Beyond The Page & Giveaway: “Fish out of Water” by Ros Baxter

May 7

FOOW cover.

Ros Baxter is in charge of CABR for the day, and she’s brought along  Rania Aqualina, the heroine in her latest novel, FISH OUT OF WATER.

Don’t forget to enter the eBook giveaway below 🙂

Interview with Rania Aqualina, Deputy Sheriff, Dirtwater, USA

Me: So, tell me, what’s a nice fish like you doing in the driest town on earth?

Rania: Well, you know, Ros, that’s a really good question.  You see, I’m not really like other mermaids. Mermaids don’t tend to wear nicotine patches.  And they don’t drink Southern Comfort from a hip flask, inhale twinkies or watch Dr Phil either.  Mermaids don’t usually pack heat.  And they definitely don’t get their hearts broken by tattooed guys who look like pirates.  In fact, mermaids have always been kinda down on pirates… but that’s another story.  The cardinal rule is this: mermaids don’t live in bone-dry frontier towns. Ever.

Me: But you do?

Rania: Yeah, although I’m still trying to work exactly how that happened.  Mom ran away from Aegira when she was young, but she’s always kinda tight-lipped about why.

Me: Tell us some more about Aegira.

Rania:  Sure, but make sure you don’t go mouthing off about it, ‘kay?  Humans have kind of a bad reputation with handling other species, y’know, especially ones that are kind of pacifist.  I really don’t want to end up in some test tube.

Me: Deal.

Rania: Okay, so Aegira is this ten thousand year old magical underwater kingdom.  It formed when the Norse God of the Boundless Seas, Aegir, got kind of pissed with humans and sank his island home to the bottom of the ocean floor.  He wasn’t a bad dude, really, so he bestowed on his people the gift of water-breathing and made his new nation, Aegira, into a kind of underwater refuge for peace and hope.

Me:  Well that all sounds pretty dandy.

Rania: Mmmm…yeah.  But there’s always a hitch, isn’t there?  A bad guy, you know.  This one was called Manos.  And he wanted one of Aegir’s nine daughters, the Billow Maidens.  They all turned him down and a great big war followed.

Me: Wow.  Is that why you don’ get home much?

Rania: Nah, not really.  It was a little more personal.  When I was sixteen I went to a Seer.  Kind of like a clairvoyant, you know?  A teenage thing, I guess.  And she told me I was going to die on my thirtieth birthday unless I could “change the course of destiny and save the world entire”.  But I just don’t like my chances.  I never even managed an A in math.  Only thing I’m really good at is being a cop.  I like to take care of people.

Me: You didn’t think about something easier? Nursing?

Rania: Nah, like I said before.  I’m not really like other mermaids.  My last moment of true moderation was back in kindergarten, when I stopped myself from using my awesome strength to rip Jamie Kennedy’s pecker off when he waved it at Julie Casey in the bathroom and made her cry.

Me: Wow, so it sounds like you’ve got a lot on your plate.  I guess there’s no time for romance with all that going on huh?

Rania: Well, you’d be surprised.  You see the weirdest thing happened recently.  Just when I was thinking maybe I’d been too hasty cooling things with my bad-boy solider-of-fortune ex, this smokin’ hot swimmer turns up in my shower.  And he’s naked.

Me: Oh.  Well good luck with that.

Rania: Thanks Ros.  Listen, I really gotta fly.  You can read the rest in Fish Out of Water!

Sasha: It’s GIVEAWAY time 🙂

FOOW coverBlurb:

“It’s  Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum meets Splash in a sexy, smart-talking debut about a mermaid in a desert, a city under water, and the secret that no-one is supposed to uncover.”

She’s scheduled to die on her thirtieth birthday – in three weeks – unless she can ‘change the course of destiny and save the world entire’. Throw in a Mom who’s the local Mayor and a Dad who’s been locked in the county jail for twelve years, and that’s all the trouble she needs without her mermaid roots coming back to haunt her.

Rania’s heading home to Aegira for a family wedding but she’s starting to have a sinking feeling that’s got nothing to do with hydroporting seven miles under the sea and everything to do with some weird connections that seem to be emerging between her, the dead blonde, her Mom’s shady past and a ten thousand year old prophesy.

Now if she can just steal a corpse, get a crazy Aegirian priest off her case, work out who the hell’s trying to kill her and stop sleeping with the fishes, she might be able to unravel the prophesy, the mystery of the missing choir girls and the secrets hidden in her Mom’s past. And maybe even save her own ass while she’s at it.

Fish out of Water is the first book in a trilogy about Aegira, an underwater kingdom based on the historical Norse legend of Aegir.

Ros writes fresh, funny, genre-busting fiction. She digs feisty heroines, good friends, quirky families, heroes to make you sigh and tingle, and a dash of fantasy from time to time.

She has been writing since she was eight and penned a whimsical series of short stories about a race of tiny people who lived on a rainbow. While they were a hit in the playground, a few things intervened – including a career in social policy and four noisy children.

Ros started writing again in earnest three years ago. In that time, she has secured a two-book deal with Harper Collins Australia, published Sister Pact (a romantic comedy co-written with her sister Ali) and Fish Out of Water (Escape Publishing on 1 April), been a contributing author to the e-anthology URL Love, and finaled in the STALI competition.

Ros also runs a successful business consulting to government and the private sector. She teaches professional writing skills and has authored a writing guide, Clarity.

Beyond The Page: “Fast Forward” by Juliet Madison

Mar 7

Are you a fan of “what-if” movies, or Charles Dickens’ classic novel, “A Christmas Carol”?

Then you are going to love today’s featured book – FAST FORWARD, written by Escape Publishing author, Juliet Madison. 😀

Read on to find the answer to the GIVEAWAY question.

Juliet_Madison picWhat inspired you to write the ‘time travel’ / ‘what if’ story featured in FAST FORWARD? (How would you categorise your book?)

I was reading a book one night which had a character who acted beyond her years, and I had the sudden idea of what it might be like if a character ‘looked’ beyond her years.

I was reminded of movies like 13 Going on 30 / Suddenly 30 and Big, but I thought it would be fun to have a character become an age she considers undesirable.

So I created a character who is a young model and made her become a fifty year old overnight. I thought time travel would be the best way to bring her to that age, so she could see what her life would be like in the future if she made different choices.

So it’s very much a ‘what-if’ scenario… What if I went to an event I hadn’t planned on attending? What if I said yes instead of no…that sort of thing.

FAST FORWARD is a bit of a mix of genres. It’s placed in the fantasy category in some online stores, obviously because of the time travel and futuristic element, but at its heart it’s a romantic comedy. It could also be classed as a time travel romance.

What’s the most surprising feedback you’ve gotten from readers about this story?

It’s been great to get reader feedback on this book, and one thing that’s surprised me is how many people have cried during it! I made sure that the book had an emotional element and covered some serious issues as well as the lighter ones.

But as the book is mostly a fun comedy I’ve been surprised by how it has affected people emotionally and how many people have resonated with Kelli’s self-perception and experience in the book. It’s nice to know it’s struck a chord with readers on a deeper level as well as made them laugh.

FAST FORWARD coverHas writing FAST FORWARD inspired you to make any changes in your own life/ your approach to situations?

Interesting question… if anything, it’s the changes I made in my life beforehand that led to me writing the book! My life had a big upheaval a few years ago and I decided to follow my passion for writing, and so I tend to include these ‘life-change’ elements in my writing now as I draw on my own experiences.

However, writing the book has reminded me that it’s important to make sure your life is fun, don’t get bogged down by life’s difficulties, and take time for the simple pleasures.

What’s next for you in 2013?

2013 is already becoming a very busy year!! I’ve just signed my second contract with Escape Publishing for another novel, THE JANUARY WISH, which will be out in December of this year.

I’ve completed a couple of novellas that I hope to get published, and I’m working on a contemporary romance and another full length romantic comedy to hopefully follow on from FAST FORWARD. Somewhere in all that I hope I find time to sleep. 😉

trufflesChocolate or fruits?

If we’re going on taste alone with no regard for nutrition, then chocolate of course!

eBooks or paperbacks?

I LOVE holding a paperback in my hand, but since I’ve recently got a Kindle I’m going to say ebooks!! I love the wider variety of books available and cheaper price of them, not to mention the ease of reading and carrying with you.

Favourite book you read in 2012/2013?

Geez that’s tough, I find it so hard to pick favourites as I’ve read a lot of great books, but if I had to choose I’d say JILTED by Rachael Johns (who just so happened to win the best contemporary romance award at this year’s Australian Romance Reader’s Awards!).

If you could meet anyone from history, living or dead, who would it be and why?

Another toughie! Can I be sneaky and say my future husband? I’m still waiting for the right one! 😉

Beyond The Page: “Bound By Her Ring” by Nicole Flockton

Feb 1

Bound By Her Ring coverIt’s my pleasure to welcome Escape Publishing author, Nicole Flockton, to my blog today. 😀

She’s her to tell us about her book “Bound By Her Ring“, which went on sale today.

CABR: Nicole, what inspired this story?

NF: I was hit with a scene of a gala event and a woman standing in the middle of the room surrounded by people but seeming to be all alone.

CABR: Did the hero or heroine come to you first?

NF:  Jasmine, my heroine, came first. As I said I had this impression she was all alone in a roomful of people and I immediately thought why? What happened to her? So I started writing and she started talking to me. Then, Luciano, turned up and well he just stood out and demanded I do things his way.

CABR: Let’s have some fun Nicole 🙂 Paperbacks or eBooks?

NF: Both!!

Nicole Flockton picCABR: Panster or planner when writing?

NF: Oh definitely a Panster but I’m trying to become a mixture of both.

CABR: Mac or PC?

NF: Well I have a PC but hubby is trying to convert me to Mac.

CABR: Both are cool. 🙂 Sugary or salty snacks?

NF: OOH I like both. But I think the sugary ones win out more than the salty ones.

CABR: Which character from fiction, yours or another author’s, would you like to spend time with and why?

NF: There was a firefighter trilogy, set in a place called Hidden Cove, written by Kathryn Shay back in 1999 and 2000. I’d love to talk to them. Their characters just jumped off the page to me. I want to know how many kids they have and how everyone is! 😀

CABR: Sounds good. I’ll have to check the series out. 🙂 What’s next for you in 2013?

NF: Well after this release I have a June release. That release is an off shoot from my first book “Masquerade“. This story features Dawn who had a major tragedy and closed herself off from the world, to a certain extent. Until a former high school sweetheart storms into her life again and is determined to make her smile and live again. I also want to try and get another book out towards the end of the year so I need to get writing.

Bound By Her Ring coverCABR: Wishing you all the best Nicole! 🙂

Synopsis of “Bound By Her Ring“:  Luciano Morelli has perfected a plan to get revenge on his runaway wife; confronting her at the opening gala for her father’s hotel. What he didn’t plan on was the flaring of emotions the moment he sees her again.

Jasmine Anderson has no memories of her husband. Her only link to him are the wedding rings she wears. Luciano storms back into her life announcing he is her husband, demanding she join him on a business trip or see her father’s livelihood crumble.

Passion reignites as they rediscover what first drew them together. But more than just memories are lost. Can their bond be rebuilt or will secrets infect their already shattered trust?
