Guest Post & Giveaway: “By Hook or By Crook” by Linda Morris

May 1

Linda Morris is in charge today, so pay close attention to what she’s written.

If you correctly answer the giveaway question, you could win an eBook copy of BY HOOK OR BY CROOK 🙂

Thanks for having me at Caribbean Accent Book Reviews today to share a little about my latest book how came to be published.

BY HOOK OR BY CROOK is a little bit different from a lot of romance I’ve read lately. While pitching it to an editor during a pitch session on Twitter, I made the mistake of calling it a romantic caper, to which the editor responded “nobody reads those anymore.” Then numerous other editors kindly jumped in to agree with her.

Luckily I eventually found an editor who felt differently and fell in love with the story. (So there’s my pro tip for this interview: If you’re describing your book to an agent or editor, don’t call it a caper. Even if it is one. Especially if it is one.)

But I love romantic crime capers. One of my favorite movies is Out of Sight, based on the Elmore Leonard novel of the same name. Jennifer Lopez and George Clooney light up the screen as the ultimate odd couple: a federal marshal and a bank robber fall in love, all set against the backdrop of a prison escape and jewelry heist.

BY HOOK OR BY CROOK is a little different. Ivy Smithson is a prissy heiress who never crosses her wealthy business father. She leaves that to her rebellious little sister, Daisy. At the beginning of the story, Daisy calls Ivy to announce that she’s eloping to Vegas to marry the MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fighter she’s been dating only a few months.

Ivy thinks it’s a disaster: She’s been used for her money and doesn’t want the same thing to happen to her little sister. She confides in their overbearing father, who comes up with an idea. He’ll send Joe Dunham, his oh-so-sexy security consultant, to Vegas with Ivy to stop the wedding before it can happen. Joe thinks Ivy is nuts. Who is she to stop her little sister form marrying the man he loves? But he never argues with a paying client (well, not much anyway), so he goes along. But something goes amiss.

When they arrive in Vegas, Daisy’s fiancee has abruptly dropped out of the big MMA bout he was to fight in. He and Daisy are nowhere to be found. Joe and Ivy know they never would have let this opportunity for his MMA career get away, so something must be wrong. They set off to find them.

I won’t giveaway too much, but let’s say that gangsters, a sketch by the German artist Albrecht Durer, and Lake Tahoe all come into play. Ivy wants to stop her sister from ending up with the wrong man, but when Joe and Ivy are forced to spend time together, she finds herself falling for an inappropriate man of her very own!

BLURB: Heiress Ivy Smithson is determined to keep her flaky sister from making the worst mistake of her life: marrying the wrong man. Clearly, the guy is just after the family’s money.

To stop her, Ivy teams up with her father’s gorgeous, wisecracking, and supremely difficult security consultant, ex-cop Joe Dunham. Ivy’s way too uptight to be his style, but she’s had his attention from the first — maybe because Joe always pays attention where women are concerned.

Bickering all the way, off they go on a mission to Vegas to track down Ivy’s sister and stop the wedding.

When Ivy and Joe anger the wrong people, their lives get dangerous, but guns and gangsters aren’t the only threat they face. Ivy knows Joe isn’t her type, so why does falling for the wrong guy feel very, very right?

Beyond The Page & Giveaway: “Battered Hearts” series by Kele Moon

Apr 4

Star Crossed coverKele Moon is on CABR today!

(Can you tell I’m excited? LOL)

Kele is here to tell us about her erotic contemporary romance series, BATTERED HEARTS, from Loose Id.

If you enjoy passionate romance filled with obstacles the h/H DO overcome, and featuring some seriously hot Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters, then this is the series for you. 🙂

TWO lucky visitors to CABR will each win a book in the series, so be sure to POST A COMMENT and complete the RAFFLECOPTER GIVEAWAY.

Using 120 characters or less (a la Twitter), tell us about your BATTERED HEARTS series.

The Battered Hearts books are about a group of MMA tough guys and the women who love them. Steamy. Emotional. Exciting.

How does that work? But then of course, after 5 fun tales of UFC fighters LOL! Then there will be Nova. . . Who doesn’t fit into a box and conforms to no one 😀

What inspired you to write these amazing, strong characters who’ve each suffered in their own way?

I like fighters. There’s something very compelling about men who go into a cage to get beat up every day and then come back asking for more.

I enjoy exploring what drives certain people to do and be certain things and the world of MMA was a wide open playing field for someone like me who loves tortured heroes 😀

Did you struggle to write a particular scene in book 1 or 2? Or would this question apply to Wyatt’s book, which is still a WIP?

Actually, the Romeo and Jules’s first date scene from STAR CROSSED was very difficult. I didn’t realize until I started writing it that I had never written a sex scene where the two characters had just met. . . All my stories up until that point had been friends to lovers stories in one way or another.

I thought I would NEVER finish that date/sex scene!! And funny enough I get a lot of positive feedback on it. . . LOL! Which is nice considering how much time I spent ripping my hair out over it.

Excerpt from STAR CROSSED:

She huffed indignantly as he pushed the door open. “I’m talking to you.”

“I heard you.”

“You genuinely disappointed me.” She sounded stricken as she followed behind him. “I thought you were different from the fellas I’m used to, but it turns out you’re the same and—” Romeo pushed the door closed behind her, and Jules turned when it clicked shut. “What’re you doing?”

Romeo stepped into her personal space and then leaned forward to breathe her in. The perfume she wore was dark and seductive rather than sweet and floral like most women wore. Jesus, this woman even smelled perfect.

When Romeo moved to kiss her, she turned her head petulantly. Her breathing was shallow, her body tense, but she obviously wasn’t inclined to give in—yet.

He bent down and whispered against the smooth line of her throat, “I didn’t pay for dinner to be a chauvinist. I did it because I enjoyed your company, and I felt like you were worth it. Is that so bad?”

Jules appeared unmoved by his impassioned plea. “You think you’re charming.”

“Sometimes,” Romeo admitted, a smile tugging at his lips. “But it’s still the truth. I wanna kiss you, Juliet. Look at me.”

“No.” Jules’s voice was a low rasp, sounding like the denial hurt. “Maybe this is a mistake. I thought about it while I was walking up here. This is all wrong and—”

She was going to be stubborn, so Romeo took the initiative and cupped her face in both his large hands. He forced her to turn to him and studied her stunning features for one breathless moment. Her body tightened defensively, but she didn’t fight him as only the sound of their labored breathing filled the air. Jules’s eyes were wide, her cheeks more flushed than ever. Then she licked her full, lush bottom lip in a quick swipe of anticipation.

That was all the invitation he needed.

Romeo leaned down and kissed her before she got a chance to think about things any more than she already had. Jules moaned in response and arched into him. Her lips parted to his, soft and hungry for more. Romeo knew he was already too far gone as he deepened the kiss and greedily took what she was offering.

Has the response to this series surprised you in any way?

It has! Pleasantly so . . . It was a series I started on a whim when I had an idea about a big, badass fighter and a piece of pie. LOL!

But it’s grown out into something I’m really excited to be writing. . . I especially love the spin on the mafia boys Chuito, Tino and Nova whose stories are going to make up the backend of the series!

Defying the Odds coverIf you were offered a TV or movie deal for BATTERED HEARTS, which would you choose? Who would play your characters?

I would probably choose TV just because I know how the story is going to unfold in the long run. . . Too much for movies. . . Though I wouldn’t mind see Star Crossed on the big screen.

I don’t usually have actual actors in mind when I write. . . But for this series I have found a few that match.

Clay looks a lot like Joe Manganiello in my mind, which is funny because he is Italian. I know a lot of people think of Romeo when they see him, but I dunno, that’s just how I always pictured Clay.

And hands down, Chris Hemsworth as Wyatt. I saw a picture of him once with short hair, wearing flannel and I was like. . . OMG! It’s Wyatt!!

Here’s some of the pics from that shoot. . . What’d you think? Wyatt?

Other than that. . . I’m still looking 😀 And I’m always open to suggestions!

Kele Moon pic

Pantser or plotter?

100% Pantser!

Dogs or cats?

I like both. . . I own neither. I have my hands full with three kids. LOL!

Chocolate or fruits?

Ideal getaway?

The beach!! Doesn’t even matter where. . . I grew up on an island. The ocean feeds my soul.

If you could meet anyone from history, living or dead, who would it it be and why?

It’s a three way tie between my favorite authors Pat Conroy, JK Rowling and Rick Riordan 😀

Thanks for stopping by Kele.  🙂

I thoroughly enjoyed interviewing you. Loved the actors you’ve selected to play the men and women in BATTERED HEARTS.

Hopefully we really do get to see your books brought to life one day 🙂

Review: “Defying The Odds” (Battered Hearts book 1) by Kele Moon

Mar 22

Defying the Odds cover

Review: Going into this book, I wondered how new-to-me author Kele Moon would handle the pairing of a woman who escaped a physically abusive marriage with a man who makes his living in Mixed Martial Arts fights.

My take? Well-done Kele, well-done. 🙂

There’s some old fashioned sweet romance and humour mixed in with lusty thoughts; from Melody Dylan and Clay “Powerhouse” Powers. We meet the pair in Hal’s Diner on Thanksgiving, when Clay is eating alone while Melody is on duty.

She may be near broke, having left her abusive husband with the clothes on her back several months ago, but Melody is a kind woman who wants to make the hot yet lonely guy smile on a day that’s all about family.

Too bad for Clay it’s pumpkin pie. He hates it and wants to “gag” but not wanting to hurt the feelings of “the attractive blonde” who’d just served him the pie, Clay focuses on “the warm feeling in his chest” and takes a small bite.

Aww. Clay’s a sweetheart underneath all those big, beefy muscles.

Just as he tries taking another bite; he’s loathe to hurt Melody’s feelings or waste her money since she’s paid for the pie, in walks the Sheriff of Garnet and Clay’s best friend, Wyatt Conner.

Through Wyatt, and later on his sister Jules, we get our first insight into what makes Clay ‘tick’.

“Did you just smile at the new waitress?”

…Clay scowled. “I ain’t sweet.”

“I heard you say both thank you and sorry in less than a minute. Not to mention those pearly whites you were flashing,” Wyatt argued, grin still wide and shrewd. “Forget pralines, I think ya wanna bite of Miss Dylan’s pie.”

…Broad shouldered, massive arms, Wyatt was one of the biggest, toughest men in Garnet, and that was saying something. The only guy who’d probably get better odds in a fight just happened to be sitting across from him.

“How ’bout I take a bite outta you,” Clay shot back in a low and vicious voice.”

“Nah, I don’t swing that way.” Wyatt took a long drink of his coffee, seeming undisturbed by the fury directed at him. “Thanks for asking, though.”

(I loved the camaraderie between these three and am looking forward to reading their stories in the rest of the BATTERED HEARTS series.)

Clay’s decision to accept a piece of pumpkin pie from Melody was the first step toward their unique HEA but the journey was not without bumps.

DEFYNG THE ODDS may be listed under erotic romance, and yes there are hot sex scenes, but Melody and Clay take their time working up toward a physical relationship.

This makes sense, given her past and his reluctance to scare her off because of his job as a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter.

Kele Moon doesn’t go into too much detail about the physical abuse Melody suffered in the past but you get a very good idea of what she suffered through something as simple, and chilling, as when Melody tells Clay she used to take lots of baths with an herbal remedy because it made bruises fade faster.

Clay wanted to go find her scumbag of an ex-husband, Justin, and beat him up. That’s one fight the UFC heavyweight champion would really enjoy wining.

Knowing her ex began stalking her after the divorce, you’re wondering if and when Justin will show up in Garnet.

There’s a scary moment that sends Melody running away from her budding relationship.

Clay is left baffled and hurt and it’s not until he has championship fight out of state that Melody realises running away won’t solve anything.

The specter of Justin the ex is still there but you’re lulled into thinking he just might not show up at all…when suddenly, Melody finds herself face-to-face with him.

This is a book with a HEA, so you know Melody survives Justin’s clutches but not without blood being shed by more than one person.

Synopsis: A woman running from an abusive past. A famous UFC heavyweight fighter who relies on his fists for a living. A slice of pie on Thanksgiving brings these two unlikely lovers together.

People in his hometown keep their distance and Clay is fine with that. Everything changes when a new waitress at the local diner buys him a piece of pie on Thanksgiving. Touched by the gesture when it’s obvious she can barely afford to survive, her warm smile and lush body churn up powerful feelings that leave Clay wanting more from her than pie.

Melody is running from her past and the small, country town of Garnet is the perfect hiding place. With an ex-husband after her and scars from her abusive marriage etched deep, the last thing she expects is to fall for a man who makes a living with his fists, but she can’t resist Clay or the tender connection they share.

Beyond The Page: “Reunited” by Sabrina Sol

Mar 14

Reunited300x450What are the odds of hosting back-to-back Vegas book interviews?

That must mean your chances of winning these cool eBook giveaways on CABR 😀

Today debut author, Sabrina Sol, answers my quiz questions.

Find out why she deliberately made the heroine of REUNITED a “sexy Latina” then post your answer in the rafflecopter to win a copy of this spicy, sexy novella.

Using 120 characters or less (a la Twitter), tell us about REUNITED.

Former geek creates new sexy persona in order to spend one night with the one man she’s always wanted.

But will her lie destroy their reunion?

This novella was your debut but it’s part of the 1 NIGHT STAND series from Decadent Publishing right?

How did your book fit into the series or is this book 1 in your very own series 1 NIGHT STAND?

Right now this is a stand-alone title for the 1Night Stand series. It takes place in Las Vegas – one of the more popular locations for the series – and there’s a cameo by resort owner Jackson Castillo, who was featured in the series’ very first book “TO FEEL AGAIN”.

A couple of people have mentioned that they would like to see the character of Tommy, Magdelena’s best friend, get his own story. I’ll have to think a little bit more about that one. 😉

Several readers and reviewers have praised the fact that a Latina heroine is featured in REUNITED. Was this a deliberate decision, based on your own Latino heritage?

Yes, this was a very deliberate decision on my part. In fact, my goal as an author is to include Latina heroines in all of my stories because I believe that there is a need for more strong and sexy Latina characters in romance novels, especially erotic romance.

las vegas signWhat was your favourite/most difficult scene to write? Please include an excerpt from it.

One of my favorite scenes takes place toward the beginning of the book. Magdelena, the heroine, is having second thoughts about her 1Night Stand date with her unrequited crush from high school. Her best friend Tommy is there to talk her through it and basically push her through that hotel room door.

It’s a favorite scene because the humor within the dialogue shows her vulnerability, while also capturing a telling example of the kind of friendship they share.

Magdelena cowered in a corner near the elevator doors and whispered into her phone. “I can’t do it, Tommy.”

“Yes, you can.”

“What if he recognizes me and walks out?” She cringed even more at that humiliating thought.

“He’s not going to recognize you. He hasn’t seen you in person since your high school graduation, and your profile picture on the alumni website is your fat cat, Gatito. Besides, you’re not you right now. You’re smoking hot Elena—his Latina fantasy lover.”

She closed her eyes and vocalized her worst fear. “What if the sex is bad?”

Tommy hooted on the other end. “Trust me. I’ve been working side by side with Will for months. This guy is bursting at the seams to get off. Any sex will be good sex for him.”

“Gee, thanks.”

“You know what I mean. Besides, remember when you reconnected with him on the website two years ago?”

“Of course, I do.”

“Exactly. And after just a couple of those steamy online chats, he wanted to hook up with you on the night of your class reunion. You’re the science chica—don’t you know what chemistry is?”

“Different time, different circumstances. Besides, we both know how that turned out.”

“Whatever. There aren’t going to be any ex-girlfriends or ex-wives in that hotel room. It’s all you.”

“That’s the problem.” She imagined Tommy’s signature eye roll and waited for his usual lecture. He always did it when she questioned herself.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. You owe this to yourself. Hell, girl, you owe this to me for working so damn hard to get him there. So get your ass in that room right now and make him scream your name so I can hear it all the way over here in L.A.

What’s next for you in 2013?

My next appearance is coming up this weekend! I’ll be participating in the multi-author book signing at the SoCal RWA conference on Sunday, March 17 in Santa Ana, Calif. Since REUNITED is an e-book only, I’ll be signing book cards and giving away some fun swag items!

Here’s a link for more info: http://socalrwa.org/book-signing/

I’ll also be popping up on different blogs for the next few months, but mainly 2013 is going to be a writing year. I’m almost finished with another novella that I hope to submit to a publisher in April and then I’m going to focus on writing another 1Night Stand for Decadent Publishing.

Pantser or plotter?

A little of both. I start off as a pantser and then turn into a plotter in order to make sense of what I just wrote. Ha!

Tea or coffee?

Neither really. I’m more of a Coke drinker.

Dogs or cats?

Definitely dogs! I have 2 Beagles at home.

Ideal getaway?

Anywhere that I don’t have to cook, clean or do laundry.

If you could meet anyone from history, living or dead, who would it it be and why?

I would love to meet Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. It has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with the fact that I consider her to be one of the most influential and inspiring Latina role models.

Beyond The Page: “Vegas Knights” by Marina Maddix

Mar 13

A businessman, an artist and a bike in Las Vegas… The possibilities are endless 😉

Erotic romance author, Marina Maddix, is about to share her interpretation of this combo in her book VEGAS KNIGHTS.

Read on to find out how about to enter Marina’s THREE giveaways.

One is exclusive to CABR while links are provided to the rafflecopters for a $10 Amazon GC and a Kindle Paperwhite. 😀

Using 120 characters or less (a la Twitter), tell us about “Vegas Knights”.

Big girl Kelly finds the road to love with billionaire biker Rick is full of potholes!

Is there a soundtrack for “Vegas Knights” or did you have one while writing it?

I love music but I can’t listen to it while I’m writing. I could say Elvis was playing in the background but not only would it be cheesy, it wouldn’t be true.

I think Rick would most likely listen to classic rock, since he hangs with a bunch of bikers, but Kelly is softer. I’m sure she wouldn’t mind listening to the classics, but she most likely has a pretty eclectic taste in music.

I could definitely see a wide range of music on her iPod, from Mozart to the White Stripes to Rihanna.

1KnightFallWhat led you to writing this novella?

I started Rick and Kelly’s story in the short erotic romance Knight Fall. Readers wanted more, so I wrote Vegas Knights as a stand-alone novel.

You don’t need to read Knight Fall to enjoy Vegas Knights but it’s a hot story and I recently reduced the price to 99 cents.

What was your favourite/most difficult scene to write? Please include an excerpt from it.

Honestly, the excerpt I included on the Amazon page (see below) was the hardest for me to write. I was deathly ill at the time and just wasn’t feeling the smexy! I actually wrote “SEX HERE” as a place holder. LOL!

I waited till after the book was finished to go back and write that scene because I wasn’t even sure if I even wanted it in there. But it turned out to be one of my favorites in the book because it really shows the advancement of their relationship.

What’s next for you in 2013?

Right now I’m focusing on promoting VEGAS KNIGHTS, including several more blog stops.

Here’s my tour schedule to date:

3/5 Romance Addict (Getting Romantic in Las Vegas)
3/7 Readers Guide to Epublishing (The Whys & Hows of Reviewing Books)
3/8 Belle’s Book Bag (The Benefits of Pole Dancing)

3/25 Books & Tales (Book Spotlight)
3/27 The Book Tart (Guest Post)
3/28 Cocktails & Books (Author Interview)
3/31 Beach Bum Reads (Author Interview)

After all of that, I have several more novels and/or novellas rattling around in my brain.

I know that I’ll be a member of this summer’s Insatiable Reads Book Tour (dates TBD), and if response to VEGAS KNIGHTS is good, I might send Rick and Kelly on a sailing adventure, or I may pursue one of those other ideas. We’ll see!

eBook or paperback?

eBook all the way, baby!

Fruits or chocolate?

Fruits (ripe Georgia peaches or Bing cherries)

4FredDogs or cats?

Cats (close call)

Ideal getaway?

Anywhere with my husband where it’s just the two of us with no phones, no internet and no TV!

If you could meet anyone from history, living or dead, who would it it be and why?

If I’m staying away from the obvious (Hitler so I can kill him or Lincoln so I can save him), I’d say Roald Dahl. I loved his books (Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, James & the Giant Peach) as a kid, and then I read his grown-up fiction. That fellow was seriously twisted and funny – my kind of guy!
