Guest post by Alyssa J Montgomery:

Australian media tycoon, Jake Formosa, does not believe in forgiving but he’s desperate to forget Amanda so he can get on with his life. Now Amanda is widowed, Jake wants revenge on this woman he loved — a woman who left him heartbroken when she married a wealthy older man.

In seeking to heal himself, Jake takes advantage of Amanda’s desperate financial situation and offers her payment if she agrees to be his mistress for a month. She agrees, but things do not play out as he intended.

Rather than getting her out of his system, he finds himself more addicted. Then, the web of lies around Amanda’s marriage begin to unravel and Jake finds himself well and truly ensnared. Can he overlook the past and risk his heart again?

.

This story is full of emotion — and plenty of bitter emotion as both Jake and Amanda have been very badly hurt by each other. Jake finds himself so conflicted, acting way out-of-character and he doesn’t like the way he’s behaving or the cutting things he says, but he’s loved Amanda so deeply he’s having difficulty coming to terms with what he believes to have been her betrayal.

I chose this scene to share as it is clear that Jake is bitterly cutting in the things he says, but even that provides him with conflict as he confesses he isn’t proud of the way he’s acting. Amanda’s bound by confidences or she’d be able to set Jake straight. As much as she’s hurt by Jake, she starts to get a glimmer that the end of their affair did impact on him.

Both characters go through the emotional wringer before they are resolved. I’d like to think that because their situation has seemed so hopeless, it makes their happy-ever-after even more satisfying.

EXCERPT from “Echoes of the Heart”:

‘Paying for you reminds me you’re a mercenary call-girl who’s always available to the highest bidder,’ he threw at her contemptuously.

‘You’re turning me into one,’ she whispered with regret. His words were like talons ripping at her heart. They tore. She bled.

A momentary look of regret crossed his features. ‘Hell, Amanda. I don’t much like what you’re turning me into, either,’ he confessed raggedly. ‘This isn’t the way I usually do things. It isn’t the way I speak to people or treat people, but you bring out the worst in me. I can’t forgive or forget that you left my bed and shared Bennett’s for the money.’

Amanda flinched. Jake was way off base.‘You’re wrong.’ She ached to throw the truth of her marriage into his face, but she couldn’t. ‘But you’ve forced me to sell myself to you and I will never forgive you for it.’

‘You put yourself up for sale. Don’t pretend you don’t want to share my bed.’

‘I came to you for a job, Jake. Honest work for an honest day’s pay.’

‘And here you are undertaking a profession as old as time itself.’

‘You’re the devil. You’re taking advantage of my desperation. You used me back then and you’re still using me now.’

His features hardened in outraged anger. ‘You were the one who used me! It galls me to admit it, sweetheart, but I get hard just thinking about you and what we shared together. That’s why I’m doing this. I’m getting you out of my system.’

‘What you’re doing is destroying anything that was ever remotely good between us.’

‘Good?’ His laugh was bitter. ‘The only thing remotely good between us was sex. All the rest was lies.’

‘And there’s the truth of it.’ She would not cry at his hard summation of their relationship. ‘You lied to me every time you looked at me as if I was something special. You built me up just to send me crashing down.’

One hand reached out and clasped her wrist. ‘I don’t know what you’re playing at, but —’

‘Playing?’ she interjected resentfully. ‘I don’t think so. You’ve turned me into a working girl, remember?’

‘Oh, I remember what you are.’ His voice was harsh. ‘So, don’t expect me to shower you in champagne and roses.’

‘I don’t. I know you’re a two-timing bastard.’

‘You truly believe I was cheating on you?’

‘Of course I believe it…How many affairs did you have during your six month marriage before your wife finally got sick of your infidelity and decided to divorce you?’

Jake ground his teeth together. ‘There was never any infidelity in my marriage…but there was one woman who came between me and my wife. You stopped me from being the husband Sophie deserved…I’m not proud about my need for you, Amanda. At the end of this month I will be ready to move on. This time you will be the one to languish in the despair of sleepless nights, haunted by the passion we’ve shared. That will be justice.’

She frowned. Surely he didn’t expect her to believe that he’d suffered when their affair was over?

Alyssa J Montgomery pictureABOUT THE AUTHOR:

As a child, Alyssa J Montgomery was always writing or co-writing stories in her spare time. Having loved being caught up in characters and their conflicts in romance stories since her late teens, the delivery of happy-ever-after endings means that Romance is still her favourite genre to read.

.
Alyssa still has a busy private practice where she works as a Speech-Language Pathologist – mainly with children with developmental disorders, literacy difficulties and autism. She has also been a professional pianist and worked for Qantas Airways as an International Flight Attendant.

.
Alyssa lives with her husband and three children in New South Wales, Australia on a five acre property. They have a menagerie of animals and also enjoy occasional visits from deer, wallabies, echidna and the daily morning singing of numerous varieties of native birds.

.
Spare time is fairly limited with three children, however dinner parties with friends, gardening and playing tennis or saddling up the horses and going for a trail ride, are favourite activities.
