(CABR Top Pick) Review: “The Divorce Party” by Jennifer Hayward

Top Pick large image.

TDP cover 2

Review: Wow. Debut author JENNIFER HAYWARD proves why her submission was chosen as the winner of Harlequin’s 2012 So You Think You Can Write (SYTYCW) competition 🙂

Once I started reading THE DIVORCE PARTY, I simply could not put it down. Literally. I read this book in one day and was dying to read another by Ms Hayward.

Thank God she’s planning to write sequels about relatives of the hero and heroine 🙂

Ok. What has me so excited you ask? Everything.

**spoilers**

There’s the journey of two soul mates who weren’t brave enough the first time around to share all of their secrets.

The heroine, Lilly Anderson, has an eating disorder. She has reached a good place in life, where she knows what to do to avoid succumbing to this potentially fatal habit, but it can be a difficult road to travel at times.

Ricardo De Campo, meanwhile, is a former race car driver who walked away from a winning season, one where he was poised to take home the championship, to take over as CEO of his family’s business empire.

Ms Hayward brings Lilly and Ricardo to life through her deft touch with dialogue and description. You get insight into Lilly’s thoughts and motivations in one scene, then you’re given a glimpse into how Ricardo is handling things in another.

I love dual points of view. You get a much richer experience of a couple’s journey toward HEA.  🙂

Did I mention the sexual chemistry between these two? Smoking!

Ricardo is drool-worthy and his wife is hot too. While they share some passionate kisses early on, a level of trust and complete honesty on both their parts is required before they consummate their relationship. But boy oh boy, was it worth the wait 😉

Looking for a great book that won’t take you forever to finish? Or perhaps that perfect gift for the Harlequin/Mills & Boon fan in your family?

Then THE DIVORCE PARTY is it.   😀

Guest Post & Giveaway: “Archer” by Debra Kayn

Debra Kayn:

Thanks so much for having me on your blog, Sasha! You know how much I love coming here, and talking with your readers. 😀

While I was trying to come up with something brilliant to write about, I thought about sexy alpha men who drive and work on classic cars, and are also private investigators…nah, too predictable.

Then I thought I could talk about how to keep the suspense while writing a hot book, but that would’ve been too long and complicated. So, I threw all my ideas away, and decided to go with the following post.

FOREARMS AND HANDS

Do you notice a man’s forearms and hands? Don’t you find that part of a man’s body fascinating?

They don’t even compare to a woman’s arms and hands. They’re bigger, stronger, thicker, and oh my delicious, they are sexy!

Of course, Kage Archer, my hero in Archer, works with his hands and around tools every day. His forearms are thick and strong from daily work. When he holds Janie’s hand, she feels safe and protected.

Most of all, for how alpha Kage is and the depth he’ll go to keep Janie safe, when he touches her, she’s reminded of how much he loves her. And when you look down at his fingers entwined with hers, and see that roughened hand, stained black from grease, cradling her with a soft touch…that’s sexy.

How about you? Do you notice a man’s forearms and hands?

She’s on the run . . .

Jane Beaumont currently has in her possession: a cat, a hundred grand in cash, and a pistol.

She’s on her way home to Bay City, Oregon—and away from the nightmare of her violent exboyfriend.

She’ll lay low at Beaumont Body Shop, a car detailer that runs a private investigation agency in the back. The only wrench in her plan is Kage Archer: sexy, strong, and intent on

protecting Jane at all costs. She’s wanted Kage forever, but putting him in harm’s way is a risk she’s not willing to take.

He’s not going anywhere

Kage is no stranger to the dark side of life; his family runs the underground drug scene.

Yet Kage has always walked on the right side of the law. Jane expressed her interest in him years ago, but he pushed her away for her own good.

Now, after learning all she’s endured, Kage can’t leave her side—or hide his need for her. When a frightening situation turns dire, can Kage convince Jane that the safest place to be is in his arms?

EXCERPT:

Her gaze lifted. His jaw ticked. She’d done everything wrong from day one. Going to college meant spreading her wings, and she not only flew, she’d gotten far away from who she was and then latched on to the first person who made her feel good about herself.

Kage tensed, letting his protectiveness show. She laid her hands on top of his. “There was nothing you could’ve done.”

“I could’ve saved you,” he muttered.

She smiled sadly. He had no idea how much she wanted to go back and do the right thing, to call him or Garrett the first time she suspected Scott was not a real estate broker but doing something illegal, but it was too late. “Let’s not talk about it anymore.”

“Okay. I’ll leave it alone for now.” Kage paused as the waitress brought two beers and set them on the counter. He watched her leave, then said, “From now on, you’re with me twentyfour/seven.”

“What?” She shook her head. “That’s not necessary. I’m staying at the house, and—”

“I’m not going to argue with you. It’s done.” He picked up his mug. “Garrett’s agreed.”

“Oh, no, you are not staying with me.” She tried to extract herself from between his legs, but he refused to let her go. “I can’t be around you.”

What he was telling her was impossible. Garrett could watch out for her. She worked at night. She’d stayed safe for the past three weeks. Scott hadn’t called or found her. If Kage stayed with them at the house, she’d do something stupid.

“Really, Kage. You need to stay far, far away from me. For your own safety.” She squeezed his hand. “Please.”

His eyes went soft and he flashed a grin. Her stomach fluttered. She couldn’t even sit beside him without melting.

“I’m serious.” She raked her teeth over her bottom lip.

He kept looking at her in amusement, his smile growing bigger. “Me too.”

Damn him. He wasn’t taking her seriously. She was only entertaining him. “You’ll see. I’ll destroy everything.”

“Baby, get this. I’m not telling you no this time. You got it?” he said.

Heat rushed to her cheeks as she remembered the last time he’d denied her. His gaze softened and she swallowed, overcome with the power and acceptance radiating off him. Her sex pulsed and dampened at what he was implying would happen between them if she let it.

“It’ll never happen.”

His gaze intensified. “It’ll happen.”

“I won’t let it.”

He hovered within an inch of her mouth. “It’s already happened. Now you know. Deal with it.”

Review: “Archer” by Debra Kayn

Review: Debra Kayn has written a magnificent story about survival and finding love when you thought the chance had passed you by. ARCHER is a

wonderful introduction to the men of Beaumont Body Shop whose stories are featured in the A Hard Body Novel series. 🙂

Jane, or Janie to her loved ones, is in a very abusive relationship at the start of the book. There’s a violent encounter with her drug-dealing boyfriend which sets up the rest of the storyline, as Jane decides it’s now or never if she’s to be free of Scott once and for all.

Fast-forward three months and Jane is back in her hometown, helping out at the body shop at night because she’s afraid Scott might show up in the day and see her there.

Enter our fantastic hero, Kage Archer. He’s loved Janie for years but didn’t feel he was good enough for her in the past. Since then, she’s been in a relationship but Kane was simply biding his time, so when “the one” returns to town, he’s not about to let her slip away again.

Knowing she’s hiding something big, and having been told by his best friend and her older brother Garrett that Janie was abused by her ex, Kage sets about trying to free the woman he knows is buried beneath the shell of a personality left behind after four years of pain and suffering.

Janie may have pushed away her friends and family out of fear and shame but they’re ready and willing to help her fight for her freedom and regain her sense of self. I love the strong, funny supporting characters of Jane’s best friend, Sabrina Wilcox, and the mother figure in her life, owner of the local bar Corner Pocket, Charlene.

I’m really looking forward to Sabrina’s story in the A Hard Body Novel series. 😉

No spoilers here. Suffice it to know there’s some hot loving between Kage and Janie, after a period of adjustment on both their parts to her past and their own history. Boy, was it worth it! 🙂

Kage has a dark past of his own, with family members involved in illegal activities which have an unexpected connection to his life today. What Kane does to ensure Janie’s safety demonstrates what a selfless guy he is, who will always put the ones he loves first. ‘

Thankfully, Kage is able to get away from those who would want to draw him into a life of crime but he’ll always have to be alert.

My verdict – go buy a copy of ARCHER from your favourite retailer. You won’t regret it.
