CABR Top Pick, Interview & Giveaway: “The Enforcer (Untamed Hearts #3)” by Kele Moon

Review: Kele Moon practically ripped my heart out (before putting it back together with duct tape) in part one of THE ENFORCER. I have faith that it will heal properly when part two comes out in a few months; Enforcer’s Revenge (Untamed Hearts #4)

If I thought I was invested in all of the main characters from their first appearance in the BATTERED HEARTS series but I was wrong. This book…took me places. It had me crying, laughing and cheering as Valentino “Tino” Moretti and his siblings did what they had to do to not only survive the abuse they each suffered but to find pockets of joy and love which made life worth living.

I strongly advise that once you’ve gotten your copy of THE ENFORCER, clear your schedule. It. Is. That. Riveting! 🙂

Blurb:

To the outside world Lily Ayres is the privileged daughter of an old moneyed family. She is young, beautiful, and a talented horsewoman. All of which are enviably qualities, but few know that beneath this thin veneer of societal perfection lies a deeply troubled young woman.

For Lily rarely speaks and is incapable of normal, human interaction. Unable to understand why she is this way, she further retreats inside herself, until memories and suppressed emotions begin to bubble to the surface.

Murder, revelations of her family’s hidden purpose and dark secrets are revealed as she is thrust into the supernatural world of Krieger Barnes, Vampire King of North America.

***********

EXCERPT:

Merlin turned away from Lily’s body, shaking his head. “The price is too high.”

Merlin was a powerful sorcerer, but he still respected the laws of nature. Krieger knew he was asking Merlin to use dark magic, something the sorcerer had turned his back on years ago.

“I command you.”

Merlin glared at him.

“Do it,” Krieger urged. “For me.”

“So be it.” Angrily, Merlin lifted up his arms. Energy crackled through the room, the fire leapt up, threatening to escape the confines of the brickwork. Tiny particles in the air collided and combined to create a vortex of matter above her. Lily’s body lifted and hovered inches above the sofa. Her long hair floated out and around her face.

Krieger watched as sweat seeped through and drenched Merlin’s clothes. The room felt heavy and weighted down with the stench of ozone. Merlin began to chant, his body swaying with the effort of the spell he was weaving. With an audible pop, Lily fell back onto the sofa.

Merlin looked bewildered. “She’s fighting me, or–” He moved closer to her body. “Her essence is too strong. She’s something I’ve never encountered before. Her body resists my magic.”

“Then force her to accept it!” Krieger knew with each second Lily was drifting further away.

“I cannot.”

Krieger took a step back. “My blood.”

“It is a high price to pay.”

BLURB:

It isn’t safe for men who work in the porn business in the city of Toronto.

When porn producer Sal Turbit is found dead in his apartment, no one seems to care. No one, that is, except Detective Lynette Wilton. Lynette has been a homicide detective for only three months, and has yet to earn her stripes.

Murder is murder no matter who the victim is—and Lynette is out to catch a killer.

Could the killer be Wanda Chambers, a mentally ill woman who hates the “scumbags” who prey on the vulnerable? Wanda’s beloved sister, Cathy, was one such woman. Cathy became a porn actress and then took her own life when her sleazy manager/boyfriend, Gil Lee, wouldn’t let her go.

Lynette’s sergeant doesn’t think it’s possible. Wanda has a debilitating illness. But Lynette believes that Wanda’s hatred and harsh childhood make her a prime suspect, and she proves it by catching Wanda in the act of attempting to shoot Lee.

Renowned defense lawyer Maxine Swayman takes on Wanda’s case; Maxine has a different view of the accused. She wants to help Wanda get the help that she needs, and it’s not going to happen in a prison cell.

As the trial proceeds, will Maxine prevail and save Wanda, or will Lynette be able to tie Wanda to Turbit’s murder as well?

“Morrison knows how to create suspense! She brings readers on a roller-coaster ride that leaves you breathless from start to finish!” —Trey Anthony, star and producer “Da Kink in Da Hair”

Cover_VigilanteEXCERPT from ch 1 of THE VIGILANTE:

“Hey,” Sal said, “come on in. You’re right on time. Good to meet ya.” He left the visitor in the living room of his shabby apartment in a grungy, low-rent building, and slipped into the kitchen. The metallic pop of a beer bottle opening echoed in the other room. Then another.

Six empty beer bottles, a heaping ashtray, and assorted marijuana paraphernalia were already strewn across his table. The grandfather clock struck four times. Sal stumbled back into the room. “I got you a beer.”

Glassy-eyed, Sal said, “I’ve got lots of great products for you to move today.” He showed the visitor the cover of a DVD. “This one is new. It’ll sell out. She’s a real sweet thing. Told me she was eighteen ’n had the ID to prove it. Likely just some little tramp from nowhere-ville. Came to the big, bad city for excitement––”

The metal felt cool as the visitor pulled out a gun.

“What the hell?” Sal screamed, just before the bullet penetrated his skull.

He fell onto the sofa, blood oozing out the back of his head. His face was contorted, almost angry looking. Certainly surprised.

The spent cartridge from the handgun ricocheted against a metal garbage can––reminiscent of the pop of a beer cap––and then landed on the carpet.

The murderer studied the victim’s splayed body, feeling a sense of elation and satisfaction. Out came a Swiss Army knife, and the killer wordlessly hacked off a section of Sal’s hair, stuffed it into a small plastic bag, and then threw it into a knapsack. The killer then picked up the half-spilled beer that Sal had been handing over when the shot was fired. Perfect. Grinning, the murderer chugged the beer, retrieved the spent cartridge, and smugly looked at Sal Turbit’s still body, now surrounded by pooling blood.

Still wearing leather gloves, the murderer put the beer bottle and hot metal bullet charge into a knapsack and fled, smiling, into the dense night.

AuthorPic-1ABOUT the author:

Hi, I’m Jacqui Morrison. I started writing poems and short stories as a child. I also enjoyed public speaking in elementary school and at University. In High School, a great teacher, Lenore Hawley, inspired me and in 1995 I pursued my life-long passion for writing.

My career is a complicated web and includes: owning an ice cream parlour and fine food shop, teaching life-skills management to adults, teaching computer applications, social service work and marketing.

From 1994 to 2003, I assisted survivors of domestic violence in both criminal and family court as a support worker. I’ve always had a strong interest in law and justice.

I love to write and I am happiest writing or encouraging others to fulfill their writing dreams. I facilitate writing seminars for Canadore College and various agencies.

I live in northern Ontario, Canada with my daughter Alison, my husband Wayne, and a three-legged dog named Willow. Our daughter has convinced us to adopt four cats so Felix, Sasha, Nikke and Angel round out our family. Angel, at four-months-of-age was abandoned by its owner and we rescued her in -15 degree weather.

Alison has a future in politics, animal rescue work or sales … because I’m not really a cat person and she’s persuaded me to adopt four.

My parents are the late Drs John and Irene Morrison. Mom was a family physician and a competitive swimmer. My father worked for the Provincial Parole Board. Dad enjoyed to write fictional stories in his spare time. He was my mentor, my editor and my hero. I have one sister named Trish. She is a competitive swimming coach. Trish resides in southern Ontario with her husband, four children, two dogs and a cat.

In our spare time we like to cruise Georgian Bay on our boat or spend quality family time.

MIDNIGHT SPECIAL

by Tawny Weber

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Somewhere on the train is a key witness for a crime involving arson, murder and a high-profile businessman. And reporter Marni Clare will do whatever it takes to get the story—even if it means crashing in a sleeper car that’s she’s not sure she’s reserved. But when she wakes, she finds herself curled up with the man she’s seeking…and he’s hot enough to derail all her plans!
FBI special agent Hunter won’t complain about the wickedly hot blonde in his arms. And maybe it’s the medication he’s on, but he’s even agreed to share his room for the entire journey….
It’s a long trip in close quarters, and within days their berth becomes the scene of some steamy railway romps. But is Marni just having fun…or is she taking Hunter for a ride?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

MARNI SHOULD BE OUTRAGED. Shocked, even.

But she was too busy visually gobbling up the delicious view.

Oh, sweet baby. What a body.

“I didn’t sneak into your bed,” she finally responded, her tone more absent and offhand than angry and dismissive.

“No? My bed.” He pointed to the bunk, then shifted his finger to her. “You. Since I didn’t invite you in, I’d say sneaked in is a good term.”

That cut right through Marni’s foggy passion. Irritation chased back desire. Not away. There was no chance of not feeling desire when a guy as gorgeous as this one stood naked in front of her. But her brain was starting to override her body. Or, at least, trying to.

“Let’s think about this,” she said, sitting up straighter and offering a chilly smile. “When I arrived in this cabin last night, mine was the only luggage here. There was no sign of anyone else using the room. When I climbed into bed, it was empty. You weren’t here. I’d say that makes you the one sneaking around, don’t you think?”

His laugh was as appreciative as it was sardonic.

Then he turned his back toward her. She couldn’t quiet her approving moan at the site of his perfect—not just great, but perfect—butt. Her gaze slowly meandered up the golden planes of his back, and since he wasn’t looking, she wiped her lower lip to make sure there was no evidence of drool.

Then her eyes landed on his shoulders.

His shoulders!

Her drool dried up, the lust in her belly replaced with a different kind of excitement.

It was him.

Those were the shoulders.

She’d had a little early morning delight with the very man she’d told her cousin she was chasing down for a hot, sexy time.

Funny how those things worked out.

Beyond The Page & Giveaway: “Beyond The Sun” by Sandra Bischoff

Apr 5

Paranormal romance fans, I’d like to introduce you to debut author, Sandra Bischoff   🙂

Read on to find out how you could WIN her book, BEYOND THE SUN, from Bayou Brew Publishing.
beyond-the-sun cover

Sandra, tell us about your debut novel, BEYOND THE SUN, in 120 characters or less.

BEYOND THE SUN is a Paranormal Romance loosely based on Camelot full of murder, mayhem and of course romance.

I understand BTS evolved from a short story you posted on a social networking site. How did you make the leap from there to published novelist?

It did not happen overnight. This book took me over a year to write the first time. I think I revised it over a dozen times until it was finally picked up by Bayou Brew Publishing. The whole process lasted about seven years.

Kudos to you on sticking with it Sandra  🙂

Sandra Bischoff pic

Did you struggle to write a particular scene? Why?

I can’t remember any one scene being a struggle. Scenes that involved fighting or hand to hand combat usually take me longer to write only because I have to actually go through the motions to see or feel how it would play out.

Here’s an example:

The creak of leather allowed him to pinpoint the location of his intruder. Jared slowly wrapped his fingers around the wooden staff resting on the floor before him and waited.

Come to Papa, asshole.

The air in the room stirred. Jared smirked as a leather duster slid into view on the floor in front of him. His attacker was trying to throw him off. Did they honestly think he would fall for such a lame trick…again? He took nothing for what it seemed when dealing with vampires. No, Jared relied on his honed senses to keep his head on his shoulders when faced with a fight.

A breeze brushed over his arms. He brought his weapon up on his left side, blocking his attacker’s strike. The wooden staffs cracked together. Jared swung around, keeping their weapons locked together until he fell into a ready stance.

The vampire backed up a step and twirled the staff at his side. He circled around slowly, just out of striking distance. Jared kept a wary eye trained on the male; the pointed end of his staff aimed at his assailant’s chest.

Before he could blink, the vamp advanced and drove him back. Jared met each advancing blow with a block. He sensed the wall at his back and launched to the side, rolling away before he was cornered. He made a full sweep of the floor with his staff, catching his opponent’s foot and knocking him onto the ground. Taking advantage of the momentary lapse, Jared grabbed the other man’s weapon, breaking his hold and pinning him to the floor.

“Yield.” Jared towered over the vampire and leaned into the staff on his attacker’s neck.

His assailant let out a raspy laugh. He grabbed Jared’s leg and pulled it out from under him. He landed on his ass. The staff clattered to the ground. The vamp spun away from him, but not before giving Jared a knock on the back of the head with his staff. Snarling, Jared retrieved his weapon and prepared for the next attack.

If you were offered a TV or movie deal, which would you choose? Who would play your characters?

I would definitely go with a movie deal. Since I’ve only done one book so far, I don’t see a TV series coming from this particular book on its own.

Casting for me is a piece of cake, Mike Vogel is my Jared, always has been, Alexandra would be Jaime Murray, Zephyr is Oliver Martinez, Abs definitely is Agnes Brukner, Semiramis is Juliana Margulies, and last but not least, Lance Du Lace would be cast as Jensen Ackles.

I’m liking those choices 🙂

If you could meet anyone from history, living or dead, who would it be and why?

Author John Jakes. I have so many questions that revolve around his North and South book series. I’d love to know the reasoning behind why he ended it the way he did. It’s my favorite historical series ever.

beyond-the-sun coverSynopsis: Fifteen years ago Jared Bonatelli had it all. The youngest son of one of the founding families in the Conservatorship of The Dark Order he lived a life you only thought existed in novels and nightmares. He had just graduated from Oxford University and became engaged to his childhood sweetheart when he lost it all in one violent act.

The very next day he found himself shipped off to New Orleans with only the money in his pocket and whatever he could fit in one suitcase. Since that night he has suffered reliving his fiancé’s murder repeatedly in his dreams. It isn’t until he finds himself summoned back to New York for an emergency meeting of the Conservatorship that the comfortable world he lives in begins to crumble around him.

Alexandra Toscano has been searching for the one assignment that could catapult her journalistic career. When her editor Gene O’Hanlon drops a manila folder in her lap, Alex is immediately skeptical. At first glance the information he hands her seems like a publicity piece that is till she comes across an article he wrote some fifteen years ago about Vampires murdering a young woman in Central Park.

She is ready to laugh it off as a work of fiction until he points out he was an eye witness to the whole thing. But that wasn’t all. The girl’s boyfriend was a member of a prominent Italian family who vanished the very next day.

Now as Alex begins to dig deeper into Jared’s life she begins to question her own past. Could the answer she seeks be found in the glowing eyes of the one person she is sworn to expose? Or will they both find themselves torn apart by a world Beyond the Sun?
