4-Lime Review: “From the Ashes (Fire and Rain #1)” by Daisy Harris

Jun 16

From the Ashes cover

Review: FROM THE ASHES is yet another great read from Daisy Harris.

She has a deft touch when it comes to writing male/male romances, particularly ones featuring an ‘out’ hero and his ‘closeted’ love.

Jesse Smith first meets firefighter Tomas Perez at the scene of the fire which destroyed his apartment and left the 21-year-old university student homeless. When Jesse decides he can’t let the landlords’ dog, a big female bull mastiff named Chardonnay, be taken away to the pound, Tomas makes a snap decision to put his home address on the pound’s form.

And so begins the relationship between these two, as they come to grips with their mutual attraction and Tomas’ hidden sexuality. Things are made more interesting and difficult at times by the fact that Tomas lives in a converted garage on his parents’ property in the SeaTac area of Seattle.

Tomas is one of three children of a Latino couple who immigrated to the United States decades ago. His brother Diego seems homophobic, having slapped Tomas when he first attempted to ‘come out’ as a teenager, but younger sister Maria is cool with her brother’s sexuality. Whether or not his parents know remains a mystery…until a big fight erupts between Tomas and Diego in their driveway about two-thirds of the way through the book.

Jesse’s parents haven’t had any contact with him for several months. He left home after saving enough money over the past year to move to Seattle after his father declared he couldn’t be gay and live at home.

Living as an openly gay young man in Seattle, Jesse has a couple of co-workers at a small coffee shop who liven up any scene they’re in. Michael is surly but has good intentions while Henri is fun and flamboyant most of the time but serious when needed and truly helpful in Jesse’s time of need post-fire.

Tomas’ co-workers at the fire station are used to making jokes using homophobic slurs without necessarily meaning them that way. This was mostly ok with him before he entered a relationship with Jesse and began accepting he truly was gay, and not simply a guy who liked occasionally getting his d*ck sucked by a stranger in a nightclub.

Jesse and Tomas go through their ups and downs, adjusting to life together and eventually becoming comfortable openly expressing their love for each other in front of their families. They save the hot stuff for their apartment of course, and boy, are these two hot! 🙂

I’m looking forward to reading more in the Fire and Rain series. I’m sure you’ll enjoy From the Ashes too.

Title: From the Ashes

Series: Fire and Rain (book 1)

Author: Daisy Harris

Publisher: Samhain Publishing

Publication date: August 13, 2013

From the Ashes coverSynopsis: He wanted a boyfriend. What he got was a hero.

When an accident burns down Jesse’s apartment, he’s left broke and homeless, with a giant dog and a college schedule he can’t afford to maintain. And no family who’s willing to take him in.

Lucky for him, a sexy fireman offers him a place to stay. The drawback? The fireman’s big Latino family lives next door, and they don’t know their son is gay.

Tomas’s parents made their way in America with hard work and by accepting help when it was offered, so he won’t let Jesse drop out of school just so he can afford a place to live. Besides, Jesse’s the perfect roommate—funny, sweet and breathtakingly cute. He climbs into Tomas’s bed and tugs at his heart. Until Jesse starts pushing for more.

Their passion enflames their bodies but threatens to crush Tomas’s family. Tomas is willing to fight for Jesse, but after losing everything, Jesse isn’t sure he can bear to risk his one remaining possession—his heart.

Warning: Contains an angry older brother, judgmental best friends, a slobbering bull mastiff, and enough red-hot gay loving to make a porn star blush.

Beyond The Page & $40 Amazon GC Giveaway: “When Honey Got Married…” anthology. Interview with Anna Cleary

May 6

Anna Cleary has stopped by CABR to tell us about her novella EVE MET HER MATCH, part of the WHEN HONEY GOT MARRIED anthology from Entangled publishing

Hello, Sasha and lovely readers. It’s wonderful to be here!

It’s my pleasure to have you stop by Anna 🙂

What is the name of your novella in the anthology, WHEN HONEY GOT MARRIED…?

Mine is the story entitled “Eve Met her Match

My heroine, Eve is an old school friend of the bride, Honey, and once worked for Honey’s groom, Brent, as his assistant. Unfortunately, Eve fell in love with Brent, and was heartbroken when he announced his engagement to Honey. On the night of the wedding rehearsal dinner, Eve – who is something of an actress, and has even been described by some in Bellefleur as a “beautiful minx” – still has hopes of changing the situation and winning Brent for herself. After all, a marriage is not a marriage until the “I Do’s” have all been said, signed and sealed!

Naturally, Eve sashays into the party looking as sexy as sin in her crimson satin. Unfortunately, almost at once she encounters Brent’s devilishly handsome and sophisticated cousin, Rainer. He’s an experienced professional troubleshooter. He believes he recognises Trouble when she slinks through the door in the form of Eve, and thinks he knows exactly how to deal with the minx!
You had better read the story to find out what Rainer does!

Did you brainstorm the overall book with Kimberly Lang, Kelly Hunter and Ally Blake?

I did indeed brainstorm with my gorgeous, talented friends. The moment we decided on setting our wedding in Louisiana, there was this amazing explosion of ideas. They came so thick and fast we could hardly write them down fast enough to share with each other. Some of them were hilarious, and caused a certain amount of concern in our cultural guide, Miss Kimberly, who is the only bona fide Southern belle of the bunch. She had to rein us in quite a few times, saying ever so gently and politely, “That isn’t how we do things here!”
We had so many laughs. The four of us really clicked. We had so much fun, I think it shows in the stories.

Besides Kimberly, who was certainly our most invaluable source, the US has a magnificent body of literature, music, theatre and film portraying the stories of the South, making that rich and varied culture accessible even to three little Aussies on the other side of the world. So we had much to draw upon to assist our imaginations. Every Tennessee Williams play, movies like Steel Magnolias, Gone With the Wind, Sweet Home Alabama, Elmore Leonard’s marvellous books… True Blood…Justified…The list goes on!

How cool is that? 🙂

Did you struggle to put down words when it came to a particular scene in the book?

Anna Cleary picYou know, I don’t believe I did. Once I’d dreamed up my characters, Eve’s story just flowed from my fingers. I think the constant input and discussions with the other authors about the background settings, other characters in the town etc, kept our inspiration popping. Rainer, in fact, was so vivid to me I can still hear his voice and see his gray eyes glinting with amusement.

Excerpt from EVE MET HER MATCH:

He said softly, “So what went wrong?”

Her nerve jumped. “With what?”

“The kiss.”

“Nothing. I told you. We had to get up early and…”

“Did you give it all you’ve got?”

Unusually for her, she was rocked by a surge of anger. She hissed in a breath. “It was a perfectly normal kiss. It may surprise you to know this about someone in your family, Rainer Delacroix, but your cousin Brent is a nice guy.”

His brows shot up while his eyes danced with pure infuriating amusement. Then he shook his head solemnly. “Eve. How nice is a guy who kisses a woman and leaves her hanging?”

Did you find inspiration from particular songs/albums while writing?

Absolutely. There’s hardly a bathroom in the world that hasn’t rung to the plaintive strains of that beautiful lament, “Blue Bayou” at one time or another. As well, I’ve always been a jazz lover, I loooove the New Orleans heritage. Even some of my old Ellington favourites sprang to mind when Eve swished into my head and my heart.

Any future anthologies planned with Kimberly, Kelly and Ally?

Not at this point. We all have projects we’re involved in, but we had such a great time creating Bellefleur and its society, we’ve all declared we would just ADORE to sashay down that road again any old time! We’ll just have to see!

Favourite snack?

Toasted avocado and tomato sandwich–but you must lightly toast the bread first, then slather the avocado on both slices as thick as butter before you add the sliced tomato with salt and pepper. Delish! (I’m carefully not suggesting the addition of several generous slabs of Camembert, because that could become dangerously addictive. 🙂

Ideal getaway?

I live in a resort rich country, but my favourite would have to be Noosa on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. I think it’s the smell of the place–salty sea mixed with rainforest and the pervasive, aromatic scent of tea-tree. Of course I enjoy travelling further afield as well, though that doesn’t happen often enough!

If you could be someone from history for a day, living or dead, who would it be and why?

Oh, this is hard. Let’s see…

How about Queen Elizabeth I of England? I would step into her bejewelled royal shoes just for one day for the express purpose of halting the execution of her cousin, Mary of Scotland. I believe that was a tragic and terrible choice Liz was persuaded, pressured or tricked into making!

Thank you so much for having me here at Caribbean Accent Book Reviews, Sasha!  And I sincerely hope your readers enjoy Honey’s world as much as we enjoyed creating it!

Aww, you’re a sweetheart Anna 😀

Beyond The Page & Giveaway: “Battered Hearts” series by Kele Moon

Apr 4

Star Crossed coverKele Moon is on CABR today!

(Can you tell I’m excited? LOL)

Kele is here to tell us about her erotic contemporary romance series, BATTERED HEARTS, from Loose Id.

If you enjoy passionate romance filled with obstacles the h/H DO overcome, and featuring some seriously hot Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters, then this is the series for you. 🙂

TWO lucky visitors to CABR will each win a book in the series, so be sure to POST A COMMENT and complete the RAFFLECOPTER GIVEAWAY.

Using 120 characters or less (a la Twitter), tell us about your BATTERED HEARTS series.

The Battered Hearts books are about a group of MMA tough guys and the women who love them. Steamy. Emotional. Exciting.

How does that work? But then of course, after 5 fun tales of UFC fighters LOL! Then there will be Nova. . . Who doesn’t fit into a box and conforms to no one 😀

What inspired you to write these amazing, strong characters who’ve each suffered in their own way?

I like fighters. There’s something very compelling about men who go into a cage to get beat up every day and then come back asking for more.

I enjoy exploring what drives certain people to do and be certain things and the world of MMA was a wide open playing field for someone like me who loves tortured heroes 😀

Did you struggle to write a particular scene in book 1 or 2? Or would this question apply to Wyatt’s book, which is still a WIP?

Actually, the Romeo and Jules’s first date scene from STAR CROSSED was very difficult. I didn’t realize until I started writing it that I had never written a sex scene where the two characters had just met. . . All my stories up until that point had been friends to lovers stories in one way or another.

I thought I would NEVER finish that date/sex scene!! And funny enough I get a lot of positive feedback on it. . . LOL! Which is nice considering how much time I spent ripping my hair out over it.

Excerpt from STAR CROSSED:

She huffed indignantly as he pushed the door open. “I’m talking to you.”

“I heard you.”

“You genuinely disappointed me.” She sounded stricken as she followed behind him. “I thought you were different from the fellas I’m used to, but it turns out you’re the same and—” Romeo pushed the door closed behind her, and Jules turned when it clicked shut. “What’re you doing?”

Romeo stepped into her personal space and then leaned forward to breathe her in. The perfume she wore was dark and seductive rather than sweet and floral like most women wore. Jesus, this woman even smelled perfect.

When Romeo moved to kiss her, she turned her head petulantly. Her breathing was shallow, her body tense, but she obviously wasn’t inclined to give in—yet.

He bent down and whispered against the smooth line of her throat, “I didn’t pay for dinner to be a chauvinist. I did it because I enjoyed your company, and I felt like you were worth it. Is that so bad?”

Jules appeared unmoved by his impassioned plea. “You think you’re charming.”

“Sometimes,” Romeo admitted, a smile tugging at his lips. “But it’s still the truth. I wanna kiss you, Juliet. Look at me.”

“No.” Jules’s voice was a low rasp, sounding like the denial hurt. “Maybe this is a mistake. I thought about it while I was walking up here. This is all wrong and—”

She was going to be stubborn, so Romeo took the initiative and cupped her face in both his large hands. He forced her to turn to him and studied her stunning features for one breathless moment. Her body tightened defensively, but she didn’t fight him as only the sound of their labored breathing filled the air. Jules’s eyes were wide, her cheeks more flushed than ever. Then she licked her full, lush bottom lip in a quick swipe of anticipation.

That was all the invitation he needed.

Romeo leaned down and kissed her before she got a chance to think about things any more than she already had. Jules moaned in response and arched into him. Her lips parted to his, soft and hungry for more. Romeo knew he was already too far gone as he deepened the kiss and greedily took what she was offering.

Has the response to this series surprised you in any way?

It has! Pleasantly so . . . It was a series I started on a whim when I had an idea about a big, badass fighter and a piece of pie. LOL!

But it’s grown out into something I’m really excited to be writing. . . I especially love the spin on the mafia boys Chuito, Tino and Nova whose stories are going to make up the backend of the series!

Defying the Odds coverIf you were offered a TV or movie deal for BATTERED HEARTS, which would you choose? Who would play your characters?

I would probably choose TV just because I know how the story is going to unfold in the long run. . . Too much for movies. . . Though I wouldn’t mind see Star Crossed on the big screen.

I don’t usually have actual actors in mind when I write. . . But for this series I have found a few that match.

Clay looks a lot like Joe Manganiello in my mind, which is funny because he is Italian. I know a lot of people think of Romeo when they see him, but I dunno, that’s just how I always pictured Clay.

And hands down, Chris Hemsworth as Wyatt. I saw a picture of him once with short hair, wearing flannel and I was like. . . OMG! It’s Wyatt!!

Here’s some of the pics from that shoot. . . What’d you think? Wyatt?

Other than that. . . I’m still looking 😀 And I’m always open to suggestions!

Kele Moon pic

Pantser or plotter?

100% Pantser!

Dogs or cats?

I like both. . . I own neither. I have my hands full with three kids. LOL!

Chocolate or fruits?

Ideal getaway?

The beach!! Doesn’t even matter where. . . I grew up on an island. The ocean feeds my soul.

If you could meet anyone from history, living or dead, who would it it be and why?

It’s a three way tie between my favorite authors Pat Conroy, JK Rowling and Rick Riordan 😀

Thanks for stopping by Kele.  🙂

I thoroughly enjoyed interviewing you. Loved the actors you’ve selected to play the men and women in BATTERED HEARTS.

Hopefully we really do get to see your books brought to life one day 🙂

Review: “Defying The Odds” (Battered Hearts book 1) by Kele Moon

Mar 22

Defying the Odds cover

Review: Going into this book, I wondered how new-to-me author Kele Moon would handle the pairing of a woman who escaped a physically abusive marriage with a man who makes his living in Mixed Martial Arts fights.

My take? Well-done Kele, well-done. 🙂

There’s some old fashioned sweet romance and humour mixed in with lusty thoughts; from Melody Dylan and Clay “Powerhouse” Powers. We meet the pair in Hal’s Diner on Thanksgiving, when Clay is eating alone while Melody is on duty.

She may be near broke, having left her abusive husband with the clothes on her back several months ago, but Melody is a kind woman who wants to make the hot yet lonely guy smile on a day that’s all about family.

Too bad for Clay it’s pumpkin pie. He hates it and wants to “gag” but not wanting to hurt the feelings of “the attractive blonde” who’d just served him the pie, Clay focuses on “the warm feeling in his chest” and takes a small bite.

Aww. Clay’s a sweetheart underneath all those big, beefy muscles.

Just as he tries taking another bite; he’s loathe to hurt Melody’s feelings or waste her money since she’s paid for the pie, in walks the Sheriff of Garnet and Clay’s best friend, Wyatt Conner.

Through Wyatt, and later on his sister Jules, we get our first insight into what makes Clay ‘tick’.

“Did you just smile at the new waitress?”

…Clay scowled. “I ain’t sweet.”

“I heard you say both thank you and sorry in less than a minute. Not to mention those pearly whites you were flashing,” Wyatt argued, grin still wide and shrewd. “Forget pralines, I think ya wanna bite of Miss Dylan’s pie.”

…Broad shouldered, massive arms, Wyatt was one of the biggest, toughest men in Garnet, and that was saying something. The only guy who’d probably get better odds in a fight just happened to be sitting across from him.

“How ’bout I take a bite outta you,” Clay shot back in a low and vicious voice.”

“Nah, I don’t swing that way.” Wyatt took a long drink of his coffee, seeming undisturbed by the fury directed at him. “Thanks for asking, though.”

(I loved the camaraderie between these three and am looking forward to reading their stories in the rest of the BATTERED HEARTS series.)

Clay’s decision to accept a piece of pumpkin pie from Melody was the first step toward their unique HEA but the journey was not without bumps.

DEFYNG THE ODDS may be listed under erotic romance, and yes there are hot sex scenes, but Melody and Clay take their time working up toward a physical relationship.

This makes sense, given her past and his reluctance to scare her off because of his job as a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter.

Kele Moon doesn’t go into too much detail about the physical abuse Melody suffered in the past but you get a very good idea of what she suffered through something as simple, and chilling, as when Melody tells Clay she used to take lots of baths with an herbal remedy because it made bruises fade faster.

Clay wanted to go find her scumbag of an ex-husband, Justin, and beat him up. That’s one fight the UFC heavyweight champion would really enjoy wining.

Knowing her ex began stalking her after the divorce, you’re wondering if and when Justin will show up in Garnet.

There’s a scary moment that sends Melody running away from her budding relationship.

Clay is left baffled and hurt and it’s not until he has championship fight out of state that Melody realises running away won’t solve anything.

The specter of Justin the ex is still there but you’re lulled into thinking he just might not show up at all…when suddenly, Melody finds herself face-to-face with him.

This is a book with a HEA, so you know Melody survives Justin’s clutches but not without blood being shed by more than one person.
