The Billion Dollar Bachelor coverJackie Ashenden’s guest post, “It’s All About the Happy Ending”:

.

Hi everyone and thanks to Sasha for having me on the blog today. What I want to talk to you about today is why I write the romance that I do.

I have three different publishers and yes my stories for each of my publishers are all slightly different, but at the heart of it, all my stories are about the same thing: it doesn’t matter how broken you are, how undeserving of love you feel, you too will find your happy ending.

.

I’ve been writing since I was twelve years old and most of my friends and family knew I loved to write.

But when I finally ‘came out’ that I was writing romance and that I intended to try getting published as a romance author, one of the first questions they asked was ‘but are you ever going to write anything else?’

And the answer to that is: Never say never but chances are I probably won’t.

.

Falling For Finn coverRomance is what I love to write because human relationships are the glue that holds society together and I’m fascinated by them, especially romantic relationships. Love is an awesome thing and it has a lot of power, and exploring the pain and heartache and joy that goes along with falling in love is an amazing thing for an author.

.

Let’s face it, real life can suck so hard sometimes. And part of what I adore most about being a writer is the fact that I can take two broken people and give them the happy ending they deserve.  Because there really aren’t enough happy endings in this world.

.

And that’s really the essence of all my books, whether they’re about billionaires or construction company owners, manga artists or beauty queens, New York or New Zealand. I’m taking the bad things that life throws at people regardless of social standing, race, colour or creed, and rewriting all the awful endings into happy ones.

Because I guess I want to put a little more love out there in the world. Give people a little more of the joy, a little more of the optimism. The sense that bad things can happen to you but you’ll be okay and that happiness is possible. In fact, it’s not only possible but necessary and deserved.

.

Talking Dirty with the CEO coverSome of my romances are lighter, some of them are dark, but they all work on the premise that love is powerful and amazing.

Yes, sometimes the characters are larger than life – billionaires! – and sometimes so are the situations – a movie star’s mansion in Beverly Hills! – but the heart of my books is something every single person in the whole world can relate to – we all want love and a happy ending (even though sometimes we won’t admit it).

.

What about you guys?

Why do you read romance? Is it about escapism or something else?

And do you shout about it or is it a guilty pleasure? And what’s your favourite kind to read?

Jackie Ashenden pictureABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Jackie Ashenden has been writing fiction since she was eleven years old. Mild mannered fantasy/SF/pseudo-literary writer by day, obsessive romance writer by night, she used to balance her writing with the more serious job of librarianship until a chance meeting with another romance writer prompted her to throw off the shackles of her day job and devote herself to the true love of her heart – writing romance.

She particularly likes to write dark, emotional stories with alpha heroes who’ve just got the world to their liking only to have it blown wide apart by their kick-ass heroines.

.

She lives in Auckland, New Zealand with her husband, the inimitable Dr Jax, two kids, two cats and some guppies (possibly dead guppies by the time you read this).

When she’s not torturing alpha males and their stroppy heroines, she can be found drinking chocolate martinis, reading anything she can lay her hands on, posting random crap on her blog, or being forced to go mountain biking with her husband.

Why do I read romance? Escapism, wanting to know people can be happy, the chance to root for that sigh worthy moment … well, and it’s fun!

  • Christine L. says:

I read romance (as any genre) as a form of escapism. While I don’t advertise my reading preferences, neither do I hesitate to share them. PNR is my favorite subgenre.
