Beyond The Page: “Bound By Her Ring” by Nicole Flockton

Feb 1

Bound By Her Ring coverIt’s my pleasure to welcome Escape Publishing author, Nicole Flockton, to my blog today. 😀

She’s her to tell us about her book “Bound By Her Ring“, which went on sale today.

CABR: Nicole, what inspired this story?

NF: I was hit with a scene of a gala event and a woman standing in the middle of the room surrounded by people but seeming to be all alone.

CABR: Did the hero or heroine come to you first?

NF:  Jasmine, my heroine, came first. As I said I had this impression she was all alone in a roomful of people and I immediately thought why? What happened to her? So I started writing and she started talking to me. Then, Luciano, turned up and well he just stood out and demanded I do things his way.

CABR: Let’s have some fun Nicole 🙂 Paperbacks or eBooks?

NF: Both!!

Nicole Flockton picCABR: Panster or planner when writing?

NF: Oh definitely a Panster but I’m trying to become a mixture of both.

CABR: Mac or PC?

NF: Well I have a PC but hubby is trying to convert me to Mac.

CABR: Both are cool. 🙂 Sugary or salty snacks?

NF: OOH I like both. But I think the sugary ones win out more than the salty ones.

CABR: Which character from fiction, yours or another author’s, would you like to spend time with and why?

NF: There was a firefighter trilogy, set in a place called Hidden Cove, written by Kathryn Shay back in 1999 and 2000. I’d love to talk to them. Their characters just jumped off the page to me. I want to know how many kids they have and how everyone is! 😀

CABR: Sounds good. I’ll have to check the series out. 🙂 What’s next for you in 2013?

NF: Well after this release I have a June release. That release is an off shoot from my first book “Masquerade“. This story features Dawn who had a major tragedy and closed herself off from the world, to a certain extent. Until a former high school sweetheart storms into her life again and is determined to make her smile and live again. I also want to try and get another book out towards the end of the year so I need to get writing.

Bound By Her Ring coverCABR: Wishing you all the best Nicole! 🙂

Synopsis of “Bound By Her Ring“:  Luciano Morelli has perfected a plan to get revenge on his runaway wife; confronting her at the opening gala for her father’s hotel. What he didn’t plan on was the flaring of emotions the moment he sees her again.

Jasmine Anderson has no memories of her husband. Her only link to him are the wedding rings she wears. Luciano storms back into her life announcing he is her husband, demanding she join him on a business trip or see her father’s livelihood crumble.

Passion reignites as they rediscover what first drew them together. But more than just memories are lost. Can their bond be rebuilt or will secrets infect their already shattered trust?

Beyond The Page: “Falling for Her Fiance” by Cindi Madsen

Jan 31

FFHF coverWelcome to Caribbean Accent Book Reviews Cindi 😀

Cindi MadsenThanks so much! So thrilled to be here!

CABR: Congrats on the release of “Falling For Her Fiance” earlier this month. Tell us about the inspiration for this book.

CM: My editors were talking about their wish list for the Bliss line, something I’d talked with my editor about writing, and she said she loved the friends to lovers storyline.

Her editing assistant said she wanted a fake engagement. That night when I went to go to sleep, suddenly I was thinking about friends who fake an engagement.

I started thinking of how funny it’d be as they lied their way through it, and all the slip ups and forced proximity & faked kissing that had them start wondering how much was fake. I couldn’t fall asleep until I had the whole thing mostly outlined in my head. I knew I had to write it ASAP.

CABR: Don’t you just love when it ‘flows’ like that? 🙂 When done well, the best friends trope is takes the reader on a journey to love like no other. Is this why you chose to make Danielle and Wes best friends?

Cindi Madsen Bio PhotoCM: I love that storyline! I think so many times in life, romance isn’t just about the other person but also the timing.

Dani & Wes have always had this fun, challenge-each-other, joking relationship that they never wanted to mess up & being friends comes naturally.

They’ve been living in different states for a while, though, and part of their scheme is so that they can spend some time together. Only everything starts feeling different between them.

Then you get the push and pull of what they want, versus their fears of losing someone important if it doesn’t work out in the end. I think that’s what makes the best friends trope so popular. It’s a risk either way.

CABR: Did you listen to a particular album or song while writing “Falling For Her Fiance“?

CM: I always make playlists. The theme songs were “Shattered” by O.A.R. & “Running Back to You” by Matt Wertz, that both talk about always coming back to the same person, no matter what. The Fray’s “She Is”, I listened to Kelly Clarkson, for reasons mentioned in the book, and I’d just discovered the Lumineers. The entire playlist for the book is here: http://cindimadsen.com/Music.html

stilettosCABR: I understand you’re a shoe fanatic 🙂 Stilettos or wedge heels?

CM: Stilettos!

CABR: Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts coffee? If you’re a tea person, Lipton or Twinings?

CM: Funny enough, I don’t drink coffee or tea. I drink Mountain Dew. Lots & lots of Mountain Dew.

CABR: Interesting 🙂 ‘Pantser’ or plotter of books?

CM: Panster. I couldn’t sleep until I had the basic outline of this book, but it was more a scene here & there. Then I just start writing & see what happens with that in mind.

CABR: Have you ever freaked out when meeting a favourite author or have you had a fan moment like that?

CM: I totally fan-girl anytime Jeri Smith-Ready & Myra McEntire tweet with me. I’ve met Kelley Armstrong, Beth Kendrick, Maggie Stiefvater (so much fan girling there, especially since I had to have an actual convo with her) Marie Lu, and Gayle Foreman. And honestly, the team of authors at Entangled have become great friends & there will be freaking out & hugging when I meet them in person at RT this year.

FFHF coverCABR: We have got to link up at RT 2013! 🙂 Beach getaway or shopping trip?

CM: Beach getaway. I LOVE the beach. Miss it like crazy. Thanks for stopping by to chat about your book and letting us into your writing world. 🙂 Thanks so much for having me! Great questions!

Beyond The Page: “Yours at Midnight” by Robin Bielman

Jan 30

YAM coverI’m excited to chat with Quinn Sobel on CABR today. 🙂

He’s the hero from Robin Bielman‘s book “Yours at Midnight“, an Ever After novel from Entangled Publishing.

“Yours at Midnight: synopsis: Lyric Whetsone only had eyes for Quinn Sobel’s brother Oliver, until a car crash took Oliver’s life on New Year’s Eve. Then, a moment of shared grief between Quinn and Lyric became something more impassioned, something that frightened Quinn so much he ran from Lyric’s bed and her life, disappearing for four long years.

Now Quinn’s back for another New Year’s Eve, struggling for closure, desperate to leave his grief in the past and make amends with the girl of his dreams.

But Lyric has a secret–one that could drive Quinn from her life forever. Will Quinn run away from the love and acceptance he’s always wanted…or will he claim his New Year’s kiss and make her his at midnight?

Robin here ~ thanks so much for having Quinn visit today, Sasha! I’m just going to make myself comfortable over here on this lounge chair and take in the ocean. It’s so gorgeous! I may never leave. 😀

CABR: Isn’t it gorgeous! St Maarten has some amazing views. Hope you get to visit the island one day 😀

STEP UP 3Welcome to CABR Quinn.

Quinn: Thanks for inviting me, Sasha

  • Is this your first time visiting a book review blog?

Quinn: Lyric and I recently visited one. I’m sorry she couldn’t make it today, but I’m happy to be here. The view is amazing. (Lifts elbow up onto the back of his chair, leans to the side)

  • Do you feel your story was properly told by Robin Bielman?

Quinn: Robin did a great job. I’ve got to admit, a few of the details she coaxed out of me made me uncomfortable, but Lyric helped settle down my nerves.

CABR: Aww.

  • Who would you like to play you in a movie about your life?

Quinn: That’s flattering of you to ask. I’m not a big movie buff, but Lyric recently told me I resemble some guy named Rick Malambri (see photo), so I’ll go with him.

CABR: Handsome fella 😉 W

  • hat did you think of love and committed relationships before you became involved with Lyric Whetstone?

Quinn: I’ve always believed in it. Hell, my parents set a great example. But I didn’t know if it was in the cards for me. Wasn’t sure I could gamble with my heart like that. But the second I saw Lyric again, I knew I was screwed. I’d loved her my whole life and it was about time I did something about it.

YAM coverCABR:

  • How did you deal with the grief of losing your brother, Oliver and then ‘hooking up’ with Lyric briefly four years ago?

Quinn: (Runs a hand through his hair) I didn’t deal at all. I pushed away my feelings and my family and friends. That was easier than talking. After I left, not a day went by that I didn’t think about Lyric, though.

  • What’s your favourite way to relax?

Quinn: I don’t think I can share that with you. *winks*

CABR: 🙂

  • Are you a chocolate, fruits or veggies kind of guy?

Quinn: Strawberries dipped in chocolate and fed to Lyric. *smiles*

  • Do you have a special getaway that you like to take Lyric to?

Quinn: (Leans forward, whispers) Actually, I’m surprising her and taking her to Italy for Valentine’s Day. Rome, Venice, the Amalfi Coast. Between my parents and hers, I’ve got Max covered and I plan to… (straightens up) let’s just say I plan to indulge her every fantasy.

CABR: Wow. Lucky lady 🙂

  • What can you tell us about Robin’s next book? Will it be about a friend or family member of yours?

Quinn: (Glances at Robin, Robin waves) I know she’s got a couple of stories in the works, but not with anyone I know. Never say never, though.

CABR: I had so much fun chatting with you Quinn. Robin, thanks for stopping as well. Glad you enjoyed the view 🙂

As my regular followers know, I love Giveaways and today’s interview is no exception 😀

Guest Post & Giveaway: “To Iraq and Back” by Jessica Scott

Jan 29

To IRaq and Back coverMilitary romances are a genre many of us enjoy, particularly when told with skill and knowledge.

Some authors, like today’s guest blogger and author, Jessica Scott, do so from their own personal experience on the frontlines.

Jessica has agreed to do an amazing SIX-book Giveaway; 3 per winner, so be sure to POST A COMMENT stating your preferences, then ENTER the RAFFLECOPTER to be eligible.

JS: Thanks so much for having me here today!

I guess y’all are probably wondering what a nonfiction book is doing on a romance blog?

And you guessed it, I’m here to explain. I wrote the content for “To Iraq and Back” while it as deployed in 2009.

I was learning to be a writer. I was learning to be an officer and it was my first time deploying into a combat zone. I was learning to be a mom deployed away from my kids. I wrote. Writing was my ‘me time’ then and it’s my ‘me time’ now.

To Iraq and Back” is obviously very personal to me. It’s not a comment on the war, it’s a commentary on how I dealt with the war and all that went with it. In it, you can see early iterations of my current published books.

JS in uniformI spent a lot of time with Shane & Jen from “Because of You” and with Evan & Claire from “Until There Was You“, too.

So in a way, it’s a look back on things that shaped me as a woman, a writer, as a soldier.

Some good, some not good. But all learning points that I grew from.

What’s really cool – at least I think – is that you can look at “To Iraq and Back” and see the development of my characters Shane & Jen as well as Laura & Trent. Shane & Jen first appeared in “Because of You“, the book that launched Random House’s first digital imprint Loveswept. They have a short story coming out on February 4th, too. It’s really funny how certain characters stick with you, you know?

(GIVEAWAY) Anyway, I hope you’ll check them out! I’m giving away copies of both “To Iraq and Back” and “Because of You” today! I hope you’ll check it out!

To IRaq and Back coverHere’s the blurb for “To Iraq and Back“:

My name is Jessica Scott. I am a soldier. I am a wife. I am a mother. there are many stories from the Iraq War but this one is mine. In 2009, Army second lieutenant Jessica Scott deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn.

It was a year of many firsts. This is the first person journey through a combat tour in Iraq, through being a woman in the army and learning to be an officer in the unforgiving environment of a brigade combat team.

This is the journey of a writer, learning to find her voice. This is the journey of a mother, confronting the emotions of leaving her children. This is the story of an inexperienced lieutenant, growing into a leader. This is the journey as it happened, without commentary.

This is her blog. There are many blogs from the Iraq war, but this one is hers.

Jessica Scott picAbout Jessica: Jessica Scott is a career army officer, mother of two daughters, three cats and three dogs, wife to a career NCO and wrangler of all things stuffed and fluffy. She is a terrible cook and even worse housekeeper, but she’s a pretty good shot with her assigned weapon and someone liked some of the stuff she wrote.

Somehow, her children are pretty well adjusted and her husband still loves her, despite burned water and a messy house. Oprah has called her. True story. Her debut novel “Because of You” launched Loveswept, the first Random House digital imprint.

She’s written for the New York Times At War Blog, PBS Point of View Regarding War, and IAVA. She deployed to Iraq in 2009 as part of OIF/New Dawn and is currently a company commander stationed at Fort Hood. Most recently, she’s been featured as one of Esquire Magazine’s Americans of the Year for 2012.

Beyond The Page: “Melting the Millionaire’s Heart” by Linda Morris

Jan 28

MTMH coverA snowstorm and a car accident lead to an unexpected meeting between a kindergarten teacher and the sexy stranger who rescues her from the cold in “Melting the Millionaire’s Heart“.

Linda Morris is on CABR today to tell us about her book, published under the Ever After line from Entangled Publishing. 😀

CABR: What inspired the story in “Melting the Millionaire’s Heart“?

LM: Thanks for having me, Sasha! It’s great to be here.                                        “Melting the Millionaire’s Heart” is basically a romantic comedy, but it has a serious backdrop.

The heroine, Kayla Johnston, is a teacher at a school for kids with special needs. My son has ADHD and does really well in a traditional public school, but I know lots of parents who aren’t so lucky. The story of a special school for special kids was inspired by the difficulty some parents have in finding a school where their kids can thrive.

CABR: Which scene was the most fun to write and which was the most difficult?

LM: The scene where the hero and hero, who are snowbound together on New Year’s Eve, are roasting hot dogs and marshmallows over a fireplace was probably the most fun. They do a lot of sexy bantering back and forth, and that’s my favorite thing to write. My editor, Heather Howland at Entangled, said she bought the book because of all the funny banter between the leads, which sent me over the moon!

LM picThe most difficult scene was the ending. Ay yi yi! I kept changing it, even after it had been sold to Entangled and we were on like the second or third round of edits. Readers will have to let me know whether I finally nailed it–I can’t tell!

CABR: Will you be doing any signings or appearances for this or upcoming books?

LM: Probably not in-person signings, but I’ll be doing an extensive blog tour and you can always shout out to me on Twitter (@LMorrisWriter).

CABR: What’s next for you in 2013?

LM: I have a contemporary romance called “By Hook or By Crook” coming out from The Wild Rose Press in April, and I’m working on another contemporary romance that I’ll be shopping around shortly, so stay tuned!

CABR: Enter the GIVEAWAY here>>a Rafflecopter giveaway<<

Mr Darcy

CABR: Which character from fiction, yours or another author’s, would you like to spend time with and why?

LM: Mr. Darcy, from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Why would I like to get naked, er, sorry, “spend time” with him? Because repression is sexy, that’s why!

CABR: I love Colin Firth as Mr Darcy! So glad to see you do as well 😀                      Coffee or Tea?

LM: Coffee, coffee, and coffee.

CABR: Dogs or Cats?

LM: I’m so a dog person, but my son has been lobbying me for a cat, which probably won’t happen because my husband and I are violently allergic. Unfortunately, we’ll probably have neither for the foreseeable future. We do have fish and two hermit crabs though, so there’s that.

MTMH coverCABR: Dog-wise there are some breeds with fur that doesn’t ‘set off’ your allergies. Bo in the White House for example 🙂   Beach or spa vacation?

LM: I have to go with spa here. I’m about five shades paler than Robert Pattinson in full Twilight makeup, so a beach is really a waste of time for me. Plus, a massage is pretty much the most relaxing thing I can think of.

CABR: Thanks for spending time at Caribbean Accent Book Reviews Linda.

LM: Thank you! It was my pleasure!

Beyond The Page: “His Need, Her Desire” by Malia Mallory

Jan 24

His Need Her Desire coverIt’s winter time in several countries so I thought we could discuss the heat of Hawaii and the heat generated between Tabitha Quinn and Marcus Granger in Malia Mallory‘s self-published book “His Need, Her Desire” (Dominating BDSM Billionaires Erotic Romance #1)

MM: First off, I’d like to thank Sasha for hosting me on Caribbean Accent Book Reviews today!

Sasha has asked me to answer a few questions about one of my newer releases – “His Need, Her Desire“. This is a contemporary romance with some light BDSM elements.

CABR: Malia what inspired you to write this book?

MM: Though writers cannot always “write what we know,” sometimes we do. I decided I wanted to set a story where I live. I’m lucky that I live in Hawaii and the setting just lends itself to romance. There is nothing like pristine beaches and gorgeous sunsets to create an atmosphere.

I also wanted to write about a heroine with a little spunk. She’s willing to try out some of Marcus’s activities, but she is in control. She’s not a doormat or maladjusted, she’s just someone willing to explore.

CABR: I like that about Tabitha 🙂 Tell us your favourite scene from the book. Was it easy to write?

MM: I think my favorite scene is the last. It was actually tough to work out. I don’t want to give away the end, but Tabitha has to make a decision as to whether to continue her relationship with Marcus or not.

She has to accept him – or not. She is swirling with emotions and trying to decide what to listen to – her head or her heart.

CABR: Will we see any of the supporting characters in books of their own? Or will Tabitha and Marcus make a cameo in an upcoming book?

Malia Mallory iconMM: This book is the first in a series called Dominating BDSM Billionaires. I’m working on the second book now. It’s entitled “His Desire, Her Surrender“. In the second book, Tabitha and Marcus are still the focus.

However, in book three, I’m planning to feature Marcus’s brother, who is a research scientist at the family company, Granger Pharma. He becomes involved with a colleague.

I also have a plan to have a book centering on Marcus’s sister. She’s involved with a man who is the son of her father’s rival. So, I have many plans in the works. Don’t even get me started on the stuff in the pipeline for The ABCs of Erotica series. 😀

CABR: Oooh! Looking forward to more about Marcus and his brother. 🙂

CABR: Paperbacks or eBooks?

His Need Her Desire coverMM: You know, I like both. I have so many full bookcases in my home that it can be a relief to be able to store in such a tiny space.

I also like the convenience of being able to read anywhere. Is there a long line at the post office? No problem, I just whip out my phone and read. I think each format has something to offer.

CABR: Surprises. Fun or anxiety-inducing?

MM: It depends! Sometimes a surprise is great and appreciated…sometimes not so much 😀

CABR: Pantser or planner when writing?

MM: I am a pantser trying to become more of a planner. I usually have a general idea and a sort of list outline to start. I am trying to flesh that out more so I can be efficient with my writing time.

CABR: If you could be someone else for a day, from any time in history, who would you be and why?

MM: Wow, what a tough question! There are so many possibilities from which to choose. How about Neil Armstrong walking on the moon? I’ve always been an astronomy fan and that would certainly be an incredible experience.

CABR: Very true! 🙂 Thanks for stopping by CABR today Malia.

His Need Her Desire coverSynopsis of “His Need, Her Desire“:

Tabitha Quinn didn’t come to Hawaii to be spanked. But when vacationing businessman Marcus Granger saves her from drowning, they begin an affair that moves from the beach to the bedroom and straight into an experience Tabitha’s never had before: dark-haired, blue-eyed Marcus is a dominant, and spanking is just the beginning. The sex is intense, the emotion even more so, until they both must decide if this is a holiday fling or the real thing.

Tabitha’s smile grew wide. She held out her hand. “Really, I can’t thank you enough for your help.”

He held her hand in a firm grasp a shade longer than necessary, but Tabitha didn’t mind. She enjoyed looking at him. Though he had probably shaved that morning, an attractive shadow highlighted his chin and strong jawline.

“I’m glad I was in the right place.”

Tabitha released his hand. “So, where’s your sister?”

“My sister? How did you know?”

Tabitha bit her lip. “I’m sorry to say that I eavesdropped a bit. I was sitting near you at dinner last evening.”

“Eavesdropping? That seems extremely naughty.”

Tabitha was caught off guard by the tone of his voice. He was teasing, and yet, there was a thread of authority running through his words. Tabitha tried to suppress a shiver. “Well, sometimes I just can’t help myself.”

Marcus appeared disarmed by her honesty. “Are you traveling with anyone?”

Tabitha gave him a playful look. “Why do you ask?”

Marcus smiled. “Because I’m interested in knowing the answer, of course.”

“Well, if you’re thinking about ditching my body at sea, I’ve got six family members waiting for me in my hotel room upstairs. If you’re thinking about asking me to dinner, there is no reason why you shouldn’t.” Tabitha amazed herself. Where is this coming from? This man brought something out in her. She’d bet those broad shoulders and sexy smile had enticed many a woman.

He laughed. “You have nothing to worry about. I never use force, unless of course, it is desired.”

“Oh?” The truth burst into her mind. It suddenly became clear that he was fishing around a bit. There had been several hints here and there, but it seemed like he might be looking for a certain sort of woman. No, he couldn’t be. I’m imagining things.

“It’s true. I would be pleased if you joined me for dinner this evening.”

Tabitha did a mental fist pump in her mind. Woohoo! Dinner with Gorgeous Guy. “What did you have in mind?”

“Would you be averse to allowing me to surprise you?”

Tabitha hesitated then plunged ahead. “Not at all. It’s clear you have excellent taste.”

Marcus raised an eyebrow. “What makes you say that?”

“Well, we both dined at the same restaurant last night, and I thought it was terrific.”

“Ah, well, my meal was less than pleasant unfortunately.” His tone indicated the subject was off-limits.

“Perhaps it was the company and not the food?”

Marcus laughed. “You are undoubtedly right and surprisingly honest.”

“My mother would say that my tongue is quicker than my brain.”

The corners of Marcus’s mouth lifted. “I’ve always been a fan of quick tongues.”

Beyond The Page: “Beneath the Skin” by Lauren Dane

Jan 23

Beneath The Skin coverFans of paranormal romance, today is your lucky day! Lauren Dane, author of “de La Vega Cats” series, is giving away an eBook of “BENEATH THE SKIN“. 😀

Enter the Rafflecopter here >>a Rafflecopter giveaway<<

CABR: Did the idea for Gibson and Mia’s story evolve from the previous “de La Vega Cats” books or did it ‘come to you’?

LD: I knew from the moment Gibson appeared on the page in “Trinity” that I wanted to write him a book, but I waited until the right idea came to me, which it did toward the end of writing “Revelation“.

I had the bare bones earlier on, I knew he needed a warrior like himself, but in her own way. I knew she needed to be strong enough to hold her own with a taciturn alpha male protector like Gibson, but also with her own wounds.

Beneath the Skin” refers to several things about this story. The shifter element, yes, but also the two different worlds on the outside yet very much the same underneath for both Gibson and Mia. Their families have this beef with one another, but they both love and respect family and jamboree.

CABR: Were you inspired by any songs or albums while writing BTS?

Lauren Dane picLD: Definitely. I have a tracklist with each book I write. A few of the songs I listened to a lot are Robin Thicke’s Lost Without U, Ladytron’s Predict the Day, Duffy’s Mercy and Eurythmics’ Here Comes The Rain Again.

CABR: I love that Eurythmics’ song! 😀                                                                      Tell us about your ‘aha’ moment? That plot twist that made everything come together.

LD: These days I contract books on proposal. A short synopsis and sometimes a few chapters. Most of the time the book isn’t quite what I imagined it would be in the synopsis stage. The book is organic in that the more I write, the more I understand the characters and their story brings me new details I didn’t know at the start.

This one was more about a subtle build up. One chapter built into another, and so on. It wasn’t so much that I had an aha moment (though I do have them in books all the time), but an okay so this makes sense to do toward the end thing.

CABR: I get that 🙂 Can you give us a hint about what’s coming in book 4 of “de La Vega Cats“?

LD: I really don’t know yet. I’m working on the last “Bound By Magick” book, which shares a world with the de La Vegas so the timeline will be altered. And then I need to write the next “Cascadia” book, which happens before “Beneath the Skin” – so there’s some tricky continuity stuff I need to deal with before I can get to what I think will be Armando’s book (in 2014 at the earliest, as my 2013 is packed)

FrangosCABR: Chocolate or fruits?

LD” Depends on my mood. I do love fruit (right now it’s orange/Satsuma season, which is a favorite. But I also have a box of dark chocolate Frangos in my living room. I tend to snack on fruit with protein (oranges and pistachios or almonds is a favorite) but when I need a treat, I grab a little bit of chocolate.

CABR: I love mint chocolate but did not know about Frango. Will have to try it 🙂 Coffee or tea?

LD: Both. Daily.

CABR: If you could be someone else for a day, from any time in history, who would you be and why?

LD: Hmm, that’s a difficult one because there are so many people I admire throughout history. Still historically significant women tended to have tortured or tragic lives (like Frida Kahlo for instance or Josephine Baker).

So perhaps Anna Pavlova, who was an incredible ballet dancer. She was revolutionary for her time. Changed ballet in ways we still see today. She did things her own way, which especially for that time were revolutionary. She was ballsy and talented.

Beneath The Skin coverCABR: What was the funniest fan reaction you’ve had?

LD: To be honest, every time I go to a conference or a signing and I get the “OMG you’re Lauren Dane!” reaction it’s so thrilling to me.

I remember the one were I was in an elevator and you know at conferences you tend to look chest level at people’s badges and that’s what was happening and we were all chit chatting and suddenly a woman standing across from me actually squealed, “You’re Lauren Dane!”

She grabbed my hands and jumped a little and giggled and it was lovely and awesome. Then she had to tell me she was upset at me for what Raven had done to Elise in “Coming Undone” (which is cool that people connect with my characters in such a way – thrilling to me)

CABR: LOL. That’s awesome Lauren. Thanks for stopping by CABR.

Beyond The Page: “Wildly” by Debra Kayn

Jan 22

Wildly coverDebra Kayn is visiting CABR today to tell us about her tale of love and tennis – “WILDLY“, published by Crimson Romance.

To celebrate the book’s January 21 release date, Debra is giving away an eBook copy to one lucky commentator. Be sure to enter the RAFFLECOPTER below the interview to win.

DK: Hi Sasha! Thanks so much for having me here today!

CABR: Hey Debra 😀 Great to have a Twitter friend stop by. 😀

How’d you come up with the idea for “Wildly“?

DK: Being a girl (haha!) I wanted to write a story about how we’ve all had crushes on an older boy or older man growing up. It’s almost a female ritual to at least have one case of the crush on a friend’s older brother, a teacher, a coach, the hot sexy bag boy at the local grocery store.

What can seem so innocent and harmless can quickly turn into an obsession where we quickly make fools of ourselves. We can’t talk, can’t breathe, and there might be some drooling going on…that’s how we girls work at the tender age of 12-13 years old when our hormones take over our bodies. I wanted to capture those fluttering sensations, those oh-my-God-I’m-going-to-die-if-he-looks-at-me moments and take it farther for my characters.

CABR: Did you have to spend time former Wimbledon champs to research the hero’s life in the tennis limelight? 😉

Debra Kayn picture

DK: I didn’t! I’m actually a tennis player. I started taking summer lessons when I was six years old and the same man who taught me how to play also was the high school tennis coach who continued coaching me until I was 18 years old.

Now, there was no crushing going on with him…he was happily married with kids around my age, but a player/coach relationship is pretty close. There’s mutual respect and a friendship that develops during all the practices and matches.

Also, when I hit junior high through high school I took lessons at a private club from tennis professionals, played tournaments, went on to district and state. So, it was natural that I would have a Wimbledon champ as my hero, because at one time Tennis was a very important part of my life.

CABR: That’s so cool Debra 🙂 Tell me, what’s your favourite moment in the book?

DK: The moment that Grayson first sets eyes on Shauna after she returned to Cottage Grove and was all grown up. Sigh…Poor Grayson. Good thing he’s in top shape, or he might’ve had a heart attack!

CABR: Are you a  panster or planner when writing?

DK: Both! All my stories come out as a panster, but while I’m writing I keep a document open to make sure I have a goal, motivation, and conflict in every scene. After I’m done with the story, it makes it much easier to see if I have any plot holes or I rushed the story.

CABR: Paperback or eBook?

DK: EBook! I love my Kindle and I read from it almost exclusively. Paperbacks are for my keeper shelf, though I rarely read a book twice, just for the simple fact I LOVE the feelings that are invoked in the first reading and don’t want to overthink the story. I do have to say that I’m extremely excited that Wildly will also come out in paperback too. I’m going to clear off a shelf for my book.

CABR: What’s next for you?

DK: I have so much going on. In March I have a category romance coming out called “Suite Cowboy” with Turquoise Morning Press. It’s probably the funniest book I’ve written, and I can’t wait for readers to let me know if I’m hilarious or lame when I do try and write with humor. Then in July, I have “Homemade Hijinks” releasing. Hopefully I’ll have more news to share soon, because I’ve got more manuscripts out in submission land.

CABR: Fingers crossed that all of your submissions get approved and published quickly 😀

Wildly coverSynopsis of “Wildly”:

Shauna Marino left Cottage Grove, California an innocent teenager, gangly, wild and with no fashion sense, always diving headfirst into whatever feelings ruled the moment.

Now, she’s back to fix her mistakes. She’s gained a respectable job, set a plan in motion to benefit the town, and all that’s left is to prove to Grayson Schyler she’s changed. Maybe this time, he won’t tell her no when she shows up naked and asks him to make her a woman.

Grayson Schyler, former Wimbledon champion, would’ve recognized Shauna anywhere. She’s made his life sweeter one moment, and hell the next. As someone in the public eye, he’d gone to great strains not to allow the media to misread their relationship, which wasn’t always easy when Shauna was around. Now she’s back, asking for his help, and all he can think about is if she came back to make him pay for what he’d done.

Beyond The Page: “The Reluctant Wife” by Bronwen Evans

Jan 21

The Reluctant Wife coverWelcome to Caribbean Accent Book Reviews, Bronwen Evans. It’s fun getting to know more about new-to-me authors like yourself.

Readers, Bronwen has included a GIVEAWAY that’s tied into the excerpt from “The Reluctant Wife“.

Once you’ve read the excerpt, post your answer to her question in the Comments section.

Bronwen, let’s get right into things. 😀

  • CABR: The Reluctant Wife” is definitely not a Regency romance. What led you to write a contemporary romance and is this your first?

BE: Hi Sasha – Waving from New Zealand. I have been to your part of the world once. I spent 3 weeks in Turks and Caicos which was heaven on earth!

The Reluctant Wife” is my first contemporary romance. I wrote the story because Dante and Abby popped into my head one afternoon when I was feeling a bit sorry for myself (part of the story I can relate to very well). Once there, they would not leave. It just seemed to be one of those stories I had to tell. A girl who married too young, a man who felt the weight of duty, and what happens when life throws you a curve ball.

I enjoyed writing a contemporary for a change. I think it will keep my historical romances fresher. I’m hoping there will be more contemporaries for me. I suppose it will depend on how this does. I’m working on another now called “The Nanny Trap“.

Natalie J. DamschroderCABR: That’s great news 🙂 D

  • escribe Taylor and her estranged husband Dante in 10 words each.

BE: Abby – contained, warm, friendly, strong, determined, loyal, beautiful, sexy, loveable, empathetic

Dante – handsome, witty, ruthless, stubborn, loyal, responsible, leader, arrogant, humble, loveable

  • Did you have a special song/s that you listened to while writing “The Reluctant Wife”?

BE: Yes – I played Keith Urban’s, Days Go By

CABR: I’ll have to check that out. So, w

  • hat are you working on this year?

BE: I’ve got loads on this year. I’m writing two Regency romances, one, “Invitation to Passion“, I’m self-publishing April 2013, and other is book two, “A Touch of Marriage“, book two in my Disgraced Lords series for my contract with Random House Loveswept. I’m hoping to publish one contemporary romance, “The Nanny Trap“, and three long Regency novellas to self-publish. I may not get all of the novellas finished but I’ll try….

CABR: Wow. Best of luck with all that Bronwen 🙂

The Reluctant Wife coverCABR:

  • Which character from fiction, yours or another author’s, would you like to spend time with and why?

BE: I spend time with my characters every day, and I can talk to them whenever I like, so, I’d probably want to meet another author’s characters.

Then I could delve deeper and ask more questions. The one I’d really like to grill and probably kick him up the backside is Mac Mackenzie from Jennifer Ashley’s “Lady Isabella’s Scandalous Marriage“. What was he thinking…

  • Coffee or Tea?

BE: Tea. Coffee is not good for anyone suffering from Endometriosis.

CABR: I did not know that. Good info.

Dogs or Cats?

BE: I’m a definite dog person but I get terrible hay fever so they have to be dogs with wool coats not fur, like a poodle.

CABR: Beach or spa vacation?

BE: Spa vacation. I love the water but prefer lakes, rivers or the best swimming pools. I can’t be dealing with all the sand…However; I would make an exception for the fine sandy white beaches of the Caribbean. We don’t have those in NZ, only coarse grey sand.

CABR: You’re welcome in my neck of the Caribbean anytime. 🙂

The Reluctant Wife coverExcerpt from “The Reluctant Wife“:

Abby took a step back. “No. I listened enough for the first twelve months of my marriage. Not this time. This time you listen. Don’t expect me to be a doormat. I came here thinking you’d do the decent thing and help me. I thought you’d do anything for your family. I thought, for old times’ sake, that vow might extend to me and my grandmother.”

Her words needled him until his temper rose.

“One favor deserves another. It’s not as if I’m asking for anything you did not stand in a church and vow to give me. Besides, having you back in my bed would be a pleasure—for us both.” Her face flooded with color at her words.

The corners of her lips turned down. “Sex. You’re all about sex. But not because you want me, but because you crave a child.”

“You’re wrong. You don’t understand. You think you know me, mio fiore, but you don’t.”

She raised her head high. “I’m pretty sure you no longer know me at all. I want and deserve more from a marriage. My answer is no. Categorically no. I’ll find another way to get the money.”

“You and I were married. You are still my wife.”

Abby’s eyes glittered with distaste. “Your problem, not mine. I have no intention of marrying again so I’m more than happy to wait the three years for a divorce. Screw your business deal. Isn’t the Lombardi Group big enough as it is? Why do you want more?” She looked at her watch. “It’s late. I’m tired. As it appears you haven’t changed one bit, I’ll take my leave.”

Abby turned and started toward the door.

Va bene. Do what you do so well—run away again, Abby.”

She hesitated with her hand on the door handle.

She threw a look over her shoulder. “Good-bye, Dante. Have a nice life. I’m sure you’ll have no problem replacing me. You’ve made it perfectly clear I am not, and never was, important to you.”

I hope you enjoy THE RELUCTANT WIFE. Feel free to email me and let me know.

Giveaway: Now, tell me what “Va bene” means in Italian and I’ll draw one lucky winner who’ll receive a copy of my May 2012 Regency historical, Invitation to Scandal, in book or eBook format.

Beyond The Page: “If You Believe In Me” by Natalie J. Damschroder

Jan 16

IYBIM cover

Natalie J. Damschroder is visiting Caribbean Accent Book Reviews today to talk about her novella from Entangled Publishing‘s Flirt line, “If You Believe In Me.”

CABR: Welcome Natalie 🙂

NJD: Thanks so much for having me! I really enjoy reading the reviews here. 🙂

CABR: Thanks! That means a lot.

I loved that Amber has such faith in Kale’s safe return from the war zone in “If You Believe In Me.” (Click on red works for BUY LINKS/Info)

How’d you come up with the idea for the plot? Do you know
someone who went through a similar experience?

NJD: I don’t. This was one of those ideas that leaped into my head. I was
invited to submit a Christmas novella, and I thought about the kinds of movies
that the Hallmark Channel does in December. Reunion romance! Military hero!
Small-town heroine! And he’s racing to get home to her, and she thinks he’s
dead! It really appealed to my inner romantic. 🙂

(GIVEAWAY. Complete this form>>a Rafflecopter giveaway <<)

CABR: How challenging was it to get into the h/H mindsets?

Natalie J. DamschroderNJD: Interestingly, I think it was easier to get into Kale’s head than Amber’s.
My editor has more insight into the life of a military family than I do,
and she helped me TONS on the revisions.

Amber’s superstitions came from
her, and I’m incredibly grateful to have her (my editor, that is) on my team.

She makes me better with every word she makes me rewrite. 🙂

CABR: Tell us about your favourite scene in the novella.

NJD: Boy, that’s hard. I have favourite bits in a lot of scenes. To pick an
entire scene, though, I’ll have to go with Kale’s first scene. He and his team
are moving in on a target, and he’s distracted by his frustration at not
being able to get home. His team members are named after some of my family
members who are in the military. My brother, who is active Army, and my
cousin, who was killed during Operation Iraqi Freedom. I won’t spoil things by
saying what happens, but it does complicate Kale’s goal quite a bit.

CABR: That was a truly nail-biting scene. At one point you’re not sure who might end up dead in the shoot out.

(GIVEAWAY. Complete this form>>a Rafflecopter giveaway <<)

Will we get to read more about Amber and Kale? Perhaps in a novel or as
supporting cast for another couple?

IYBIM coverNJD: No one knows this yet, but I do have an idea for a sequel featuring two of
the secondary characters in “If You Believe in Me“, and Amber and Kale would
of course have to appear in that!

CABR: Sweet! Looking forward to that. Hope it features Danny. 🙂

Is this your first published novel or first with Entangled Publishing? Tell us about ‘the call’.

NJD: I’ve had several books and novellas published with other publishers. This
is my second title with Entangled. It’s funny – I sold my first book in 1999,
but the sale of “Under the Moon” to Entangled was the first time I ever got
an actual phone call from the acquiring editor. Entangled was brand new.

They’d quickly rejected my first submission (though did say they’d like me to
revise and resubmit). I offered them a different story to consider, and two
days later, Liz Pelletier called me to make my first multi-book offer.
I’ve had a lot of great experiences with my publishers, but that was one of
the best. 🙂 I’m so lucky to be one of Entangled’s authors and look forward
to publishing many, many more things with them.

CABR: Chocolate or fruits?

NJD: Oh, man, no contest. Chocolate! LOL

CABR: Clothes and shoe shopping or perusing a book stores as a form of relaxation/fun?

NJD: OMG, please don’t make me go shoe shopping! Clothes shopping is slightly
(but only slightly) less torturous. I could spend a week in a book store, so
definitely that one. 🙂

CABR: OK, no more torture. 😉 Paperbacks or eBooks?

CABR: Both! Since I got my first e-reader a few years ago (a gift from my
husband), I’ve read more e-books because it’s SO easy to buy them. But I always
have print books as well, and go back and forth a lot. I actually find it
easier to get immersed in a print book than an e-book, though not as much as I
did when I first started.

CABR: I totally agree with you about the feel of a paperback and the joy of turning a physical page but eBooks are SO convenient, especially when ordering online or reviewing ARCs (Advanced Review Copy).

Thanks for stopping by Natalie and feel free to visit again when your next book
comes out. 🙂

NJD: Thanks again, Sasha!
