Seducing Phoebe

Review: I loved this book! 🙂 There was angst and the return of an ex-boyfriend on the eve of the heroine’s wedding to a man whose ‘been there’ for her all along.

Phoebe and Marco each have their own secrets and insecurities which affect their ability to truly open up to one another and most importantly, to open up to love.

Beyond The Page & $40 Amazon GC Giveaway: “When Honey Got Married…” anthology. Interview with Anna Cleary

May 6

Anna Cleary has stopped by CABR to tell us about her novella EVE MET HER MATCH, part of the WHEN HONEY GOT MARRIED anthology from Entangled publishing

Hello, Sasha and lovely readers. It’s wonderful to be here!

It’s my pleasure to have you stop by Anna 🙂

What is the name of your novella in the anthology, WHEN HONEY GOT MARRIED…?

Mine is the story entitled “Eve Met her Match

My heroine, Eve is an old school friend of the bride, Honey, and once worked for Honey’s groom, Brent, as his assistant. Unfortunately, Eve fell in love with Brent, and was heartbroken when he announced his engagement to Honey. On the night of the wedding rehearsal dinner, Eve – who is something of an actress, and has even been described by some in Bellefleur as a “beautiful minx” – still has hopes of changing the situation and winning Brent for herself. After all, a marriage is not a marriage until the “I Do’s” have all been said, signed and sealed!

Naturally, Eve sashays into the party looking as sexy as sin in her crimson satin. Unfortunately, almost at once she encounters Brent’s devilishly handsome and sophisticated cousin, Rainer. He’s an experienced professional troubleshooter. He believes he recognises Trouble when she slinks through the door in the form of Eve, and thinks he knows exactly how to deal with the minx!
You had better read the story to find out what Rainer does!

Did you brainstorm the overall book with Kimberly Lang, Kelly Hunter and Ally Blake?

I did indeed brainstorm with my gorgeous, talented friends. The moment we decided on setting our wedding in Louisiana, there was this amazing explosion of ideas. They came so thick and fast we could hardly write them down fast enough to share with each other. Some of them were hilarious, and caused a certain amount of concern in our cultural guide, Miss Kimberly, who is the only bona fide Southern belle of the bunch. She had to rein us in quite a few times, saying ever so gently and politely, “That isn’t how we do things here!”
We had so many laughs. The four of us really clicked. We had so much fun, I think it shows in the stories.

Besides Kimberly, who was certainly our most invaluable source, the US has a magnificent body of literature, music, theatre and film portraying the stories of the South, making that rich and varied culture accessible even to three little Aussies on the other side of the world. So we had much to draw upon to assist our imaginations. Every Tennessee Williams play, movies like Steel Magnolias, Gone With the Wind, Sweet Home Alabama, Elmore Leonard’s marvellous books… True Blood…Justified…The list goes on!

How cool is that? 🙂

Did you struggle to put down words when it came to a particular scene in the book?

Anna Cleary picYou know, I don’t believe I did. Once I’d dreamed up my characters, Eve’s story just flowed from my fingers. I think the constant input and discussions with the other authors about the background settings, other characters in the town etc, kept our inspiration popping. Rainer, in fact, was so vivid to me I can still hear his voice and see his gray eyes glinting with amusement.

Excerpt from EVE MET HER MATCH:

He said softly, “So what went wrong?”

Her nerve jumped. “With what?”

“The kiss.”

“Nothing. I told you. We had to get up early and…”

“Did you give it all you’ve got?”

Unusually for her, she was rocked by a surge of anger. She hissed in a breath. “It was a perfectly normal kiss. It may surprise you to know this about someone in your family, Rainer Delacroix, but your cousin Brent is a nice guy.”

His brows shot up while his eyes danced with pure infuriating amusement. Then he shook his head solemnly. “Eve. How nice is a guy who kisses a woman and leaves her hanging?”

Did you find inspiration from particular songs/albums while writing?

Absolutely. There’s hardly a bathroom in the world that hasn’t rung to the plaintive strains of that beautiful lament, “Blue Bayou” at one time or another. As well, I’ve always been a jazz lover, I loooove the New Orleans heritage. Even some of my old Ellington favourites sprang to mind when Eve swished into my head and my heart.

Any future anthologies planned with Kimberly, Kelly and Ally?

Not at this point. We all have projects we’re involved in, but we had such a great time creating Bellefleur and its society, we’ve all declared we would just ADORE to sashay down that road again any old time! We’ll just have to see!

Favourite snack?

Toasted avocado and tomato sandwich–but you must lightly toast the bread first, then slather the avocado on both slices as thick as butter before you add the sliced tomato with salt and pepper. Delish! (I’m carefully not suggesting the addition of several generous slabs of Camembert, because that could become dangerously addictive. 🙂

Ideal getaway?

I live in a resort rich country, but my favourite would have to be Noosa on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. I think it’s the smell of the place–salty sea mixed with rainforest and the pervasive, aromatic scent of tea-tree. Of course I enjoy travelling further afield as well, though that doesn’t happen often enough!

If you could be someone from history for a day, living or dead, who would it be and why?

Oh, this is hard. Let’s see…

How about Queen Elizabeth I of England? I would step into her bejewelled royal shoes just for one day for the express purpose of halting the execution of her cousin, Mary of Scotland. I believe that was a tragic and terrible choice Liz was persuaded, pressured or tricked into making!

Thank you so much for having me here at Caribbean Accent Book Reviews, Sasha!  And I sincerely hope your readers enjoy Honey’s world as much as we enjoyed creating it!

Guest Post & Giveaway: “By Hook or By Crook” by Linda Morris

May 1

Linda Morris is in charge today, so pay close attention to what she’s written.

If you correctly answer the giveaway question, you could win an eBook copy of BY HOOK OR BY CROOK 🙂

Thanks for having me at Caribbean Accent Book Reviews today to share a little about my latest book how came to be published.

BY HOOK OR BY CROOK is a little bit different from a lot of romance I’ve read lately. While pitching it to an editor during a pitch session on Twitter, I made the mistake of calling it a romantic caper, to which the editor responded “nobody reads those anymore.” Then numerous other editors kindly jumped in to agree with her.

Luckily I eventually found an editor who felt differently and fell in love with the story. (So there’s my pro tip for this interview: If you’re describing your book to an agent or editor, don’t call it a caper. Even if it is one. Especially if it is one.)

But I love romantic crime capers. One of my favorite movies is Out of Sight, based on the Elmore Leonard novel of the same name. Jennifer Lopez and George Clooney light up the screen as the ultimate odd couple: a federal marshal and a bank robber fall in love, all set against the backdrop of a prison escape and jewelry heist.

BY HOOK OR BY CROOK is a little different. Ivy Smithson is a prissy heiress who never crosses her wealthy business father. She leaves that to her rebellious little sister, Daisy. At the beginning of the story, Daisy calls Ivy to announce that she’s eloping to Vegas to marry the MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fighter she’s been dating only a few months.

Ivy thinks it’s a disaster: She’s been used for her money and doesn’t want the same thing to happen to her little sister. She confides in their overbearing father, who comes up with an idea. He’ll send Joe Dunham, his oh-so-sexy security consultant, to Vegas with Ivy to stop the wedding before it can happen. Joe thinks Ivy is nuts. Who is she to stop her little sister form marrying the man he loves? But he never argues with a paying client (well, not much anyway), so he goes along. But something goes amiss.

When they arrive in Vegas, Daisy’s fiancee has abruptly dropped out of the big MMA bout he was to fight in. He and Daisy are nowhere to be found. Joe and Ivy know they never would have let this opportunity for his MMA career get away, so something must be wrong. They set off to find them.

I won’t giveaway too much, but let’s say that gangsters, a sketch by the German artist Albrecht Durer, and Lake Tahoe all come into play. Ivy wants to stop her sister from ending up with the wrong man, but when Joe and Ivy are forced to spend time together, she finds herself falling for an inappropriate man of her very own!

BLURB: Heiress Ivy Smithson is determined to keep her flaky sister from making the worst mistake of her life: marrying the wrong man. Clearly, the guy is just after the family’s money.

To stop her, Ivy teams up with her father’s gorgeous, wisecracking, and supremely difficult security consultant, ex-cop Joe Dunham. Ivy’s way too uptight to be his style, but she’s had his attention from the first — maybe because Joe always pays attention where women are concerned.

Bickering all the way, off they go on a mission to Vegas to track down Ivy’s sister and stop the wedding.

When Ivy and Joe anger the wrong people, their lives get dangerous, but guns and gangsters aren’t the only threat they face. Ivy knows Joe isn’t her type, so why does falling for the wrong guy feel very, very right?

Beyond The Page: “I Do…or Die” by Donna Cummings

(Click the red text for BUY links/info)

CABR: Welcome to my blog Donna. I’m looking forward to learning more about your book and your quiz answers of course 😀

DC: Thanks. I’m excited to be on your blog. 🙂

CABR: Which scenes in “I Do…I Die” were the most fun and most difficult to write?

DC: I love dialogue, so the scenes with Shelby and Ryan bantering, which they did constantly, were my favorite ones to write. I also had a lot of fun writing Shelby’s scenes with the bad guy – she had some creative ways of dealing with the situation!

As for the most difficult. . . sometimes I write at the library, or coffee shop, just to keep the muse amused. I wrote Shelby and Ryan’s first love scene while at the library, so I kept looking over my shoulder to make sure nobody was reading it. I must have looked very suspicious to the librarians!

CABR: I can just imagine you in the library now 🙂 What inspired you to write about a commitment-phobe bridesmaid hooking up with a detective?

Donna Cummings picDC: This story kind of took me by surprise! I started out writing down the complaints a fictional bridesmaid had about the horrible dresses she’d worn, and then all of a sudden there was a shooting at the wedding, and when the detective showed up, they were bantering as if they’d known each other forever. . . It was a fun story to write because I never knew exactly where things were headed.

CABR: Coffee or tea?

DC: Coffee, coffee, coffee, and MORE coffee. LOL I tweet about it a lot too. #nosurprisethere

CABR: Paperbacks or eBooks?

DC: I was a diehard paperback girl until I got my Nook last year. I haven’t read anything but ebooks since — and nobody is more surprised by that than me!

CABR: I love my Kindle app on the iPad. I have so many books on there but paperbacks still have a special place in my heart. 🙂 Spa day or walk through the woods to relax?

DC: Walking thru the woods isn’t relaxing for me – I’d be worried about bears and bugs and poison ivy. I’d rather be at a spa, LOOKING at the woods outside the window. Actually, I’d rather be looking at that beautiful beach scene you have over there. Sigh. In my mind, that’s where I’m at. 🙂 In real life? Not so much.

I Do or Die picCABR: St Maarten IS gorgeous isn’t it? 😀 Chocolate or fruits?

DC: Chocolate. Definitely chocolate. You can even put it in my coffee sometimes!

CABR: My kinda person. Chocolate rules! “Panster” or planner when writing?

DC: I’m a “pantser”. I tried to be a plotter, but it kept me from writing. So I just let the characters take me where they want to go. If we get lost, we manage to find our way back. Most of the time!

CABR: If you could be someone else for a day, from any time in history, who would you be and why?

DC: I think you’ve stumped me on this one! I don’t know that I’d ever want to BE anyone else. I’d sure like to hang out with other people in history though. I’d love to have Jane Austen as a wingman in Regency England. Wouldn’t that be fun?

CABR: It sure would! Mr Darcy… 🙂

Once you’ve read WATGW, you only have a few days to wait until the October 1 release of “The Saint’s Devilish Deal“. Alright folks, on to the BTP interview with Kristina…..

CABR: Welcome to my blog Kristina and thanks for taking the time to answer my Beyond The Page questions 🙂

KK: Hey, Sasha! Thanks so much for having me over to your web-home today, I’m very excited to be here!

CABR: Happy you’re as excited as I am. 🙂 “What a Texas Girl Wants” begins on a beach in Mexico, with hungover newlyweds.

Where’d the idea come from and did you find yourself having a lot more fun seeing where the characters led you in this book than your other books?

KK: Who wouldn’t want to wake up, naked with a hot guy? Yeah, I see the smiles! The idea for this story actually came to me like a movie reel – I saw the sun rising over the cliffs, the sparkling water and these two entwined bodies. I knew they were waking up, I knew they didn’t have a clue how they’d gotten there but the characters just wouldn’t let me go.

So I made notes (I was in the middle of writing another book at the time) and kept working. One afternoon I heard the Toby Keith song ‘Stays in Mexico’ for probably the millionth time and I just knew – they were in Mexico, they were married, they didn’t want to be, but they needed to stay that way. Kathleen and Jackson took it from there!

CABR: Ahh. Now we know 🙂

When did you sign your book deal with Crimson Romance and how has your life changed since then?

KK: I signed with Crimson in February 2012 and it’s been a crazy ride ever since. With Crimson being an e-first publisher, books come to market a LOT sooner than paper books. The biggest change has been my schedule – being an aspiring author is a lot different than being a published author.

Then, I could focus on my writing, play around on social media, chat with friends…it was all on my schedule. Now I have books coming out and promotional plans and deadlines to meet – and I still have only 24 hours in the day, a family, a home, friends…I wouldn’t change anything, though. Okay, maybe I’d totally take on a clone for the housework.

CABR: I hear you on the housework clone. 🙂 Does music play a part in all of your books or was it more for “The Saint’s Devilish Deal“?

KK: Music plays a part in all my books. I need music when I’m writing to drown out the silence – usually it’s light jazz or classical, lyrics are not helpful at that stage. When I begin the editing phase music helps me keep the feel of the book – at that point it’s a playlist of songs I think ‘speak’ to the characters or a storyline or something.

CABR: Very cool. Sometimes I hear a song and it reminds me of the h/h from a book I’ve recently read. WATGW and TSDD are both partially set in Mexico. Was there a special reason for this?

KK: Frijoles, empanadas, quesadillas, churros…Oh, you mean other than food? I love Mexico, always have. It’s a beautiful country filled with warm, inviting people and some amazing scenery. Did I mention the food yet? The food is killah! I know there are some real-world issues and dangers in the country, but I also think there is a lot to love about it and I wanted to highlight those good parts!

CABR: LOL I bet we’d be good FoodNetwork friends. Do you get to choose or help design your book covers? How big a role do you think the look of a book has in portraying the story to a potential reader?

KK: I don’t get to choose, but I’ve been really, really lucky with both my covers. I love them! My publisher uses an art sheet – so I do have a little input. I’ll describe the characters, setting and give them my opinions about what might be cool to include…but my input ends there. I think, especially in e-land, that covers play a huge part.

The cover needs to interest the reader enough to click through and read the book blurb. I think it helps if the cover echoes the feel of the book, and luckily for me, I think my covers do that.

CABR: Great point about eBook covers being key to attracting potential readers. What’s next for you? Edits? Series? Re-writes?

KK: Yes, yes and yes! I just turned in the second “Texas Girl” book – yes, Kathleen’s sisters are getting their own stories! So I’m waiting on those edits and I’m working on the third Texas book, too.

And because I’m a crazy writer chick, I went to a writers retreat this weekend and came home with about four more story ideas itching to be told…I’m going to be busy for a while. Anyone know a cook who will work for cheap? I may need one of those soon…

CABR: I’m like that with new books, even though my TBR pile is a nice tower. 🙂 What’s the funniest fan interaction you’ve had?

KK: RadioMan (my husband) convinced me I needed to do something memorable for my book sales, so I’ve been creating a charm bracelet – each bead or charm represents a book sold. I was at the jewelry store picking out my latest charm a few weeks ago and the sale person was asking me about my bracelet and that led to chatting about my books – at which point she said, ‘You wrote Kathleen’s story? I loved her!’ and she dropped the charm, it rolled under the counter and we were both on our hands and knees trying to get it out for the next few minutes!

CABR: That’s cute and funny 😀 Were you awestruck upon meeting any particular author/s at a convention? Were you able to ‘keep it together’?

KK: I was at the RWA National Convention a couple of years ago and hopped onto the elevator early in the morning to see Suzanne Enoch (one of my favorite authors, like, ever) standing in the corner. I froze half-way into the elevator, my pointer finger raised and had a kind of loud gaspy thing happen. “You’re Suzanne Enoch!” I said (maybe yelled. Possibly squealed). “Good morning,” she said. And I proceed to tell her of my love for Samantha Jellicoe (her cat burglar character) and how sad I was that The End was coming. She was so nice and down to earth and I’m still a total fan-girl of hers. I don’t know that I kept it together but at least I didn’t drool on her!

CABR: LOL. Love your honesty Kristina. If you could be someone else for a day, from any time in history, who would you be and why?

KK: Oh, gosh, the possibilities! I think I’d like to spend a day as an Egyptian princess – you know, when they were building the pyramids. I’ve always been fascinated by that time period. And being a dance-hall girl in the American West could be fun, too. But one day would definitely be my limit – I like my modern conveniences a little too much to stay much longer!

CABR: Yup, one day is enough for it all to be a novelty. Which character from fiction, yours or another author’s, would you like to spend time with and why?

KK: Samantha Jellicoe, one of Suzanne Enoch’s characters. I love Samantha – she’s funny, loyal and I’ve always wanted to know how to pick pockets. Please don’t report me to the police.

CABR: LOL. Thanks again Kristina for stopping by Caribbean Accent Book Reviews Kristina.

KK: Thanks for having me!!
