Review: Make sure you have some tissues handy when you start to read CROSSING THE LINE because Kele Moon will have you crying, laughing, swearing and cheering, as Wyatt Conner and Tabitha McMillen travel a very difficult road to Happy Ever After.
Chapter One opens with Tabitha returning home after 13 years to help care for her ailing, alcoholic, mother. The strained interaction lets you in on Tab’s rough childhood but it’s when her older brother Brett makes an appearance that you *really* begin to freak out about what the h*ll happened to send Wyatt’s girl running all those years ago.
Her reunion with Wyatt comes at an embarrassing time but it’s in that vulnerable moment that you can almost see their souls rejoicing at being together again. It also comes with a shocker about their past.
(But I’m keeping spoilers to a minimum here to allow you to experience the same surprises I did).
After 13 years apart, Tab and Wy (their nicknames for one another) can’t keep their hands off each other. That was one hawt scene 😉
The emotional and sexual reconnection leads Tab and Wy down memory lane…all the way back to the Third Grade. Wy was so adorable in his innocent determination to make Tab “his girl” 🙂
Your heart breaks though, upon finding out that Wyatt’s gesture of goodwill; cookies, may very well be the *only* thing Tabitha and her best friend Clay (DEFYING THE ODDS, BH #1) have to eat that day.
Hunger, physical abuse and emotional abuse are sadly par for the course in their homes while Wyatt and his twin sister Jules live fairly normal lives. Apart from worry over the safety of their father, the sheriff.
If you’ve read the first two books, you *know* how stubborn the Conners can be. Wyatt’s conviction, even at the tender age of eight, that Tabitha was “the one” ended up being the catalyst for them getting together as a couple in high school 🙂
It had to be kept secret for reasons that will be obvious as you read CTL.
Remember that heartbreak I mentioned earlier? It happens at this point in the book.
I cried for Tabitha, and for Wyatt, at their sudden loss. I also wanted someone to beat the heck out of those responsible.
Fast-forward to the present day and we can now fit the puzzle pieces together . There’s no instant HEA declaration of feelings and confessions of secrets. The BATTERED HEARTS SERIES is about real life issues and how one struggles with them when you fall in love.
Kele Moon skillfully weaves in the characters from books 1 and 2 into the resolution of Tab and Wy’s journey to HEA. Fans of the series will likely squeal at certain points and smile in the knowledge that Clay and Melody, Jules and Romeo (STAR CROSSED) are still going strong.
There’s a close call for Jules near the end of CTL but she pulls through 🙂
I can’t *wait* to read the rest of the (as-yet unwritten) books in the series! 😀
Book 3 in the BATTERED HEARTS SERIES can be read as a stand-alone but I highly recommend reading the series in order, to get a full appreciation for the other characters mentioned in CTL, as well as to for the chance to know Wyatt the mysterious adult. It means so much more when he opens up in book 3, having wondered about his history with the rarely-mentioned Tabitha.

Synopsis: Wyatt Conner is a hard man. A sixth generation sheriff in his hometown of Garnet. A former MMA fighter. His life is about following the rules and making sure everyone else in Garnet follows them too.
Before life hurt him, Wyatt was a different person. Love had once blinded him to his upbringing and made him defiant against anyone who tried to separate him from the girl he loved. He easily broke laws to ensure her safety.
When she left it destroyed him.
Now she’s back.
Tabitha knows coming home is a mistake, but family obligation demands it. Of course she would run smack into the love of her life the day she returns.
Despite the danger, Tabitha is powerless against the wild rush of desire that explodes between them the moment she finds herself in Wyatt’s arms again. They deserve a second chance, both of them, but she can’t risk Wyatt finally discovering the real reason she left.
He broke the rules for her once, and now her haunted past threatens the man she loves–the man he’s become–again. If he learns everything she’s suffered, he’ll cross the lines to take revenge. Tabitha just can’t risk it. Not even for another taste of true love.
