summer long. Thankfully September is still a beautiful month and less people will be at the beach – so there’s still time. As for those 20lbs…let’s not discuss it. My TBR pile, I’ve hit a few on the list as it’s the only way to shut my story off and get some sleep. But yes, I missed the drive-in this year too and home-made ice cream. Sounds yummy, let me know when it’s on the menu, I’m coming over (LOL..that is if either of us find the time). Love the sound of the Russian chili and have saved it for one of these fall/winter nights. Can’t wait to read Undercover Lover!

    • Thanks Gail! Yeah, I hear you about the butt in chair. I wanted to go out on my dad’s boat too this summer, but just couldn’t swing it. But you’re right about September still having some gorgeous days in it to squeeze in that last bit of summer!

    didn’t make any goals

  • Rena B says:

This was my last summer before college and I did quite a lot of things I enjoyed. I celebrated my parents’ 29th wedding anniversary, my dad’s birthday, went to a One Direction concert, Bruno Mars concert, went on a Washington D.C. road trip, a NYC road trip and a camping trip with my family, as well as going to a Cody Simpson and a Jana Kramer concert, and ending the break with redoing my whole room!! and I read over 25 books in the past 4.5 weeks I love it. 🙂

  • Lissa Trevor says:

Wow! You’ve been busy! Sounds like a lot of fun!
