Beyond The Page: “Kissing Kendall” by Jennifer Shirk

Jan 14

Kissing Kendall picKissing Kendall” by Jennifer Shirk is today’s featured book, complete with a Giveaway of course. 😀

There’s also a fun quiz that includes a question for you. Post a comment with your answer for a chance to win an eBook copy of the book.

Here’s a little about “Kissing Kendall“:

“Kendall Grisbaum is finally taking charge of her life—pouring her heart into opening a new bakery business and even allowing her best friend Georgie to play matchmaker for her. Trouble is, the one guy she secretly wants is Georgie’s older brother, Brad, who is decidedly off limits.”

(Red words are BUY/more info links)

CABR: Welcome to my blog Jennifer 🙂

JS: Hi! Thanks so much for having me!

CABR: Tell us how you came up with the story behind “Kissing Kendall”.

JS: Well, a few years ago I wrote a book called “Georgie on His Mind”. Georgie was obviously my main character but she had a brother named Brad. I had a secondary storyline going with him having feelings for her friend Kendall but she was engaged to someone else.

Jennifer Shirk picI never thought it would go further than that until friends who read my book would come up to me and say “Kendall should have gotten together with Brad!” or “Are you going to write their story next?” I was writing an entirely different story at the time, so after I was done I felt I had to go back and give Brad his happily-ever-after.

CABR: Did you have to sacrifice and do a lot of hands-on research in bakeries? 😉

JS: Thank goodness for my waistline that was not the case! But I do have a friend who owns a bakery and I pumped her for lots of good information via the phone. Although I did experiment with recipes on my own to get into character. 😀

CABR: Which part of “Kissing Kendall” have readers told you they enjoyed the most?

JS: Most people love the sparring between Brad and his sister Georgie, which is frequently throughout the book. But probably a favorite with readers is Kendall and Brad’s first kiss.

CABR: Do you have a soundtrack while writing each book?

JS: NO! I need silence. But… there were certain songs I would like to listen to while brainstorming and outlining which reminded me of Brad and Kendall. One was “Just a Kiss” by Lady Antebellum and another was “Distance” by Christina Perri. They were perfect for them!

Pigeon Point beach picCABR: PC or MAC? PC.

JS: Actually several laptops. (I’m very hard on them)

CABR: Smartphone or tablet?

JS: Neither.  I still don’t have a Smartphone!!

CABR: Beach or winter getaway?

JS: BEACH! I need warmth and plenty of sunshine!

CABR: (Beach photo above is of Pigeon Point, Tobago. Click here for source)        Coffee or tea?

JS: Coffee. Although I’ve sucked the fun out of drinking it black and mixing it with an organic herbal decaf coffee blend. Yeah. I’m scary. 😉

CABR: Yes you are but in a good way 🙂

JS: Thanks so much for having me! This was a lot of fun!

CABR: Loved your enthusiasm about my quiz questions. 😀

Kissing Kendall picJS: I hope you all get to check out “KISSING KENDALL” and also my upcoming Valentine’s novella “A LITTLE BIT CUPID” released this month, which is guaranteed to be UBER FUN!

How about you guys? Am I the last person on earth NOT to have a smartphone? (please tell me no…)

“KISSING KENDALL” synopsis: “Kendall Grisbaum is finally taking charge of her life—pouring her heart into opening a new bakery business and even allowing her best friend Georgie to play matchmaker for her. Trouble is, the one guy she secretly wants is Georgie’s older brother, Brad, who is decidedly off limits.

Brad can’t seem to get his little sister’s best friend out of his mind. He and Kendall used to be close friends, too, and as a local policeman, Brad can’t help but play protector, looking out for Kendall. When he offers to help her renovate her new bakery space on the side, their friendship—and their attraction—flares back to life.

Amid the temptation of doughnut muffins and blueberry cobbler, a new temptation draws them both closer. Can they take a chance on love when it means risking their friendship, even when not doing so risks everything?”

Beyond The Page: “Stand-In Star” by Rachael Johns

Jan 8

Stand-In Star picRachael Johns‘ hero from “Stand-In Star“, Nate Devlin, is on CABR today.

He’s chatting with me about his journey to love with Holly McCartney under the close watch of his former paparazzi colleagues in Hollywood.

(Click on red works for Buy links/more info)

CABR: Hi Nate. Tell me about your take on relationships?

ND: Before I fell for Holly I thought – “Relationships are okay for other people but don’t really suit my lifestyle. I don’t work regular hours and I like my own space and company. I have good friends and one in particular who used to be a friend-with-benefits, if you get my drift but unfortunately I lost her recently. Between you and me, that’s left me pretty shaken, and I haven’t had much interaction with the opposite sex in a while!

Click here to enter the GIVEAWAY >>a Rafflecopter giveaway<<

CABR: Do you think Rachael presented you accurately in  “Stand-In Star“?

ND: Who? Oh, the author, right! Yeah… I guess she’s fairly spot on. When I read the book, I thought she made me a little grumpy from Holly’s POV but then again, I guess I was pissed off when I had to rescue Daisy’s sister. Eventually though, it was her freshness and naivity where Hollywood was concerned that made me realize Holly was different, special from the girls I usually hang out with.

CABR: That’s sweet 🙂 Which actor would best play you in the “Stand-In Star” movie?

Hugh Jackman picND: Geez. Hard to pick one when I know most of them personally. I’d say I’m a bit of a Hugh Jackman without the Aussie accent.

CABR: Sexy man. 🙂 Your family have clearly skewed the way you view life. If you could rewrite history would you choose a different upbringing?

ND: No way. My past might not be pretty but having a tough start in life has made me realize what’s important. I look out for my family and appreciate what I’ve got. I don’t speak much about my Dad but I’ll say this much – he taught me exactly what kind of man I DIDN’T want to be!!

CABR: Gotta respect that. As a child did you always want to become a paparazzi photographer?

ND: Hah! Negative. I don’t know any five year old who even knows about the paparazzi, well, unless their one of Brangelina’s brood. I wanted to be a super-hero. I used to love running around the house with my undies on the outside of my clothes, until my dad hit me on the back of the head and told me only poofs were dress-ups. After that I still wanted to be a super-hero but I dreamed of rescuing my mum and sisters from my father.

CABR: LOL – Brangelina’s brood. Aww, you’re sweetly protective at heart.

Click here to enter the GIVEAWAY >>a Rafflecopter giveaway<<

CABR: What was it like growing up in Hollywood?

ND: Not at all like most people would imagine. The world thinks Hollywood is glamouous, that everyone who lives there drives around in sports cars and lives in mansions. It ain’t the case. I reckon my childhood was much the same as any kid’s growing up in the bad end of town. I learnt very early to stick up for myself or run fast.

CABR: What’s your star/astrological sign?

ND: My what? Seriously, ask my sister Bec. She’s a fashion designer and she loves that kind of stuff but I can think of better ways to waste my time.

CABR: LOL. OK will do. Favourite food?

ND: Hot dogs. I even know how to make them appealing to a date!

Queenstown, NZ picCABR: Lastly, what’s your fave place to get away to with your leading lady?

ND: Queenstown, New Zealand. I’ve only been there once, but I reckon it’s heaven on earth. I’m thinking of buying a holiday house there. Or maybe I’ll just move there.

CABR: I see why. The photos on TouristDestinations.com are amazing.

Stand-In Star picSTAND IN STAR – January 7thst 2013, Carina Press

As an anthropologist, Holly McCartney is more comfortable in a museum than shopping on Rodeo Drive. She isn’t prepared for the media frenzy on her arrival in L.A. to accept a posthumous acting award for her late sister….or for her sister’s gorgeous friend Nate Devlin to come to her rescue. Though he resents her for some reason, she can’t fight their irresistible chemistry—especially when the paparazzi force her to stay at his mansion.

Photographer Nate only agrees to help Holly survive Hollywood for her sister’s sake, but she soon gets under his skin in a way no other woman has. The more time he spends with her, the more his attraction grows and he finds himself opening up to her in ways he never expected. Beyond The Page: “The Cat’s Meow” by Stacey Kennedy

Jan 4

The Cats Meow picSK: Thank you to Caribbean Accent Book Reviews for letting me stop by today and share my new release “The Cat’s Meow“, while chatting a little, too.

Today, Sasha sat me down and asked me some fun questions about my favorite things, so let’s get right to it!

(Red works are buy links/more info)

CABR: Which scene in “The Cat’s Meow” was the most fun to write?

SK: Ooh…hard question. Of course, the steamy scenes are always fun to write and the action scenes too, but I have to admit that my favorite scene had to be when Libby finds out Kale’s real identity. Now, I can’t go into that deeper, since I don’t want to spoil the story. All I can say is, that little twist in the story had hit at the time I wrote that chapter and even I was shocked. Which was slightly annoying, seeing that I had to go back and rewrite the book after to set up that part about sneaky Kale!

(There’s a GIVEAWAY too. Enter here >> a Rafflecopter giveaway <<)

CABR: Ooh. 🙂 Coffee or tea?

SK: I can’t live without coffee. In fact, I can’t write without coffee. I always have to have either a cup of plain old coffee, or a tasty treat from Starbucks, when I sit down to write a new chapter. Coffee and I just get along really well!

CABR: PC or Mac?

Stacey Kennedy pictureSK: Well, I’d so go Mac, because I think they look so pretty, but my hubs might throttle me. He’s a computer programmer and he wants me to stick with the PC, since we have programs for it. I imagine I’ll always be a PC kinda girl, especially if I want to avoid being glared at!

CABR: LOL. Tropical or Winter getaway?

SK: Both, I’d have to say. Before Christmas, I love all things winter. Spending a night in a cottage by the mountains and reading by the fireplace, sounds amazing to me. But after Christmas, I’m over winter. Since I’m Canadian and our winter stays for a long time, I’d love to go somewhere tropical in those late winter months. Guess it’s safe to say, I love best of both worlds!

CABR: Paranormal romance or contemporary for a relaxing read?

(There’s a GIVEAWAY too. Enter here >> a Rafflecopter giveaway <<)

SK: You know, I’ve always been a paranormal romance reader. I love Keri Arthur, Jeaniene Frost and Katie MacAlister, but lately I’ve been reading more romances that are contemporary. Though, if I read a romance without a magical element, it has to be smokin’ hot. If not, I get bored quickly. My favorite contemporary read lately was Reflected in You by Sylvia Day. I devoured that book and couldn’t put it down!

CABR: Great choices. My fave paranormal author is Nalini Singh.                         Chocolate or fruits?

Cadbury Flake picSK: I might have a little chocolate addiction. Okay, that’s a lie—I have a HUGE chocolate addiction. If I could eat it every day, as a meal, I would! My favorite chocolate is Cadbury Flake. If you haven’t tried one before, go get it now. Or maybe not, because then you’ll become addicted like me!

CABR: I’ve never had a Cadbury Flake, so you know I’m going to have to find a bar. 😀     Eggnog or Coffee liqueur?

SK: Honestly, I don’t understand Eggnog. It makes me cringe just looking at it. The smell of it, the thickness…gag! Nope, I can’t do it. And really, any liqueur sounds right up my alley. Mix it with coffee and yeah, I’d call that a winner.

CABR: Ham or turkey?

SK: It depends on the holiday. Easter would feel so strange without a ham and Christmas would feel weird without a turkey. I suppose my family traditions have stuck with me. And I suspect I’d feel just as peculiar if I ate ham or turkey on a day that wasn’t a holiday. It’s just not something I would make for a regular dinnertime meal.

CABR: Surprise or pre-ordered gifts?

The Cats Meow picSK: Surprise, definitely. I love surprises. Well, I kind of hate them, too. I have no patience…at all. But I really do love opening presents and being shocked by them, especially when it’s something sweet from my hubby and I get all gooey on the inside.

CABR: Panster or plot outliner?

SK: Deep down, I’m a panster all the way, but I’ve forced myself to outline longer novels, because it saves me time. Typically, when I pants my way through a book, I have major rewrites at the end to mesh it all together. So, I tend to do an outline of all the major plot stuff — such as big twists, key moments, and plot points — simply to know when things should happen. But, everything else comes to me when writing at that moment, which usually means my outline changes. Though, at least, that means little tweaks rather than huge rewrites. I tend to get a little grumpy when I have to do big rewrites!

The Cat’s Meow – Witch’s Brew Book One, Urban Fantasy Romance

Publisher: Entangled Publishing

ISBN: 9781622668571

Release date: December 13, 2012

Synopsis: A good witch always has a kick-ass back-up plan.

Libby is an Enchantress—a witch gifted by the Goddess to conjure spells. When a magical presence is detected around a recent string of feline slayings, Libby takes the case to uncover the reasons behind the odd deaths. Much to her displeasure, the coven also sends a sexy warlock, Kale, to assist her.

While having the muscle around proves to be useful, fighting the attraction between them is worse than a hex, especially considering Kale is keeping secrets. But soon, Libby has bigger problems than the elusive warlock when her spells turn up clues that point to something far more sinister than slaughtered cats.

Now Libby has landed herself in the midst of an uprising. She trusts no one and isn’t safe—not from the warlocks stirring up trouble. Not from the worrisome rebellion she can’t escape. And certainly not from Kale, who is weaving a very dangerous spell over her heart.

Beyond The Page: “Secret Santa Baby” by Robin Covington

Dec 21

Secret Santa Baby picIt’s the Friday before Christmas and the lovely Robin Covington is here to discuss her second book – “Secret Santa Baby” from Entangled Publishing.

CABR: Welcome back to Caribbean Accent Book Reviews Robin. 😀

RC: Thank you! It’s great to be back!

CABR: What’s your favourite scene in Secret Santa Baby and why?

RC: I think my favorite scene is when Nick serenades Tessa at the office holiday party. He’s conservative, reserved…he’s British. So, it is absolutely the one thing you would never expect him to do.  I loved writing that scene!

(Red text are Info/BUY Links)

CABR: I understand the game Secret Santa is big at your day job. Did any funny or odd gifts from that inspire one in “SSB”?

ENTER the GIVEAWAY here >>a Rafflecopter giveaway<<

RC: No – the big gifts at my office party are Snuggies (ugh), giftcards, and booze – pretty mundane stuff.  The gifts in SSB are more sentimental, romantic and personalized. Nick definitely put a lot of thought into what he gave to Tessa – they were all from the heart.

CABR: Aww – gifts from the heart. After hearing about Entangled Publishing’s call for short stories inspired by the song ‘Santa Baby’, did Nick or Tessa ‘pop’ into your head, demanding their story be told?

RCRC: Yes, they did.  I love the song and when I saw the call the Secret Santa game immediately jumped into my mind.

What if someone used the Secret Santa game to seduce the woman of his dreams by giving her the gifts in the song?

I knew that the hero , Nick, was someone who didn’t bend the rules normally, but for this he was going to go all out.

CABR: This is your first novella correct? Can we expect more from you in the coming months or are you back to work on ‘The Boys’ from the Southern series (“A Night of Southern Comfort“)?

ENTER the GIVEAWAY here >>a Rafflecopter giveaway<<

RC: Yes, it is.  I loved writing it and I think I will do more in the future. I’m tossing around some ideas about a series of novellas based around an exclusive boarding school. We’ll see . . .  I am finishing a super sexy story for the Brazen line at Entangled (the hero is an action movie star-swoon) and then I finish Teague’s story for the The Boys series.  His life is taking some unexpected turns . . . poor Teague.

CABR: I bet Teague’s story will be well worth the wait. 🙂 What’s your favourite part about Christmas/the holidays?

RC: My favorite part is the decorations at my house. I have three Christmas trees, garland and white lights everywhere. It looks like a Christmas fairyland in every room – so romantic too!

Secret Santa Baby picBlurb for Secret Santa Baby

Beyond The Page: “Holiday Sparks” by Taryn Elliott

Dec 20

Holiday Sparks coverTaryn Elliott is today’s guest here on Caribbean Accent Book Reviews.

In the spirit of giving, one lucky commentator will WIN an eBook copy of her latest novel, “Holiday Sparks“.

(Click on the red links for more info/BUY links)

CABR: “Holiday Sparks” (HS) is about a female scrooge and a male Christmas ‘elf’, complete with tattoos. What inspired you to write their story?

TE: I was very much a Darcy. I worked retail for a large portion of my life and man…can that make you hate Christmas! It’s hard to pay attention to the good in people when they act so freaking terrible just to get their shopping done. And man, they can be terrible.

Also, Darcy comes from a single parent household and never really got to experience a Christmas either. I wanted to use that aspect and to have her slowly see that Christmas can be amazing. Ben also comes from a single parent household, but he chooses to see the good in others and the hope in the season. He’s just one of those half-full guys. Solid and dependable, that’s Ben. And I wanted to show that kind of man could be sexy as hell.

Suspended picAs much as I like writing the kind of guy that’s angsty and troubled (See Shane in “Suspended“. Gah!) I really am in love with the nice guys when it comes to real life. And Ben is totally nice guy with a side of DELICIOUS.

Click here to enter the GIVEAWAY>> a Rafflecopter giveaway<<

CABR: Do you find writing novellas more fun or more of a challenge than full-length novels?

TE: CHALLENGE! I tend to write long actually. And it’s a real effort to get the novella thing down pat. Simplify, simplify, simplify! And my God, am I terrible at that. LOL “Holiday Sparks” is actually more category length. It was originally supposed to be a novella, but I just couldn’t hold myself back. Thankfully Ellora’s Cave is pretty open with wordcount.

CABR: Great news for us readers. 😀 Can we expect future Christmas novellas?

TE: Actually, yes. I really love writing them and personally…I love the covers. LOL I will be writing more I’m sure. I also think Christmas books are a good place to revisit favorite characters. So that’s always an option for me.

Holiday Sparks coverCABR: HS is being published by Ellora’s Cave. So how hot is it?

TE: It’s…well, it’s an EC book so you know it’s hot. These two really know how to burn up the stray pine needles on the floor. And there’s a particularly scorching scene right behind under the crazy Christmas tree at Blackstone’s Department store in the book. 😉

Click here to enter the GIVEAWAY>> a Rafflecopter giveaway<<

CABR: What’s next for you?

Well, I’ve got another holiday themed book coming out in February – “Suspended”. It’s a mashup of the winter holidays ending in Valentine’s Day. It’s a roadtrip book with two very unlikely people falling in love. It’s from Loose Id. And probably one of the sexiest books I’ve written. And also one of the most growly alpha-type characters I’ve written to date.

Shane is not an easy man to get to know, but once he falls for Kendall? Watch out—that man will not be denied.

Also, I’ll be working on Alaric and Mercy’s book from ASHES AND WINE. And Cari Quinn and I are working on a new project together that may or may not include rockstars. 😉

CABR: Woohoo :)

teCABR: Which character from fiction, yours or another author’s, would you like to spend time with and why?

TE: Because it’s Christmas and I just am so in love with Ben Hartley from “HOLIDAY SPARKS” — I’ll have to go with him. I lost my mom a few years ago now and she was the epitome of the Christmas spirit, so I’d love to see that come back into my life again and Ben would definitely provide. He loves his Christmas.

CABR: If you could be someone else for a day, from any time in history, who would you be and why?

TE: Hmm. Good question. Well, because I was thinking of my mom…that put me into Elvis mode. We totally loved to watch Elvis movies together. I’d love to be Ann Margaret when she got to play with Elvis for a day on the set on Viva Las Vegas. I’ve heard he was goofy and funny and just a total trip to be around.

Beyond The Page: “Triple Shot” by Ava Riley

Dec 19

Triple Shot coverAnother great author, another great Giveaway here at CABR. Today it’s my great pleasure to welcome Ava Riley to talk about her book, “Triple Shot“.(Readers, please click on red links for more info)

AR: I’d like to say a huge “thank you” to Caribbean Accent Book Reviews for having me today. It is a pleasure to be with you.

CABR: Aww. You’re welcome Ava 😀

Triple Shot” is an erotic romance and the cover has three men with surf boards on it but it’s not about a menage a trois. What’s behind the title and the book cover? 🙂

Here’s the GIVEAWAY link folks >> a Rafflecopter giveaway <<

AR: Triple Shot” is about Susan and Josiah who are friends with the main characters from “A Lifetime to Find Love” and “Sacred Surrender” – Cade, Rowan & Tessa.
The title comes from a situation that Josiah finds himself in while alone in a bar and the cover is because Josiah, Rowan, and Cade used to surf together when they attended medical school together.                                                  I can see how it would be mistaken as a ménage story, but it is about the ups and downs of the relationship between Susan and Josiah.

CABR: Triple Shot” is book 3 in a trilogy right? Tell us about the books and do we need to read them in order?

Ava Riley pictureAR: Yes, it is the 3 book. The books are all centered round life-long friends who find love when they least expect it. They do not need to be read in order, however, to have a better understanding of the relationships, it would be better to read them in order – “A Lifetime to Find Love” (Tessa and Cade), “Sacred Surrender” (Madison and Rowan), and “Triple Shot“.

Here’s the GIVEAWAY link folks >> a Rafflecopter giveaway <<

CABR: What was your favorite scene in TS and why?

AR: Wow! That’s a tough question! There are so many. I’d have to say when Josiah is giving Susan surfing “lessons,” it is both sexy and funny. Then the scene when their relationship finally reaches that point where they find themselves in bed with each other. But there are many more moments between them that I love.

CABR: Surfing “lessons” 😉 You recently released your inaugural paranormal erotica, “Leesea’s Books and Babbles“. Will you be alternating books or focusing on that for a while?

LB&B coverAR: I will be focusing on the paranormal for a while. I enjoy writing erotic, but enjoy paranormal also. The paranormal has erotic elements in it as well (maybe that’s why I love it also).

CABR: Which character from fiction, yours or another author’s, would you like to spend time with and why?

AR: Oy vey! Another tough question! Can I have more than one 😀 Yes, I’m a bad girl. I’m gonna pick from my own – Braeden from “Leesea’s Books and Babbles” and Grayson, who is from the book I’m working on right now. Both are vampires who are incredibly sexy and sweet, yet still badass!

CABR: Noice! 🙂

CABR: What inspired the plot behind “Model Soldier“?

CJ: The character of the hero in “Model Soldier” is what drove the plot. That hero, as well as the opening scene of the book, were inspired by an email I’d received from my Army consultant who was then an infantry platoon leader at a fire base in one of the border provinces in Afghanistan. I remember I’d read his email, which was very emotional because of the description and the way he’d written it, and then I had to leave to go somewhere.

Cat JohnsonSince I live an hour from anything, I had a long drive alone in the car and by the time I’d reached my destination, I had the character of Sgt David Hawk Hawkins, the opening chapter, and the beginnings of a plot in my mind and ready to be written.

CABR: How has “Model Soldier” been updated or re-worked since it was first released in 2008 by a now out-of-print publisher?

CJ: There were no major plot changes or additions during the re-working of this story, but there was a lot of polishing and refining. Not only has my writing changed a bit over the years, but style preferences change in publishing.

(Enter the Rafflecopter here>>a Rafflecopter giveaway<< to WIN an eBook of “Model Soldier”)

rhb picFor instance, now, it’s far less common to see dialogue tags (IE: she said, he said). Then, the book went through editing at Samhain, which includes copy edits by one editor, final line edits by another, then a final proofread, before it gets a fresh cover.

CABR: Which book in the Red, Hot & Blue series first used a soldier as a ‘model’ and does this feature in future books in the series?

CJ: Way back in about 2006, I was asked to be in an anthology of short holiday stories called “Heroes Unwrapped“, and I wrote the story of Spec Op BB Dalton from my then Task Force Zeta series with the defunct Linden Bay Romance.

I’d read an article on MSNBC about how the Navy SEALs were employing a marketing campaign that placed actual SEALs in triathlons and at other public events where they would find young, healthy men to recruit for special forces.

Model SoldierI was fascinated by this and immediately the plot for what was then titled Under the Covers (now titled BB DALTON) formed–a former underwear model turned Navy SEAL after 9/11, ordered by his commander to star in the military’s new special operative recruitment marketing campaign.

That multi-author anthology went out of print and now my short story, titled BB Dalton, is a free e-read available almost everywhere, including at my site. The links can be found at http://catjohnson.net/free-reads-2/ Please, go and download this free short story. It has a holiday theme, so it’s perfect for this time of year.

CABR: How does using members of the armed forces factor in to “Model Soldier“?

CJ: Well, putting my marketing hat on, I decided that if the recruitment campaign in BB’s story worked out for the Spec Ops, the military would of course repeat it for recruiting in the regular Army, and they’d need a soldier to star in it. That star, whether he likes it or not, ends up being Hawk.

bb picHow that happens, and how BB is involved, is pretty funny! You definitely do not have to read “BB Dalton” before “Model Soldier” to understand the plot or events, but I do think you’ll enjoy them both even better together. And hey, BB Dalton is free so why not!

(Enter the Rafflecopter here>>a Rafflecopter giveaway<< to WIN an eBook of “Model Soldier”)

CABR: Indeed. 😀 Who doesn’t love a good military romance novel? So what’s next from you, re-releases and new books?

CJ: Yes, and yes! I’m still slowly plodding my way through the re-releases of the out of print backlist. So next up from Samhain in the Red Hot & Blue series is A PRINCE AMONG MEN which features Sgt Ryan Pettit, who is Hawk’s Alpha team leader in Model Soldier. This releases in eBook in March 2013 and is already on pre-order for Kindle. http://catjohnson.net/books-2/a-prince-among-men/

cjThen, I’m really excited about the February 28th release of my first book with Kensington Brava. It’s already on pre-order and is the start of my new Oklahoma Nights series.

Book 1, One Night with a Cowboy, stars a former-champion, bull riding cowboy who is also active duty in the Army. When the editor at Kensington approached me last December saying they’d love to see a submission from me featuring either a cowboy or a military hero, I said, how about both?

Then the character of Tucker was born. I’m really excited about this one. So far there are 3 full-length novels and 2 novellas in the Oklahoma Nights series on the Kensington release schedule for 2013-14. http://catjohnson.net/books-2/one-night-with-a-cowboy-book-1/

Model SoldierCABR: If you could be someone else for a day, from any time in history, who would you be and why?CJ: This is a seriously difficult question to answer! Okay, let me think. Perhaps a member of the royalty, either past or present, just to feel what it would be like to be a queen or princess for a day. Though preferably one of the younger, more attractive ones, and not one who loses their head! LOL

CABR: Thanks again for stopping by CABR :) happy Cat.

CJ: Thank you for having me! I know I dumped a lot of info here, so please know that there is a SERIES READING ORDER page on my website, as well as a Book page and Coming Soon page so you can always refer to my site at CatJohnson.net for up-to-date info.                                                            (Click on all RED links in this interview for more info)

Beyond The Page: “Island Pursuits” by Heather Rodney-Diaz

Dec 17

Island Pursuits coverIt’s my great pleasure to welcome fellow ‘Trini’ Heather Rodney-Diaz to Caribbean Accent Book Reviews to talk about her debut novel “Island Pursuits.”

Enter the RAFFLECOPTER here >> a Rafflecopter giveaway << for your chance to WIN

CABR: What inspired the story in “Island Pursuits“?

HRD: First of all, thank you Sasha for having me on CABR. I’m extremely happy to be here today because I also have a Caribbean accent, lol! The story for “Island Pursuits” evolved from a newspaper article I read in one of the local dailies in my Caribbean twin-island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

It was such a tragic and disturbing event that really touched me. So I started asking myself “what if” there was a happy ending from all this tragedy? Hence, it developed in the form of a love story because this is the main reason why I love reading romance novels. The happy ending. So I started writing my own story because I felt like I just had to tell the world about Adrian and Cory’s remarkable love story.

Enter the RAFFLECOPTER here >> a Rafflecopter giveaway << for your chance to WIN

Heather R-D picCABR: What was your favourite scene in “Island Pursuits”? Is it similar to what readers said they liked most about the book?

HRD: Hmmmm, good question but my favourite scene would have to be my hero Adrian’s and heroine Cory’s first intimate scene with each other. From the moment these two met, sparks were flying everywhere. Their passion for each other was intense and they had a sizzling chemistry. They were both struggling internally to resist it but surely couldn’t.

They had such a fun time discovering each other in Adrian’s military office. Though they didn’t take it all the way, they both realized that once just wasn’t enough. Oh yes, a lot of readers definitely told me that they loved that scene too even though all the love scenes were pretty HOT!

TT flagCABR: Well now! ;D  “Island Pursuits” is set in your home country of Trinidad and Tobago, the most southerly islands in the Caribbean.

What was it like writing about T&T in a romance novel?

Enter the RAFFLECOPTER here >> a Rafflecopter giveaway << for your chance to WIN

HRD: OMG, it was just so wonderful to write about T&T, in my own words for an international audience. I was born, raised and still live here, so it really was a very special moment. I felt so proud, like a tourism ambassador.

I wanted to share this beautiful twin-island state with the world, the good and the bad, our culture and food and lifestyle, the weather, our world famous Carnival and our everyday life, along with the many places of interest so that readers would really want to come here and experience all of that after reading my book.

Caribbean mapYou see, although we may live on a Caribbean island, we still have the stresses of our daily jobs, the traffic during our work commute to contend with, the effects of crime and our love lives to deal with.

I honestly felt that these real-life aspects and issues of Caribbean life were missing from a lot of romance novels I had read that were set in the region. The Caribbean was mainly portrayed as a fantastical setting, as a get-away. So I think we really need more romance novels set here that reflect our lifestyle and what we can relate to and identify with.

CABR: This is your debut novel but was it your first to write? Tell us about your journey to becoming a published author? Congrats! 😀

Island Pursuits coverHRD: Thank you, Sasha. Yes, this was my very first novel I ever wrote also. I wrote it in 2009 in about two months time. Then I edited, and tweaked and changed and revised and submitted it, got a couple of rejection letters and did everything all over again. Then one day in March this year, I got an email from Writer’s Digest about submitting to Crimson Romance, a new imprint from Adams Media.

It sounded really simple. So I emailed my query and then I was asked to submit my manuscript and then a few days later I received an email from my editor Jennifer Lawler saying that they wanted to use “Island Pursuits” for Crimson’s Spicy line. And I was like spicy?????? But hell yeah!!!!!! And just like that, that was the day my life changed. Island Pursuits was released on June 4th, 2012 along with 24 other fabulous Crimson romance titles!

Enter the RAFFLECOPTER here >> a Rafflecopter giveaway << for your chance to WIN

CABR: What a cool story about pursuing your dreams. What’s next for you Heather?

HRDHRD: Well, I write part-time because I work full-time but I’m currently editing my second romance novel, as well as writing my third. They’re both set in Trinidad and Tobago also.

I’m hoping for my second to be published by mid 2013. So the plan is to keep writing, writing, writing and sharing my love stories from the Caribbean perspective.

CABR: If you could be someone else for a day, from any time in history, who would you be and why?

HRD: This is a hard one because I’m such a history buff. There are a couple of people I admire greatly. The likes of Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, John F. Kennedy, Fidel Castro but I’ll have to go with the most recent of them all, President Barrack Obama.

His first inauguration as U.S. President on January 20, 2009 in Washington D.C. This was such an historic occasion in itself, not only for America but for the world. So yeah, I would have definitely loved to be him for that entire day, taking the presidential oath in front of millions of people!

Island Pursuits coverCABR: Who wouldn’t want to be in President Obama’s shoes that day?! 🙂

Thanks for sharing your story Heather and I look forward to having you back on Caribbean Accent Book Reviews when your new books are released.

Beyond The Page & Giveaway: “The Billionaire’s Christmas Baby” by Victoria James

Dec 15

TBCB picChristmas is 10, yes 10, days away so it’s time to give out an early present – an eBook copy of Victoria James’ “The Billionaire’s Christmas Baby”.

CABR: The Billionaire’s Christmas Baby (TBCB) is your first published book but I know you’ve been writing for six years. Did Jackson and Hannah demand that their story be told first?

VJ: Yes! I’m a Christmas-junkie so it’s extra special to me that my first published book is a Christmas one. Jackson and Hannah are both characters that were so in need of a HEA, and what better time to make that happen than at Christmas? 😀

Enter the Rafflecopter GIVEAWAY here >> a Rafflecopter giveaway <<

CABR: Aww. 🙂   What’s your favourite moment or scene in “TBCB” and why?

Victoria JamesVJ: Hmmm…that’s a tough one because they were really intense but fun characters to write, but I think it’s when Hannah thanks Jackson, after their wedding.

I loved writing this scene because it evolved so naturally – she’s about to make a sarcastic comment in order to keep her distance from Jackson, but instead she is overcome by everything he has done for her.

Hannah thanks him and I think it’s a turning point for her – she’s finally letting him in. And of course Jackson is surprised by her candor…and well, one thing leads to another…;-)

Jackson's CabinCABR: Hehe   With book 1 of a trilogy about brothers due out from Entangled Publishing in March 2013, what’s your life like now, especially since Christmas is such a special time in your family?

VJ: Crazy!! Honestly, it’s so exciting, and half the time I half to pinch myself. I’m so grateful to be doing what I love each and every day and working with such talented people at Entangled.

Having the opportunity to connect with readers has also been an amazing experience. People have been so nice and giving. I almost cried when the first person signed up to my newsletter, LOL. I feel so blessed!

CABR: So cute. 🙂 Readers, the photos below of the actors, Christian Bale and Anne Hathaway, were the main inspirations for the ‘look’ of Jackson and Hannah in TBCB. Do they match what you pictured when reading TBCB?

Christian BaleTRIVIA

CABR: Which character from fiction, yours or another author’s, would you like to spend time with and why?

VJ: Hmm…well since it’s the holidays, I wouldn’t mind heading up to that remote cabin in “The Billionaire’s Christmas Baby” and having Christmas with Jackson, Hannah, baby Emily and the Sampsons!

Ann picI’m sure our kids would get along fine, while we grownups shared a glass or two of Jackson’s favourite scotch 😀

CABR: Thanks for stopping by Caribbean Accent Book Reviews (CABR) Victoria 🙂

VJ: Thank you so much for having me, Sasha!! Happy holidays 😀

CABR: Merry Christmas to you and yours Victoria 😀

A bit about The Billionaire’s Christmas Baby:

TBCB picJackson Pierce didn’t make his fortune entertaining every half-cocked idea, especially one involving diaper changes. Not even the cute brunette who links him to the baby in her arms can crack his icy heart.
A baby on the doorsteps is the least of Hannah Woods problems–she has to find the baby’s uncle, or the child will end up in foster care. She sleuths her way to the reclusive CEO’s doorstep only to find six feet of holiday sexy–and a door slammed in her face. But when Jackson comes around, and urges they marry for little Emily’s sake, Hannah finds herself falling for the jaded billionaire and wishing for a holiday miracle of their own…

Beyond The Page & Giveaway: “Baby It’s Cold Outside” anthology from Entangled Publishing

Dec 7

BICO picIt’s Christmas time and I’ve got a fantastic Giveaway for you all – a $10 Gift Card from Heidi Rice, author of “‘Tis The Season To Go Shopping“.

Heidi’s latest book is one of 4 novellas in the “Baby It’s Cold Outside” anthology from Entangled Publishing’s Indulgence line. 🙂

Make sure to fill out the Rafflecopter here >> a Rafflecopter giveaway << to WIN. Entries close very soon.

On to the interview…

CABR: Tell us about your novella in “Baby It’s Cold Outside“. What inspired
your story and how’d you come up with the title of your book – “‘Tis The Season To Go Shopping“?

HR: The idea to do four stories about snowed-in couples set over the Christmas and New Year season, and linked by a freak blizzard on America’s Eastern Seaboard, was a group effort between me and the three other fabulous authors in this anthology – namely Aimee Carson, Kate Hardy and Amy Andrews.

The title came from Amy who helped to inspire us with a wonderful version of the song by Lady Antebellum [http://youtu.be/iS6M6v7tmXQ] on YouTube. I came up with the idea of having my couple stranded in an empty department store on Fifth Avenue on Christmas Day, basically because I have this little fantasy of being able to go ‘shopping’ at a department store after hours and being able to take anything I want (sort of a grown-up version of the old ‘stuck-in-a-sweet-shop-overnight’ fantasy from childhood).

HeidiRiceAnd then I started to think, how that particular fantasy would be sooo much better if you were doing it in the company of a really hot guy – I mean, seriously? Fantasy sex plus fantasy shopping? It sounded like the ultimate Christmas wish come true scenario to me… Then uptight and very proper assistant marketing manager Kate Braithwaite (who’s working at the store on Christmas Day because she’s just been dumped by her boyfriend via email from London) and sexy bad boy photojournalist Ryder Sinclair (whose father owns the store and who’s there picking up a last-minute gift for his daughter after flying in from an assignment in Afghanistan) just seemed like the perfect pairing to heat up this particular fantasy sex/shopping scenario to fever pitch.

(Fill out the Rafflecopter here >> a Rafflecopter giveaway << to WIN.)

CABR: That’s a cool back story. 😀  What was it like being part of a 4-story anthology from Entangled?

HR: Really fun, and really exciting once I’d gotten to read the other three stories — which I think are all totally brilliant in their own unique way.

BICO picAll four of us love writing snappy dialogue, we all have a somewhat naughty sense of humour and we like to turn up the heat, but we also all have very distinctive voices and styles which gives this anthology a great diversity and depth. So brainstorming sessions turned out to be a total hoot…. (And I’m not even going to mention a certain picture of a certain Mr Antonio Banderas)

The fact that Liz Pelletier at Entangled was instantly enthusiastic about the idea when we pitched it to her was the icing on an already lush (and very fruity) Christmas cake.

CABR: Is this your first anthology?

HR: Yes, it’s my first anthology. And something I have to admit I’ve avoided in the past because frankly I was a little intimidated about having my stories in such close proximity to those of other authors – what if everyone thought my contribution was crap! (Yes, like all authors I’m a little insecure!)

But I have to say, because we were already friends – I know Kate well and I’d met both Amys at RWA conferences and we are all on several email loops together – it was remarkably easy to pop my cherry with these three (so to speak). Because I totally trusted them to write something amazing and to encourage me to write something amazing too! And to have fun while we did it. So frankly, a win-win all round. And I’d happily do it again now!

(Fill out the Rafflecopter here >> a Rafflecopter giveaway << to WIN.)

BICO antho picCABR: Fantastic! 🙂 Heidi, would you be so kind as to share an excerpt from your favourite scene in “‘Tis The Season To Go Shopping“?

HR: Ok, I have a couple of favourite scenes, but this is the moment when Kate disturbs Ryder after he’s just accidentally knocked over a display of Dolls.

Unfortunately for Kate she’s been forced to wear a rather tight Santa’s Little Helper outfit because her own clothes got drenched on the way to the store, and Ryder’s just spent two months in a war zone — so he ‘subdues’ her first and asks questions later. Kate is flat on her back on the floor, with Ryder on top of her and her hands held down above her head… But still trying to maintain her dignity.

(Fill out the Rafflecopter here >> a Rafflecopter giveaway << to WIN.)

EXCERPT from “‘Tis The Season To Go Shopping“:

“I’d like to put my arms down, if that’s all right with you,” she said through gritted teeth trying to twist her wrists out of his manacle-like grip—to absolutely no avail.

“No, it’s not all right,” he said, the tone annoyingly laconic as he tightened his grip. “First, I want to know who the hell you are?” That penetrating male gaze dipped to her cleavage again, and she cursed the midget-sized minidress she’d been forced to wear, and the prickle of response in her nipples.

“My name is Katherine Braithwaite,” she said, using her full name in the hope that it might intimidate him. “And I’m the assistant marketing manager at Sinclair’s.”

His eyes narrowed, but he finally released her wrists.

She crossed her freed arms over her unfortunate display of cleavage and pressed down on the traitorous nipples, hoping to heck he hadn’t noticed them sticking out like two sore thumbs. But instead of getting off her he settled back on his haunches, making muscular thighs flex on either side of her hips.

“Uh-huh. So what are you doing here on Christmas Day
 dressed as a leprechaun?”

Kate’s usual patience began to disintegrate at the amused tone. “I could ask you the same question,” she shot back, even though she knew perfectly well what he was doing here: stealing merchandise from a company that already paid him an exorbitant salary for doing bugger all. She wriggled furiously. “Now get off me, you big oaf,” she demanded, having had quite enough of being manhandled and interrogated.

She didn’t care if he was Lachlan Sinclair’s precious son, if the man tried to get her fired over this incident she would sue.

He didn’t budge. “I don’t see how you could ask me the same question,” he said as his gaze took another leisurely trip over her skimpy outfit. “I’m not dressed as a leprechaun.” His lips lifted in a mocking and disturbingly sexy grin.

Her heartbeat kicked up a notch—out of irritation, she decided. “This isn’t a leprechaun’s outfit, you moron. I’m supposed to be one of Santa’s Little Helpers,” she said, not even attempting to hold back the condescension this time. The stupid man had scared the life out of her, not to mention demolished six hours of work in a single second by knocking over the Festive Fun Palace of Christmas Dolls, and
he kept checking out her boobs. It was too much.

“Oh yeah?” His eyes crinkled at the corners, making it very clear he was having an absolute ball at her expense. “When did Santa start hiring lap dancers?”

That did it.

CABR: Now that you’re dying to read an excerpt from “Baby It’s Cold Outside“, click on the Rafflecopter here >> a Rafflecopter giveaway << to WIN. Remember, entries close very soon.
